Hat’s Amazing
HAT’S AMAZING!
Some people make no attempt to hide their grays (or white streaks) under hats. This shot, taken of Daphne Guinness from the just-released book, 15X15, due out mid-November, and offered for 30 days only at 15X15project.com, proves beyond a doubt that hats add charm and panache.
But hats are perfect to hide the streaks you don’t want others to see. Especially during transitioning. Rather than just pull on any old thing, the trick is to wear a hat with dash. Tilt it. Angle it. If you’ve got some nice whites going on at the sides, leg them dangle down. If you’re still in 2-inches-of-roots territory, let the hat tell the story while letting what used to pass for your “natural” color show beneath.
Now that we’re heading towards winter’s wrath (or summer’s sun, when you hair needs protection from the UV rays), it’s time to get those hats on! So as you get yours out of the closet, take a pic and send it in. We’d like to see hats, headbands, any trick in the book that gets you through transitioning.
Here’s how some of our Members handle hats – with attitude, with style, and most of all, with a fun little twinkle in their eyes.
Marisa D.
Marisa’s a hat gal, no doubt about it. Especially after a kind stranger stopped her in the hat department, tilted one on her head, and told her to wear it with a little snap. That did it, and Marisa wore hats all through transition. And beyond. She’s still wearing hats to this day, and still getting loads of compliments!
Goldie Ingersoll
Goldie may have started out hiding everything (who is that mad-hatted woman?), but now she loves to play with hats and staged a whole shoot around them! Don't you love the parasol and hatboxes?
Chrissy and Ruth
Chrissy and Ravenjourney are definitely in the Beret camp. So many interesting yarns, so many marled or shiny effects. There’s bound to be a beret that is just right for you! And the bonus is, you can let your newly white bangs stick out, or do a smooth-sided “do” just peeking out.
Ruth keeps busy making her own berets, too. Blue to show off her silvers, brown to hide them!
Diana/OZ
Diana grabs the camouflage when it comes to hat choices. Berets, Earmuffs, Hoods. Makes no difference, as long as there’s some gray goin’ on!
Dede Runnels
And Dede, our Motorcycle Mama, says this is the only hat she ever wears! Love the Bones ‘N Roses!
Start Here to Hat Shop
Never hurts to try. All of the hats below are from Betmar, a reasonably priced line. Let them add a little dash of mystique to your transitioning locks.
Newsboy, Fisherman and Engineer Caps
One step up from traditional baseball caps. They keep their brim, but add a dash of flash in fabric variations. Tilt one on, and go!
Berets
The all purpose cover-up, newest in pretty pastels (with flower appliqués), texture, and exotic looks.
Cloches
There’s something very flapper about a cloche. Wear it pulled down low, with just a little flip of a curl peeking out beneath.
Beachy Breezy Hats
Whether a dressed-up straw, or something more casual for the beach, these lightweight summer hats are flattering and fun.
Structured Winter Hats
Now’s the time to go for it! Structured hats always add an air of sophistication, a touch of 40’s glam, and perfect camouflage until you’re ready to let your silvers shine in the spring sun!
