Shira’s Story
Bold, Brave, and Beautiful!
Shira Levy, a vibrant, attractive brunette, read Going Gray, Looking Great!, then carefully considered all her options. One, I never suggested: shaving your head to go gray! Why on earth would she do such a thing? I'll let her tell you in her own words.
“It was really the only solution for me after ten years of coloring my hair every few weeks. It felt dry, unhealthy and, most of all, fake. I felt like I was hiding something – like a secret. My curiosity was growing about the real color with every peek-a-boo session from my roots, begging me to touch them up. I had a feeling that the only way I could get to the true natural color quickly and successfully, was to start the growth process from scratch, even it meant shaving it all off. I never considered an alternative, and was confident that I could deal with it no matter how it grew back. Brave? Maybe, but what a liberating feeling! I could finally start over with a brand new “virgin” head of hair, free of artificial color and chemicals... I must confess that a few wigs and hats helped me through the first two weeks in public, but by week three I had a funky and artsy “do” and I was ready for anything. I’m hoping that by sharing my story I may inspire you to take the plunge, and together we will make it more than just okay to go gray – we will make it “in,” chic,” “the new glam,” and safe to go for a new kind of sophisticated, sexy, wise and cool look.”

WOW, girl, you look great with or without hair.. I was never so brave as to shave my head, and went through months and months of growing it out. Are you naturally curly, or have you added some curl and body? Whatever, it looks wonderful with your complexion.. and the red dress and sterling silver necklace really enhance the POW-WOW factor.

Thank you for your feedback and compliments...yes, I am naturally curly, the curls came after my hair grew back to a certain length...I like to wear colors to enhance the hair like red, royal blue, deep purple, black, and silver jewelry ...it has become a conversation piece ever since I shaved it off, and I especially love what it stirs up in other women and people in general, mostly positive.
Thanks again for sharing, I appreciate it.
Blessings,
Shira

Shira,
I think yours was the first story I saw on this site, but didn’t remember being able to post a note!
Your hair looks so shiny and soft! Such a beautiful silver color, too!
Thanks for sharing your story...it really does encourage me to keep on with the time of transition, though I’m not as bold as you are, shaving it all off! :o)
If your hair is different now, an updated photo would be great to see! :o)

Dear Shira,
I applaud your boldness! You have inspired me to also take the plunge. This Friday I will have all of my artificially colored hair cut off. My hair is quite short to begin with, so perhaps less of a shock for me than others. I just ordered some beautiful tiechels (scarves) to help me (and my co-workers) get through the earliest part of the growing-out stage. I can’t wait to see what my natural hair will look like after 18 years of coloring it.
Thank you for sharing your story,
Lori Webert

Wow Shira,
You look fantastic! I use to have curly hair too, I am encouraged and am thinking of maybe cutting it short to get rid of the color and then regrowing. I like the length of my hair now (shoulder length) but should probably cut it to start the process. Thanks so much for sharing. You have courage!!!

Hi,
I hadn’t read some of these comments until today and wanted to reply and say thank you for your feedback and comments...it is so special to know you have inspired or had an effect on people you have never even met, just by doing what you do and sharing…
Just this weekend I had a 24 year old guy tell me that he thought my silver hair was beautiful and how cool it is that I don’t dye it - I really get a lot of positive feedback, especially when I least expect it, and it is so much fun…
One of the real ‘perks’ of not coloring my hair anymore, besides the obvious low maintenance, is the opportunity to make a bold statement, create a new look in my forties, and the freedom to be whatever and whoever I want to be without regard for others’ opinions...I have found that most people respect and admire that, especially the ones you would probably want to have in your life.
It’s been 2 1/2 years since I shaved my hair off and grown it back naturally, and in that time I have made a number of new friends and acquaintances who have only known me with this look, as opposed to old friends, acquaintances and family members, and it is so interesting that my ‘hair color’ has never been an issue with the new ones, but is always a topic of conversation with the old ones…
Anyway, enjoy the process and keep in touch, and please send in pictures, I’d love to see what you look like -
With love & blessings,
Shira

Am I the only one who thinks it makes you look 10 to 15 years older? I just don’t get it?
Posted by carrots1 on 08/16 at 10:56 AM
Well, from all the positive feedback I have received in the last 2 1/2 years it appears that you are the only one...it’s just a hair color, my face is still young at 46...and it’s a unique and real color in a sea of fake ones...I’m very proud of it…
Are you thinking about taking the plunge?
All the best to you.
Posted by shiralevy on 08/16 at 12:01 PM
Hello carrots1
I’m surprised you think shira looks older. I think the silver around her face gives her skin a youthful radiance and actually makes her look younger.
Posted by Sharon on 08/16 at 01:51 PM
Because we live in a society where for so long gray has = old, I think many people ignore the face entirely and look at the silver hair and think “old.” I think there was a harshness to Shira’s face when she had dark dye on her hair...and I agree with Moonlit_hair, that Shira’s natural silver gives her a healthy glow which makes her look vibrant! I have come to the conclusion that we all look better with our natural colors. We may look nice with dye, but better without! :o)
Posted by greeneyes on 08/16 at 03:14 PM
I agree with you 100 per cent greeneyes
Posted by lulubell on 08/16 at 04:31 PM
i totally agree...greeneyes...we live in such a youth oriented society (probably hasn’t changed much over the years in reality)...i was “colorfully challenged” i always liked my hair for the first few weeks..then the fading/brassy/sun damaged look would set in...then the roots...then living is so cal with the santa ana winds blowin...whew those roots would really show…
hats off ladies let’s show the doubters out there that gray hair does not equal a weekly “beauty parlor appointment” and a hair net every night ...or as my dear sweet mom would do wrap her hair in toilet paper then the hair net!!(although she had the most gorgeous white hair and embraced every one of those hairs till the day she died!)
Posted by louann on 08/17 at 06:32 AM
Shira, I have often kidded with my friends that I would shave my head when I was ready to finally “go gray” (after age 50). Right now I have about 7 wks growth of silver white contrasting against oriental black hair ( I have jet black eyebrows/very dark eyes). I’m not ready to shave my head, but I do have a haircut appt in 11 days (my 44th b-day!). I’m not ready for a boy cut but I am ready for a makeover. I admire that you just went for it, I love your attitude and I think you look great!!

Shira, I was inspired by your story. I am 46 years old and have always had lovely long layered reddish brown dyed hair that went past my shoulders that framed my face. It was crowning glory. I was always known for my hair, but I struggled with the gray regrowth every few weeks. Yesterday, I took the plunge and had my hair almost completely shaved off (similar to your picture above). Well, without doubt, I do not look at glamorous as you did in your photo. I know it takes guts to reach my lgoal of lovely silver/gray hair like yours and others I’ve seen on this website. I hope that my hair will grow quickly. In the meantime, I will be wearing a ballcap type hat for a few months. I know it will be worth it! Thanks for posting your story. No guts, no glory....right?
Posted by Irene on 08/31 at 02:11 PM
Thanks Irene for your feedback and sweet comments...congrat’s on being brave, becoming free of hair dye, and creating a new you!
Please send your pic’s in to the website so we can all share in your progress and success.
It’s definately worth it...be patient, get some cute hats and scarves, earrings, pretty colors of lipstick...you and everyone else will get used to it in no time.
Good luck and all the best,
Shira

Shira, I love the new short haircut! I think you wear a crop so well, you look beautiful.
P.S. Your curls remind me of my own hair texture. I am going for a crop next month and hope it will be long enough to still show the curl. Your color is so lovely!
Posted by lulubell on 10/08 at 05:59 AM
Very short hair is sensuous and powerful, and once you’ve tried it, it calls to you to come back....
Shira, you have the features to carry off any hairstyle well in silver. One of my favorites is Miss Fuschia. Change is natural! I’ve enjoyed the photo journal of your hairstyle adventures.

Thank you so much for the support and sweet feedback to both lulubell and LysaB, I really appreciate it...I needed a change and a ‘freshening’, and although I like it a lot and it’s so easy I’ll probably grow it out again…
Thanks again!

Hello Shira -
You look fantastic with your gorgeous silver hair - both long and short styles. Gives you a very unique look.
Curious, are you still short, or growing out again?
I just got my first “chop” 2 days ago, and it’s been 4 weeks since my last coloring.
I’m going for it - thanks for the inspiration!

Thank you so much for your feedback, and good for you for going for it...my hair is still short since it’s only been about 6 weeks since I cut it. I am growing it out again, enjoying the different stages and trying new styles along the way...my hair is very curly so it lends itself to different looks, depending on the products I use.
Thanks again for your sweet words and all the best,

Hi XinaMarie,
Thanks for writing...sounds like you’re still afraid but very close and need something or someone to clinch it for you, like a green light or a ‘knowing’ that no matter what you will look and be okay...hey, hair grows and if you don’t like it you can always go back to coloring, but unless you do it you will never know...it’s just hair after all…
DO IT! It is exciting, new, different, and you will notice so many wonderful things happening to you just because of this one change...good luck…

hello Shira,
with such a lovely perfect oval face you look wonderful with all of those hairstyles. Seeing your last cut I went off the the hairdressers and had a similar one. I have 2 months regrowth and my hair is really thick and coarse so it sits like a helmet on my head when it is short and my face is big and blousy so I thought I would look frumpy....but actually I am extremely pleased with it… and it makes me feel that being totally grey is not so far away.
So thank you kindly for the push! By the way you look gorgeous in coral red.

Hello Shira,
As a “Story Girl,” you’ve inspired so many of us here on GGLG. But imagine what your story could do on Oprah! As you may or may not know, Goldie is doing a write-in campaign. But it’s more than that. As a former Oprah makeover girl herself, she knows the producers to reach and is going to send in a book of our “Letters to Oprah.” I know some of us have written individually to Oprah before, but these can get easily lost in the 20,000 emails a day the show receives. This effort will be carefully targeted, and we will have strength in numbers. I urge you to go to the homepage, and see the “Hello, Oprah” link. Called Goldie’s Campaign, it will tell you all you need to know to share your story, once again, only this time, you may have Oprah herself reading it! Please join us in this campaign. Your doesn’t have to be long, just from the heart. Thanks!

Was it hard to control the curls when it was growing back out? Any special tricks you used?
I really like your blog with the recipes too!

Dear Shira,
I came across this website several months ago when I was thinking about going grey. I’m 49 now and have been colouring my hair brunette since I was 26. I found the photos of you and the other women on here a great help in getting through the difficult transition stages. I would have loved to have had the courage to have the buzz like you, but instead I went for a more gradual transition over many months with blonde highlights blending in my grey roots. Yesterday I had a short hair cut which removed all of the highlights. I was so delighted when I saw my naturally grey hair for the first time that I almost cried. Best of all my husband (who did not encourage this in the early stages) really loves my new look. I feel rejuvenated and can’t wait to experiment with clothes, jewellery and make-up to complement my hair. I just wanted to say thank you for posting your story and photos and giving me the inspiration and confidence to make my own transition.
With best wishes,
Rose

How nice to read your posting. Even if you decide not to share your transition at GGLG, I hope you documented it for your own sake. It sounds like you have completed your transition with flying colors. (All shades of gray, of course!) Please do consider joining in the chat & encouraging others in their journey, just as others were able to inspire you with theirs!

Namaste Shira!! I have a similar story too. My stylist told me my roots were almost completely white. I was curious what I would look like so I thought I would try going platinum! Big mistake....due to thyroid challenges, my hair was very dry and brittle, breaking off...so I bought some stunning wigs (no one can tell they are wigs)and cut all my hair off! That was September 29th...I agree with you..it was freeing, empowering and liberating! My question to you is regarding makeup...I’m finding it hard to get the right make up to compliment my skin tone and hair color. Any suggestions?
Posted by lovinlife on 12/07 at 09:38 AM
Shira,
You look stunning no matter what the length of your hair is.
How courageous of you to have taken this route.
Lovinlife,
I too had/have experienced thyroid issues that impacted my hair - thinning, dry, crispy and breakage.
I was wondering where you purchased your wigs and who made them.

Hi, Happy New Year...I haven’t been involved on this site in a while so I apologize not to have responded to those of you who have taken the time to comment, compliment, share and give such lovely feedback...thank you...it makes my day!
I must admit that every now and again I have my ‘moments’, like many of you I suppose, of wishing my hair was dark again or being curious about going blonde, or wanting to add low lights, etc…
And then someone, out of the blue, just says something really great about my look, the texture of my hair, the color, or someone says that they admire my boldness and confidence, or I get an extra 25% discount in a store:)!
I like that I stand out in a sea of women who are so scared to do what we have done, and that I try all kinds of styles and accessories to add extra funkiness to my look...and that I have inspired my Mother and all kinds of friends to go for it as well…
Anyway, just wanted to share my thoughts today with all you silver foxes and thank you again for sharing as well. The support and info. on this site is incredible - thank you Diana!!!

I have enjoyed reading your story, along with the comments from readers. I, too, have been hooked on haircoloring for years...I don’t believe I would have had the courage to shave my head; however, for me that decision was made for me. I was diagnosed with cancer, and as usually occurs, I lost my hair during chemotherapy. Once my hair began growing back in, haircoloring was discouraged due to the chemicals still floating around in my body. (in addition to the chemicals, hair color is not guaranteed - you could end up with who knows what color). So, I was forced to allow my gray hair to ‘live’. Over the past few months, I have received many compliments about my gray hair. Now, it’s time for the big decision; do I color again or let the ‘grays flow’.
After reading your story and the comments, you have helped me make the decision; it’s gray for me !…
Thanks to all for comments/stories - you helped me decide.

Hi Debb, so happy to hear from you and others in response to my latest post…
I’m so sorry you went through such a challenging time with your health - I hope by now you are on your way to a full recovery.
May I recommend that you take it six months at a time...after I let my ‘real hair’ grow in I thought I would let a few weeks pass until I colored it again, and my husband suggested I give it some real growth time to see how it looked, how I felt with it, etc...after 6 months I thought, you know what, why don’t I give it a year and then that will really be a significant amount of time to live with it and see how it grows out, the texture, the color, the feedback I get from people...and after a year it was so easy for me, it looked great, so little hair maintenance compared to years of coloring every few weeks, and such positive reactions and such a big change in me, all of a sudden I became a “Wise Woman”, because of the color, but mostly because of all I experienced…
Anyway, so glad to inspire and share. I’d love to see photos...all the best to you...xoxo

I just had to post today and share my experience from this weekend...was at a b-day party for a friend where I saw people I hadn’t seen in a while and I had blown out my hair in like a Marilyn Monroe style, (picture silver in place of blonde) and I did not stop getting compliments all evening from both the men and the women - who ALL color their hair! What a feeling...and a good friend even asked me “so when are you gonna start modeling?”...she even offered to be my manager if I decide to some day, ha!...anyway, just had to share with you, was so much fun...I am so glad I did this young, I feel like the ‘aging process’ is going to be so much easier...have a beautiful day...xoxo

Wow Daniella, thanks for writing to me and sharing, I would love to see pictures...so you actually did a complete shave?? How did it feel right after, what was your experience with the ‘outside world’ and how is it growing in?
It’s been 4 + years for me and although I have had a number of challenging moments where I felt like I wanted to color again, I quickly got through it, changed my hair style, added a cool accessory or lip stick color, etc etc...now I’ve been growing it and blowing it out (during the cooler weather)and I have been loving and enjoying it...I keep re-inventing my look and people can hardly keep up with me...it’s great fun!
Hope to hear from you soon.

Hi Shira,
No I didn’t do a complete shave, I knew I would cut it VERY short- to get all the color off. My husband was hoping I would keep some length on and I was trying to grow it to an acceptable length for him- gotta keep the guys happy- but then I finally said- ok, ‘nuff- gotta make ME happy so off it went!!!
I felt relieved when the cut was done and am really enjoying the ease of it. The only drawback I can think of is it’s winter here and my head is cold- LOL , even indoors, but that’s what hats are for!
All reactions have been good about the color, but I think the cut is shocking for friends and family- (which is ok with me
. Heee!
Thanks for writing back!

Shira, I found you such an inspiration! I DID IT! I went today to a salon and had all of it buzzed off! I feel liberated! I’ve been wanting to go natural for many years but got lots of opposition. Well, not anymore! I called my husband at work, grabbed my daughter and off I went. I am happy and so excited to see the natural gray come in. I cannot wait to see what it comes out like. I love gray hair. I have been every color under the rainbow with a level 2 soft black being the latest color. NO MORE COLOR!!! YES! The other up side....great for the pool and I joined the YMCA so also made up my mind to put myself first and stop risking my health to take care of everyone else. Happy to say, husband seems alright. I’ve been married for 23 years and looking forward to many more. Psst..He has been gray for years. He started going prematurely gray in his twenties. I’ve always loved his gray. I will never understand the double standards in this world. My brother told me that its alright for men to go gray but not women! Ha! I’m following in my older sisters footsteps! She let her gray go years ago. I took some pics getting my hair buzzed and would love to upload them. Anyway, thanks for giving me that kick in the b**tt, unknowingly of course.

Hi shira,
You look fabulous with color on your hair, but I love the silver, short or long you are beautiful !
Before I found this site, I took the clippers to my hair and cut it 1-inch long.
I don’t have as much silver as most of the ladies here, but decided to go natural and stop dyeing my hair in March. So I cut ALL the chemical color off. It had been a long time since I had seen my natural color.
You are an inspiration.
I hope my hair looks as beautiful someday.

Hey haven’t updated in a awhile. I loved buzzing that hair off. I have never regretted it at all (hope that inspires some others). I grew it out alittle but I loved the short crop (like Jamie Lee Curtis’) so much that I cut it shorter again and have been wearing it like that ever since. Mine is darker gray with white allover in it. I cannot wait till it is more silver!! I’ve been watching for something gentle to use to brighten it up, but alas have not found it yet. I only want to use natural vegetable based organic things so makes it alittle harder. I have been working out and lost 2 sizes so far. Oh, yeah and I got a new vehicle....bright yellow jeep soft top! What I’ve always wanted! Just the perfect accessory for my new hairdo! I will try and take some new pics and upload those with my Liberation Day (Shave it off) pics.
