The Way We Were

Somewhere in the past of every Silver Sister, there’s a color we chose to become. Just like we’re choosing to go natural now. Or there’s a hairstyle we simply had to have. We flipped over flips, fought to get the Farrah, adored the Dorothy Hamill wedge. Or maybe it was the shag, the bubble, the Rachel that sent us out the door confident in our own gorgeousness. There’s a message here. Just as we worked at it, really worked, to perfect the color and styles of our youth, we can do the same thing now that we’re embracing our gray. Hey, it’s our party and we’ll smile if we want to!

If you want to send in any shots of the way you were, feel free! It’s fun to look back. It’s even more fun to look forward.

Now, with apologies to Barbra Streisand, let’s take a look at some misty watercolor memories. . . of the way we were. . .

Aziza

Here she is at 19. We’d recognize her anywhere. It’s the cute little smile. And now we see, she really did have curls à la Charlies Angels!

Cathy M./ “cathy”

One of our newest Newbies was a California surfer gal, complete with Sun-In streaks at the age of 17. That’s when every day was a good beach day!

Cheri/ “SoCal Silver”

Could a flip be flippier? SoCalSilver went from brunette to blonde in high school, age 17 here, and says “my cousin made me do it.” Just a preview of platinum, Cheri!

Chrissy

Chrissy’s got her “Brunette Mom” look going here, with a shorter crop, and a bit of dye on her naturally blonde hair. It’s not “big hair” or “bubbles” but an almost contemporary look.

Dara/"Greeneyes"

In an engagement pic at the age of 20, Dara wears a Farah enhanced with a body perm (which always made her hair look lighter and "reddish.") Pretty then, striking now!

Diana/OZ

When a friend looked at this, she exclaimed, “OMG, it’s Gidget.” Guess the bleachie beehive didn’t stand the test of time. Sigh. Nor did I. OZ at 19.

Goldie

Goldie's got a "half-Farah" going on here, and shiny blonde locks. Hmmmm. Thought she said she was the brunette sister! Here's one of her senior pics, at seventeen.

Karen/ “SaSS”

Here’s Karen in ’94, but she says she wore this style for a decade, so it qualifies as ‘80’s “big hair.” Long, poufy, curly, with what she says is a “mess of colors” in it.

Laura/ “Runnergal”

Just graduated from high school and hitting the beach, Laura works a side-swept pony tail and lots and lots of curls. What a cute little beach bunny.

Louann

Ah, the prom. Ah, the Age of Aquarius hair. Here’s Louann at 17, before layers, going shorter and shorter, and, oh yes, going gray.

Nadine/ “lookinggrayt”

Nadine’s got some curly locks going on at 25. She says this was one of her very favorite hairdo’s, kind of a curly shag, but admits that she might have started coloring already.

Ruth S./ “Ravenjourney”

Ruth went the curly route in the 80’s and opted for a perm at the age of 24. She writes that her hair got even bigger in the 90’s! I think we’d recognize her anywhere.

Sharon

A Brooke Shields look-alike, if ever there was one, here’s Sharon at 21. She says she was trying to look sexy, and ended up looking sulky! I don’t think so. . .

Shelby/ "Shelby B."

Here's Shelby's senior picture, taken shortly before she turned 17. Her hair is frosted here, "pulled through the cap and everything," and it's almost as cute as those braces!

Oh megawow everyone! You all knew how to work the look!
What strikes me as well is that we all look basically the same as we do now-just goes to show that it is not just the color of our hair that defines us (as OZ is always telling us!) grin

Diana, thanks for putting together another great feature! I loved seeing everyone’s photos and hope more members will send one in. But I think something is missing...where is our inspiration? Where is Goldie?!! ohh

Nadine

yea where are the usual suspects?? goldie??? lulubell??? greeneyes??? nothing shy about you ladies!!!

what a fun “step back in time”...everyone looks very nice for their decade.... smile

ps gidget was one of my all time fave movies..."frances lawrence and moon doggie"…

Posted by louann on 12/07 at 06:05 AM

Great pictures.  I wonder if Brooke Shields would look like Sharon if she went natural? LOL

Posted by Chrysalis on 12/07 at 06:50 AM

Mine too, Louann! Never realized I was channeling her ‘til my friend said that. I think I’ll rent some and have a Gidget movie festival!

As for Goldie, I already scooped that shot and am waiting for another one. Hint, hint.  I just know it’s gotta be good.

And the others?  I’m still waiting, ladies. I realize this was pre-digital camera days, but as I mentioned to Ravenjourney, if you don’t have a scanner, take it to your friendly local photo store, have them scan it to a CD. Then plop it into your computer, put it on your desktop, and send me one! cheese

Posted by Diana Jewell on 12/07 at 06:53 AM

I LOVE the pics!  It’s so much fun to see how we have all evolved.  I have always said I wouldn’t go back to my 20’s even is someone paid me $$$$.  Now I am SURE of it after that picture.  hee hee

Posted by Ravenjourney on 12/07 at 07:05 AM

Ahh Louann!  I just wnet back and read your post.  I am laughing..I am picturing someone saying, “you look very nice for your decade”!  Ok, I’m just giggling away…

Posted by Ravenjourney on 12/07 at 07:08 AM

I giggled over that too, Ravenjourney. Hey, our decades ain’t done yet! cool smirk

Posted by Diana Jewell on 12/07 at 07:10 AM

This is just PRICELESS!  Delightful...now we really are family...with photos to prove it!

Oh you’re going to make me dig for another blast from the past??  This could be painful! Heee....

Posted by Goldie on 12/07 at 07:19 AM

OK, brought to you by popular demand, now we have Goldie in The Way We Were!

Posted by Diana Jewell on 12/07 at 11:20 AM

Hee, hee, Diana...it looks like we have matching sweaters!
Long live the cowl neck!

Posted by Goldie on 12/07 at 12:08 PM

OH, you ladies look so great - so young, so cute! Okay, maybe I’ll peruse the old photos. Diana - this was really fun. Thanks for putting it together! :o)

Posted by greeneyes on 12/07 at 12:23 PM

Are we alive? Whew! For awhile there, the site was down. Mine, and probably hundreds of others. Thanks, host! cool grin Oh yeah, Greeneyes, this is a must! It’s just a hoot. Dig deep and find something fun.

Goldie, cowl necks were huge of a certain era. Oh, and mohair sweaters! Now, want to ask, do any of you remember falls??? They’d come in handy now, wouldn’t they, oh root-hiders? You know you can get little crown “poufs” to hide those roots, too. Just an idea!:cheese:

Posted by Diana Jewell on 12/07 at 01:35 PM

These pictures are priceless and so much fun to look at.

Thanks Diana for putting this together.

I think I’m going to have to go way back to the olden days to get hair shot.  Perm when I was just a kid maybe.  Or is that too long ago?

I’ve had this long thing goin’ on for years, a lot of years.  Like from college.  So, I’ll have to look through scads of photos to see what I’ve got. I’m thinking my junior prom.  Oh, what was I thinking?

Posted by Barbara on 12/07 at 03:07 PM

LOL thanks, Gidget, er, um, I mean, Diana. These are great!  You are right, Chrissy, I think we all look pretty much the same, just a different hair color and hair style. However, I’m still seeing some of these hairstyles. Just like clothing styles come and go so do hair styles. How fun!  I’m hoping once everyone sees these it will inspire them to send in their shot too.

Posted by Aziza on 12/07 at 03:39 PM

No joke, Aziza. I was at the Anna Sui show for Spring ‘10, and guess which hairstyle pranced down the runway? The very same one I have on the homepage—the Mod. It’s baaaaack.

Posted by Diana Jewell on 12/07 at 04:04 PM

OK, everybody, now Dara’s joined our Way We Were club! Come look! surprised

Posted by Diana Jewell on 12/07 at 10:25 PM

Dara.  Your picture is classic!  My sister always wore her hair that way...I always wondered how you all got it to do that.  smile

Posted by Ravenjourney on 12/08 at 05:27 AM

I love everyones “yesteryear” photos!  Once I get back to Canada I will go through all of the old shoe boxes full of photos that are in the basement and find one to send in.  Louann, you need to grow your hair long again, it looks so pretty in your prom photo!! wink

Posted by lulubell on 12/08 at 10:35 AM

Diana~ Your picture reminds me of when I used to wear my hair in a “fall”.  Remember that hairstyle?  I thought I was so “sophisticated”. tongue rolleye rolleyes  smirk  shut eye  As louann pointed out, “we all looked so very nice for our decade”. Really makes we think, What was I thinking?!?

Posted by Aziza on 12/08 at 10:58 AM

Oh my.  Dara you have an add-a-bead necklace!! Didn’t everyone have to have one of those.  Goldie you had the “winged” hair (I had that, too)!!  Laura, the Chrissy Snow side ponytail!!  Louann, my brother’s date to the prom wore a dress like that and her hair like--was it the Laurie Partridge?  Oh the memories!!

Diana, I personally think you look like you’re straight out of the “bleach blanket bingo” type movies--you know Annette Funnicello (I know I misspelled that) in the beach movies with the sweater on at night!!  Oh the memories!!!

Posted by greatmom on 12/08 at 11:09 AM

Aziza, I asked above if anybody remembered falls! Mine were long, though, and brown!  Once I went blonde, it was bye-bye falls!  I loved ‘em. In fact, I’d like to plop one on right now. Nobody would have to wait for their hair to grow in if we all could find a handy dandy fall! In silver, of course!

Oh, Lulubell, I’m hoping you don’t return from Florida in the Spring! oh oh

Sorry, greatmom, my beach movies were limited to Gidget. I wasn’t “allowed” to watch Beach Blanket Bingo! But I knew about Annette and Frankie Avalon! LOL

Posted by Diana Jewell on 12/08 at 01:41 PM

Diana, I only watched after I was in my 20’s and working.  I was home from work, and they had a marathon on TBS, I believe it was.  Those movies looked like a fun time.  It still brings back great memories!

Posted by greatmom on 12/08 at 02:06 PM

Diana~ You did indeed.  wink Sorry I missed that.  A fall would indeed come in handy dandy for those transitioning.  And it would be fun for those of us who are finished but playing the waiting game for longer hair.

Posted by Aziza on 12/08 at 02:09 PM

OK, wahooo—I just went to http://www.hairextensions.com and searched for Falls. Found some. A lot have attached headbands (I remember mine just having combs), still makes it easy. And some, voila!, come in shades of silver.  I found a medium bob-length looking one called Smitten with 4, count ‘em, 4 shades of gray. Marble Fudge (a charcoal looking color), Licorice Twist (silver), Vanilla Marble (silver white) and Winter Sun (pure white). It’s synthetic hair for $54.95.

They also have human hair ones, too, but not such a wide shade range.

Go browse. Ya want a fall? You can HAVE a fall!

Posted by Diana Jewell on 12/08 at 02:29 PM

Falls! Do we have to be ‘women of a certain age’ to remember them? Never got to wear one although my sister did.

A medium bob sounds great.

I do have a picture of me wearing a Jeff Beck look-alike wig that actually didn’t look too bad.

Question:  Has anyone tried clip in bangs?  Synthetic or real? I’d like to find a wig shop to try some on.

Did on a trip to Australia. Since it took a while to get it on over my hair, my impatient husband left me in the store.

Oh my, ‘add on’ or ‘pop beads’ - they were the epitome of chic. Cool!

Off to browse!

Thanks for all this information.
Barbara

Posted by Barbara on 12/08 at 03:00 PM

Voila!  There ya go!  Good job, Diana! My hair was actually long enough that I could create my own “fall” on top of my head and when I was finished I had a “page boy”. It was my signature style for one summer.  LOL  Very chic, at least I thought so.  LOL

Posted by Aziza on 12/08 at 03:05 PM

I love it, great pics ladies! I remember all those styles. It’s fun to see how far we’ve come.

May have to check out that hair extensions website, sounds like fun.  grin

Posted by Medusa on 12/08 at 04:41 PM

My internet went out yesterday, so had to wait until this morning to connect with the world again. :o) I forgot about the add on beads. I never got as many as I wanted, and now I would want silver, of course. :o)

Never had heard of falls and clip-on bangs! Very enlightening. :o)

Posted by greeneyes on 12/09 at 06:16 AM

ok, I am curious...what is an addd a bead necklace?

Posted by Ravenjourney on 12/09 at 06:34 AM

Hello Ravenjourney! Well, you would pick out a chain and then buy beads of different sizes to string onto in. Some beads were smooth and some had a bit more personality. I had friends who would entirely fill their chain, and others like me, only had a small amount. I only remember them in yellow gold at that time, though I wouldn’t have bought white gold at that time, so may have been ignoring it. ;o)

Posted by greeneyes on 12/09 at 06:42 AM

Oh!  I must have missed that trend.  I would definitely choose silver now.  smile

Posted by Ravenjourney on 12/09 at 06:45 AM

Me too! :o)

Posted by greeneyes on 12/09 at 06:54 AM

Hi All,
I was still in the spirit of nostalgia last night when there was a program about Joan Baez. It took me right back, the protest songs ( I met my DH on a march), my long hair.... smile
Then, back to the present- Joan has lovely gray hair cut in a really neat short style. She looks a very attractive and ‘grown up ‘ lady, tho’ she still has her idealistic views! grin

Posted by Chrissy on 12/09 at 07:16 AM

Chrissy, I love Joan Baez’ song, “Aren’t We Aging Well”.  Seems appropriate.  smile

Posted by Ravenjourney on 12/09 at 07:19 AM

Oops, the title is You’re Aging Well

Posted by Ravenjourney on 12/09 at 07:21 AM

Oops, the title is You’re Aging Well.

Posted by Ravenjourney on 12/09 at 07:32 AM

Ravenjourney-
I think you had it right the first time! I love ‘em all, they bring tears to my eyes. smile

Posted by Chrissy on 12/09 at 07:33 AM

Nobody has changed very much at all!

Posted by Sharon on 12/09 at 08:41 AM

Speaking of Joan Baez, have either of you checked out the Great Inspirations section lately? She’s in there, and you can see the short haircut that Chrissy describes.

We do add to Great Inspirations from time to time, so it’s always worth checking back on. wink

Posted by Diana Jewell on 12/09 at 08:41 AM

Heee, Sharon, I think you’re looking at these pics through misty watercolor eyeglasses!  But that’s a sweet thing to say.

Posted by Diana Jewell on 12/09 at 08:51 AM

Diana, I just read your comment above and I quote....."Oh, Lulubell, I’m hoping you don’t return from Florida in the Spring!” Not sure I know what you mean???? Did I miss something??
smile

Posted by lulubell on 12/09 at 09:05 AM

I’ve just found some silver ponytails on eBay

Posted by Sharon on 12/09 at 09:08 AM

Well, Lulubell, you promised to send in a “yesteryear” shot of you when you return home from Florida. I thought you went down there for the whole winter. Geeze, don’t think we can all wait that long!! LOL

Posted by Diana Jewell on 12/09 at 09:15 AM

OK, now I get it! LOL  Just look at Aziza’s photo again, I looked VERY similar to her with the long hair style of the seventies, waves and all!  Even my hair color back then was the same as hers in the photo above! Just imagine my face in her photo and you will get a good idea of how I looked at the same age, in fact I had the same hairstyle forever! wink

Posted by lulubell on 12/09 at 09:23 AM

Sharon, went to the link. Oh, would that we all had such a great white color! That inspired me to go to Ebay/US and search gray wigs. Nice to know that our haircolor, ladies, is suitable for Cosplay and Grannie wigs!

Posted by Diana Jewell on 12/09 at 09:43 AM

What a fun section!  I agree with Sharon, no one has changed much at all.

Posted by Shelby B on 12/09 at 04:30 PM

Wigs!  Love the idea of changing it up.  I’ve had the same non-hairstyle for well, ever.  I wouldn’t know what to do in terms of a suitable cut and how to style it. I’ve become used to washing, conditioning and letting it air dry, come what may.

Here’s what I’m thinking.  Clip-on bangs. Has anyone used them?  Any suggestions?

But, I don’t know how I’d match or get close to the front color of mostly brown with a sprinkling of silvers as well as my overall texture.

Barbara
Any advice please!

Posted by Barbara on 12/09 at 07:54 PM

We have a new Way We Were gal! Come peek!

Posted by Diana Jewell on 12/09 at 08:59 PM

diana you made a large leap from gidget to OZ ...although my fave gidget movie was gidget goes hawaian...she was NOT a blonde...moondoggie was ALWAYS pretty darn cute ...saw him all grown up in trader joes a few years ago...short but still moondoggie… smile

ahh gidge....

Posted by louann on 12/10 at 06:35 AM

Shelby, you haven’t changed at all, still cute as a button, even without the braces! cheese

Posted by lulubell on 12/10 at 06:39 AM

You saw Moondoggie??? Be still my gidget heart.

Posted by Diana Jewell on 12/10 at 07:30 AM

Wow Diana you didn’t waste anytime getting that posted!  heehee...braces, they were the bane of my teenage existance!  But now of course I am happy with the end results! :D

Lulubell, you are too kind!  When will be seeing your new/old pic?

Cookies??  What cookies Louann?  Care is share this secret recipe?

Posted by Shelby B on 12/10 at 08:05 AM

Yep, Louann. Already made the infamous cookies this year. In fact, I convinced my husband to help me so I would have company in the kitchen. I was especially glad he was there when I encountered my very first kitchen fire. heheheh… Somehow I dropped a pot holder in the oven without knowing it and when I opened the oven door for the last pan of cookies, whoosh! Had me a nice flame! Who knows what I would have done if I had been by myself. Probably would have made a mess of the kitchen, trying to put it out. :o) My husband calmly grabbed tongs and put the flaming pot holder in a sink full of water. But the cookies still tasted fine. :o)

Posted by greeneyes on 12/10 at 08:09 AM

Shelby - Here’s the recipe. This year we were more liberal with the cranberries, chocolate chips, and toffee bits, adding about an extra 1/4 cup of each. I recommend it. :o) But please, DO NOT put the pot holder in the oven with the cookies. :o)

Cranberry Chip Cookies
1 cup butter, softened
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 ¼ cups all purpose flour
½ teaspoon baking powder
¼ teaspoon salt
1 ½ cups (9 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips
1 ½ cups dried cranberries
¾ cup chopped pecans
½ cup English toffee bits or almond brickle chips

In a mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar. Add eggs and vanilla; mix well. Combine the flour, baking powder and salt; gradually add to the creamed mixture and mix well. Stir in chocolate chips, cranberries, pecans and toffee bits. (Dough will be stiff). Drop by rounded tablespoonfuls 2 inches apart onto ungreased baking sheets. Flatten slightly. Bake at 350 degrees for 11-14 minutes or until set and edges are lightly browned. Cool for 2 minutes before removing from baking sheets.
Yield: about 6 dozen.

Posted by greeneyes on 12/10 at 08:14 AM

What fun!  This is a nice pick-me-up since I’m running on slow mode due to a cold.  What a bummer that it took a cold to slow me down longt enough to check this out.

As I said, what fun you girls are having and what a trip down memory lane.  You were all so gorgeous but now you are fabulous and gorgeous Dah-lings!

In my pre-marriage decade, everyone said I looked like Annette Funicello.  My mom still has the pictures of me from waaayyy back.  I’ll just say that it would take an act of congress to get them.

Posted by Marisa on 12/10 at 08:14 AM

Well, greeneyes, I guess you could say that the “fire is still burning” between you and your DH!  Heee..sorry, I couldn’t resist that one!  I’m glad you AND the cookies are fine!

Posted by Goldie on 12/10 at 08:16 AM

Very funny, Goldie! :o)

Posted by greeneyes on 12/10 at 08:18 AM

Oh YAY!!!  I just asked for the recipe back in Talk on!  I see you beat me to it. Now if I can get the batter to beat!  Soooo excited.

Marisa, I have officially passed an Act of Congress to see you as Annette! LOL

Posted by Diana Jewell on 12/10 at 08:18 AM

Marisa- Would it help if we sign a petition to send to your Mom to get at least one leeeetle picture of your “Annette” days???  We wanna’ see it!

Posted by Goldie on 12/10 at 08:20 AM

Cranberry Chip Cookies A La Potholder - yum I think I’ll try them, um, sans potholder of course.

I’m so glad your DH was there to be your night in shining armor and that everything was okay, especially the cookies wink .

Posted by Marisa on 12/10 at 08:20 AM

I’ll sign the petition!  smile hmmmm...maybe i’ll make some cookies, too!

Posted by Ravenjourney on 12/10 at 08:22 AM

Thanks greeneyes!  They sound delicious!!  How is it that men are always able to keep calm and handle situations like that?!  I probably would have freaked and tossed water in the oven, ruining the batch!

Acts of Congress are passed with votes, right?  Well I do believe they are adding up Marisa!  And I hope your cold passes quickly.

Posted by Shelby B on 12/10 at 08:24 AM

I was too lazy to get out my large mixer and instead, used my handheld. It struggled to get it mixed and began smelling like it was about to burn up. :o)

Yeah, we need to see your Annette look, Marisa!

Posted by greeneyes on 12/10 at 08:26 AM

Oh my gosh!  I really am in slow mode - 4 posts before I could get me next coment in and it wasn’t even that long.

I’ll see what I can do but don’t expect it anytime soon.  After all Congress is having issues these days.  sorry I just couldn’t resist the dig.

Just for the record I don’t see the resemblance to Annette and I forgot about those who said I also looked like Valerie Bertinelli (sp?) um that was mostly guys.  My motto for over flattery guys was - RUN AWAY, RUN AWAY!

Posted by Marisa on 12/10 at 08:28 AM

Oh, that recipe sounds yummy. wink I’ll have to whip up a batch too, minus the pot holder.  Thanks for sharing.  My computer has been down so I’ve missed out on all the fun.  We had a blizzard here in the Midwest yesterday. It actually started on Tuesday. I was supposed to watch my little honey boy #1 yesterday but went the day before to try and beat the weather.  It was nasty traveling and the roads were rather greasy.  All the schools and a lot of the businesses were closed.  My son and DIL’s driveway had 3 foot drifts and my car was totally drifted in.  It’s a white car and it blended right in with the snow drift. It’s good to be back home but it was very disappointing to not have my computer working.  Hopefully I’ve gotten all the kinks out and it’s OK now.  Lots of awesome additions to the newbies category.  And yes, Marisa, an Annette photo would make a great addition.  cheese

Posted by Aziza on 12/10 at 08:35 AM

Oooh, this is sounding cuter by the moment. Valerie Bertinelli, huh? Maybe you turned into run, run, runaround Sue! LOL

Ha! Greeneyes, NOW you know what I went through with the handheld last year. But now I’ve solved my little problem. Can’t wait for my mixer to arrive! Oh, anybody have a recipe for sugar cookies? I feel a baking surge coming on.

Posted by Diana Jewell on 12/10 at 08:35 AM

Aziza—I’ve seen that the rest of the country is pretty hard hit. Can’t imagine the huge snowdrifts! And how you found your white car in one is beyond me. Everybody, please, drive very carefully!

Posted by Diana Jewell on 12/10 at 08:38 AM

So, is this the updated recipe with the extra 1/4 cup already added in or is the 1/4 cup in addition to this recipe?

Posted by Aziza on 12/10 at 08:38 AM

A baking surge...reminds me of my baking style...kind of like hot flashes.  smile Feeling festive today for no reason...well, it’s probably all of you!  Anyway, I’m making gingerbread with my 4-year-old today.  I’m going to add the “infamous cookie recipe” to the baked cookies I send to my grown up son and his wife.

Posted by Ravenjourney on 12/10 at 08:39 AM

I DO have a great sugar cookie recipe Diana!  Unfortunately, that cookbook is packed already. (I have a whole bookcase of cookbooks....call it a weakness!)

I’m softening the butter for tea-infused shortbread cookies as I type…

Posted by Goldie on 12/10 at 08:45 AM

I do have to say the landscape is very beautiful.  We will definetly have a white Christmas this year.  There have been so many years where we haven’t.  We’d get a little snow but it would melt before Christmas came.  My 2nd son’s birthday is the 18th and we used to live out in the country with a wooded hill in our backyard.  My DH had cut a path through the woods for sledding.  It was always part of my son’s party to go sledding.  Quite a few years the sledding part had to be postponed due to lack of snow. The people who bought our house have twin boys so I’m sure they will be enjoying that path this year. And yes, everybody, please drive carefully if you live in a snowy climate.  I saw too many cars in the ditch on my way home.  The first couple of snowfalls are always difficult until everyone “remembers” how to drive in this stuff.

Posted by Aziza on 12/10 at 08:46 AM

Your cookbook is packed, Goldie?  Are you going somewhere?  I have to admit I am a bit of a cookbookaholic myself. Tea-infused shortbread sounds really good.

Posted by Aziza on 12/10 at 08:48 AM

Aziza - Yes, be careful in your winter wonderland!

No, this is the official recipe. We added the extra 1/4 cup to these measures. We like a lot of stuff in our cookies, but if you like more dough, just follow the recipe.

I have a very good sugar cookie recipe to share if you want to roll out and cut. I don’t have a good one for the drop kind.

Posted by greeneyes on 12/10 at 08:49 AM

OK, thanks greeneyes.  I do like extras.  grin The more the merrier.  cheese  Yes, please do share, if it’s not too much trouble.

Posted by Aziza on 12/10 at 08:51 AM

Hmmmm, haven’t advanced to the roll and cut stage yet, greeneyes.  LOL

Posted by Diana Jewell on 12/10 at 08:53 AM

No trouble at all. I have some recipes on my computer, so I’m just cutting and pasting.

This is a very old recipe handed down. We roll ours out fairly thick and frost them liberally, but that is our preference. These are my favorites, second only to chocolate chip cookies. Beware! These are addicting! I just can’t stop eating these! :o)

Old Fashioned Sugar Cookies
3 cups flour
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon baking powder
2 sticks butter, softened
2 eggs
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla

In large mixing bowl, combine flour, baking soda and baking powder. Add 2 sticks of softened butter; mix together. In another bowl beat the eggs. To the eggs, add the sugar and vanilla. Mix well, and then add this to the first mixture. Chill the dough until easy to roll out and cut with cookie cutters. Bake cookies at 375 degrees for 6 to 8 minutes or until very lightly browned. Allow to cool, then apply icing.

Sugar Cookie Icing
3 cups powdered sugar
1 tablespoon white corn syrup
2 tablespoons melted butter
3 tablespoons hot water (or enough for desired consistency)

Combine and mix well. Add food coloring for variety. Spread onto sugar cookies.

Sorry, Diana. If anyone has a good drop sugar cookie, I’d love to try it. I’ve tried some, but they just don’t compare to the flavor of the roll and cut kind, in my opinion.

I only runaround in circles Diana LOL.

Be careful out there in snow and bad weather ladies.  I’m glad you got there and back okay Aziza.  It’s in the low 40’s and partly cloudy right now but last Friday was fun with snow.  We don’t get it often in the Housston area so it’s a big deal.

Enjoy your baking, I can’t start mine yet.  I think I’m going to try going into work for a little bit.  They need some sewing done before Friday.

Bye y’all.

Posted by Marisa on 12/10 at 09:07 AM

Sounds good, greeneyes.  Thanks for sharing!

Posted by Aziza on 12/10 at 09:09 AM

Thanks, Marisa.  I like the sounds of your weather much better.  I really don’t like the cold weather we get here in WI.  The snow is OK, to an extent, but the bitter cold can be pretty unbearable at times.  Have fun at work.

Posted by Aziza on 12/10 at 09:16 AM

Aziz, funny you say that about the weather.  My husband and I went to watch my precious, adorable 8 year old son’s Christmas program this morning.  Is there anything cuter than 153 3rd graders singing Christmas songs??  Of course, I think not.  What’s funny is that I’m in the middle of Mississippi really close to the Alabama state line.  It got down to 29 last night and the high today is 48.  You should have heard the parents complaining about how cold it was and that they had to, horror of all horrors, wear a coat!!  The children (mine especially) just about refuse to wear coats.  My son says that he can’t play at recess in them becuase he can’t move!!  It’s a good thing other areas of the country need coats, because if they were depending on the south, they would be in trouble!!  My husband saw a really cute Alabama (yes, Roll Tide Roll--win the championship!!!!!) boggin for our son, and my son said he would never wear a hat or gloves!!  Yet, he wants to move to Alaska for a month (ha ha) so he can see “real” snow!  We had 1/4 of an inch here this past winter for the first time in 16 years.

Posted by greatmom on 12/10 at 09:29 AM

That’s ok, greeneyes. I’m on my way to go buy some cookie cutters! Still not sure about the “technique” though. I’m lousy at piecrusts! confused

Posted by Diana Jewell on 12/10 at 09:38 AM

greatmom~ That’s funny about your son.  And about others complaining about the temperature. I guess it’s what you are used to.  I’m looking for the “perfect” place to live, not too hot, not too cold and just a little snow, IF, and that’s a BIG IF, I want to see it.  I’ve lived my whole life in WI where we get LOTS of snow and bitter cold, and it seems to last forever!  As the saying goes in WI, we have 2 seasons.  Winter and road construction.  LOL

Posted by Aziza on 12/10 at 10:03 AM

Oh wow, I’m loving this site today, thanks for the lovely recipes, greeneyes!
We’ve got a cold snap forecast for this weekend too, not on the scale of yours Aziza, but they’re actually starting to talk about a white Christmas!
We’ve had 3 Nativity plays to go to this week, and in one of them our granddaughter had to play the Star (you know, the one in the East) and sing a song. Sha actually managed to get a prize for ‘best performance’, talk about maxing up a part! cheese
Drive safely everyone! grin

Posted by Chrissy on 12/10 at 01:28 PM

That’s awesome, Chrissy!  I guess you could say “a star is born” wink cheese

Posted by Aziza on 12/10 at 01:33 PM

Ouch, Aziza!!!! I love children’s nativity plays! Congrats to your granddaughter, Chrissy, for getting a “Best Actress!” Oh, can an Oscar be far behind?

Posted by Diana Jewell on 12/10 at 01:36 PM

LOL I thought that was a pretty good line, no?

Posted by Aziza on 12/10 at 01:45 PM

Did I say something wrong, Diana?  confused I certainly didn’t mean to, if that’s the way you took it.  I loved that movie with Barbra Streisand, A Star is Born.  I was trying to be “witty”.

Posted by Aziza on 12/10 at 01:59 PM

Hee, hee Aziza…

Chrissy, THREE nativity plays to go to??  Whew! I bet you were so proud of your granddaughter!  Good for her!

I still have my “angel wings” from my first grade Christmas performance....we sang, “Ten Little Angels”...ahhh...what a night!  I’m getting a little misty just remembering....

Posted by Goldie on 12/10 at 02:09 PM

Another “tissue moment” brought to you by GGLG tongue wink .  I would love to see a nativity play by little children.  I’ve only seen the big people kind with one or two little ones.

I think Diana was talking about your two seasons, Aziza.  that would be an OUCH.

Posted by Marisa on 12/10 at 02:26 PM

Nope—I was talking about her funny line—A star is born! Cracked me up, Aziza! LOL Nothing wrong—I loved it. PS: I loved that movie, too.  But did you see the original version with Judy Garland? OMG. Talk about a tear jerker.

Posted by Diana Jewell on 12/10 at 02:29 PM

Ya’ know, I’ve always wanted to see that version…
So, Diana, on a scale of 1 to 10 on the tissue box scale (1 being the lowest tear jerker, to 10 being the highest tear jerker) how does that version rate?

Posted by Goldie on 12/10 at 02:37 PM

Nope, only the Barbra version.  I thought Kris Kristofferson was such a hottie.  Although not a great singer.  smirk

Posted by Aziza on 12/10 at 02:41 PM

How does that version rate? Scale of 1-10? 12.

Oh, Kris sang in the Streisand version? In the Garland version, the husband does not sing. What was his name? Oh, James Mason. Imagine James Mason singing! LOL

Posted by Diana Jewell on 12/10 at 02:51 PM

I just saw they have the Oscar winning 1937 version on YouTube starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March.  However, reading some of the comments it sounds like there’s a glitch in the movie and you don’t get to see it all, something about commercials interrupting it.

Posted by Aziza on 12/10 at 03:04 PM

Wow, never heard of that version.  rolleyes

Posted by Diana Jewell on 12/10 at 03:12 PM

Niether had I.  Barbra does an awesome job.  She has such a fantastic voice, quite the range.  I love listening to her.

Posted by Aziza on 12/10 at 03:15 PM

Oh, no doubt about it. She has quite the instrument. But Garland wasn’t exactly chopped liver, either. I saw her perform once, in person. An incredible, magnetic performance. Afterwards, she shook my hand and held on to it. I was just a kid, but it was real goose bump time. I was in awe.

Posted by Diana Jewell on 12/10 at 03:21 PM

Oh, so true.  She does have a fantastic voice too.  How wonderful for you!  I can’t imagine how I’d be after that.  You Lucky lady. grin

Posted by Aziza on 12/10 at 03:25 PM

I think shell-shocked describes it. I had just seen this tour de force performance, no special effects in those days, just The Voice. And suddenly, she was holding my hand! Wow. Now you know why the song Over the Rainbow makes me tear up.

Posted by Diana Jewell on 12/10 at 03:30 PM

I meant did have.  Quite a sad ending for such a talented young lady.  I think shell-shocked would be a good way to describe the feeling.

Posted by Aziza on 12/10 at 03:34 PM

Yeah. Booze and drugs, never a good mix. But the times in between, when she performed, or when she did her TV show, were really just magical. downer

Posted by Diana Jewell on 12/10 at 03:46 PM

I know this is potentially pi, but did anyone see the nativity episode on Curb Your Enthusiasm?

It wasn’t a tear jerker in the traditional sense, and certainly wasn’t adorable as when kids are performing.

But, it was hilarious and inappropriate on many levels.  ‘Ya gotta like the Larry David sense of humor a la Jerry Seinfeld to appreciate it. It cracked me right up to the point of tears.

And as if that wasn’t enough, right about that time, I attended a Larry interview in SF. It was a fundraiser for the NRDC.  He was interesting and funny, especially when audience members were able to ask him questions, which I did.  He was both delightful and self-effacing.

At the cocktail party, I reintroduced myself to him, shook his hand and chatted for a few minutes asking him a followup question.  Dinner was really fun, too.

And best of all, he’s gray! I recommend that he’s included in the cool guy section for sure.

Barbara, sounds like a fun event!  Now for the really important question:  Since it was a cocktail party, what did you WEAR??

Posted by Goldie on 12/11 at 08:41 AM

While going through old paperwork yesterday, (shred, shred, shred) I came across an old bank statement envelope with a long forgotten, handwritten list on the back.

It has reminders for Tues, Weds, & Thurs. for that week.  But it was Wednesday’s list that made me chuckle.  Here’s the list:
Wednesday
-Order checks
-Get gas *Note: I am assuming for the car!
-Iron tablecloth
-Make pies & kosher turkey *Note: Must be Thanksgiving
-DYE HAIR *Note: Heeeee....from the postmarked date on the front of the envelope, I figure that’s when my artificial “color of choice” was Feria brand color “Espresso”!  Guess I liked to WEAR my coffee as well as drink it!!  Ahhh, the way I WAS!

Posted by Goldie on 12/11 at 08:54 AM

Did anyone ever try to mask gray with actual coffee?  Never worked for me. I guess even then my gray was resistant.

Posted by Chrysalis on 12/11 at 09:08 AM

Oh!  You both have brought back memories of the tension and challenge of doing all those things and making sure my hair was dyed before any event or activity...the agony of being so tired and the voice in my head that said..."you know you have to do it”...and me waiting until the MORNING OF the event and the rush and stress to get it done before I got dressed....

I am feeling pretty pleased with myself for eliminating that forever and replacing the time with coffee and my fuzzy slippers in front of my computer talking to all of you!

Posted by Ravenjourney on 12/11 at 09:16 AM

BTW...I used coffee and Feria/Espresso

Posted by Ravenjourney on 12/11 at 09:18 AM

I’ve never heard of using coffee to dye your hair.  Did it actually work?!?

Posted by Aziza on 12/11 at 09:27 AM

Nope! smile

Posted by Ravenjourney on 12/11 at 09:29 AM

The idea was that it would stain your hair the same way it stains anything else.  A friend of mine said it worked great for her.  For me not so good.  My hair smelled great if you like the smell of coffee but even the strongest brew didn’t do much.

Posted by Chrysalis on 12/11 at 09:42 AM

Chrysalis.  My hair is completely resistant, too.  Nothing really worked.  I tried the natural stuff, shampoos with color in them, and henna...only permanent dye worked, but only for two weeks or so until the silver grew again.  I had forgotten all of the things I tried until I read your post.

Posted by Ravenjourney on 12/11 at 09:46 AM

hmmm Interesting.  I suppose kind of like how you could use coffee and tea to dye different things.  Sounds good in theory though.  I would think you’d have to leave it on an awfully long time. And I imagine quite the drippy mess.

Posted by Aziza on 12/11 at 09:46 AM

Heee...especially if you got a latte’ to GO!

Posted by Goldie on 12/11 at 09:54 AM

It was rather sloppy.  You would pour it over you head several times and then allow your hair to dry with the coffee in it.  I ruined one shirt and several towels in the process.  My friend said it would work better over time but I liked drinking it better than pouring it over my head. smile

Posted by Chrysalis on 12/11 at 10:04 AM

and, don’t tell me.....the coffee didn’t come out of the clothes, just your hair!

Posted by Ravenjourney on 12/11 at 10:06 AM

My MIL used to use coffee to stain her whites to try to make them blend.  I have no idea what her process was.  No that I’m silver she’s trying everything she can to make hers shine.  She says that she’s tried several thing but not much helps.  I think it’s her water, septic tank, because there are stains in the sinks and toilet.  I think that if I lived there I might buy alot of bottled water to wash my hair with.

A latte’ yum but it’s not going in my hair LOL .

Posted by Marisa on 12/11 at 10:08 AM

woops, that’s “Now that I’m silver...”

Posted by Marisa on 12/11 at 10:09 AM

Ravenjourney, You are correct!!

Marisa, I have heard that you can by a shower head with a filter in in that is supposed to remove things that are bad for your hair.  Never tried it but it might work.

Posted by Chrysalis on 12/11 at 10:11 AM

Oh Chrysalis, I guess ruined towels and clothes from coffee is not much different than from dye.

Ruth, did you get my PM with the sewing/business books?

Posted by Marisa on 12/11 at 10:12 AM

Marisa,

Yes!  Thank you.  I hope to buy them over the holiday and do some reading before the new year.  I have been making lists, knitting, planning, baking and making evergreen garlands ... but I hope to have some “me” time in between.

Posted by Ravenjourney on 12/11 at 10:16 AM

OMG so wonderful. I love looking at the old photos. You girls were gorgeous then as you are gorgeous now

Posted by Katie on 12/11 at 10:41 AM

Chrysalis, my MIL only takes baths and thinks it’s odd that I take showers when I have a tub. They don’t even have a shower head in their bath.  But I’ll tell you, that’s good information to know in case we ever move into that type of situation, thanks.

Posted by Marisa on 12/11 at 12:15 PM

Goldie, I don’t know how I remem ... oh yeah, that’s right - I have photos.  Remember them from the olden days?  wink

I wore all silk - black pants, black shell with a gorgeous and colorfully abstract art-y long duster/top.

I usually use black as my base color for ‘outfits’ and then jazz it up with gem-colored or black and white, usually abstract designed tops that are on the flowy (I think I just made that word up)side.  Lots of movement.

Scarves are my passion!

Way behind on reading everyone’s posts, but I can’t not say something about “A Star is Born"--the 1938 version set the standard for the two remakes.  It won an Oscar for Best Writing (Dorothy Parker, David O. Selznick and Alan Campbell)and was nominated for everything from Best Picture to Best Actress to Best Actor to Best Director.  Definitely a film that should be seen--bring a hanky!

On a happier note, I hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday season!

i have got to go through the old photos and send one in.  was too busy with school and Christmas.  have some time now.
