Goldies’ Story

FROM GLAM MAKEOVER TO GOING BACK

Goldie, pre-Oprah, was happy with her salt-and-pepper hair.

Imagine being happily silver. And then magic happens. You are chosen to be a makeover on Oprah! In you go, not quite knowing what to expect, and out you come – blonde. This is exactly what happened to Goldie. Before we begin her story, a few facts. Goldie, almost 46, is the mother of 8 children. Five are still at home, being homeschooled, and two of the three oldest are married, with children of their own. As she says, “there is never a dull moment around here.” Unlike all the stories so far, Goldie’s begins with gray...

“In November of 2007 I was chosen to be on the Oprah show for a makeover. I was a beautiful salt and pepperhead before my makeover. I used to joke that the only way I would cover my gray is if Oprah told me to. I didn’t realize how prophetic those words would be!

A thrift-store addict, she loved her $1 rhinestone bracelet and her FREE “genetic bargain.”

Growing up, I was the daughter with the dark brown hair. I didn’t mind, except for the constant remarks that my name, “Goldie,” didn’t match my hair color. Aggravating the situation, my older sister is blond. I sometimes felt like wearing a t-shirt that said: "My parents named me Goldie, Get over it!"  Through my teenage years I kept my hair mostly blond, well, with a slight tinge of green (remember Sun-In?). I found my first gray hairs when I was 18. That’s when I entered my "dark phase.”  No shade of brown to black was off limits! Mocha, Sienna, Burnt Umber, you name it, I dyed it!

A wonderful husband and 8 children later, I was tired. Yes, the kids made me tired. Not tired enough not to take care of myself, but streamlining was in order. It was no longer so important to me to cover my gray. A quiet confidence about who I am as a person emerged and through that, a revelation: "WHY BOTHER COVERING UP THE REAL ME!" So began my first journey into the light...light gray, that is. Every thing went on fabulously for several years, until I sent an email to the Oprah show. The subject matter was actually health-related, but they were doing a makeover show, saw my head of "aging" gray hair and called me! (Who says gray hair won’t capture attention?!)

And then a star is born. Following the “dress frumpy” instructions, she emerged a true butterfly. Blonde.

Goldie became reacquainted with a bottle of bleach and a childhood friend who had become a hair stylist.

The whole process was a once in a lifetime moment, to be sure! But, moments are just that...moments. Moments that pass all too quickly and you are left with living with a moment on top of your head! I was BLOND again! If you ever have world class stylists telling you how much "easier" this will be, don’t listen! Their theory was my hair had so much gray that being blond would not show the "roots.” HA, HA, HA! I have been covering those "non-showing" roots every 4 weeks for the past year! Enough already!

Personal choice is a funny thing. My sister, who will always be blond, loved my Oprah color. My husband liked it too. Me, I longed for my "real hair". I was actually sad. It was as if, when they covered my gray, a part of me went into hiding. So now begins my second journey into the "light."

Ed note: And we’ll be watching every step of the way, Goldie.

Now Goldie has her hats at the ready because she’s going back!

Is that the first glimmer of gray we see?

Sure enough, there it is, coming in nicely.

Even at the sides!

Octomom is Octogramma, too. Yes, this is #8.

Now let’s talk hair! Goldie says she’s noticing more white this time around.

Goldie proves there really is less gold in her hair in outside lighting!

Treating herself to a new cut, Goldie expresses every emotion a woman ever felt in “the chair.”

And voila! She likes the glam new look, loves the stylist, and is a very happy camper!

Goldie’s pluckin’ and twangin’ with her new hairdo! And a little more silver!

Guess what these are? Guess where they’re going?

Goldie’s got a great new cut a lots more silver showing. But here’s the real secret: her hair is shaved underneath, all the way around and 1/2 way up her head! She says it eliminates the bulk, and the rest lays down and behaves!

Goldie did it! Went from Oprah blonde to strikingly silver! And notice the new bangs.

Here’s a close-up of the cool new color. Guess we can call her a “Grad” times two!

Goldie,

It sounds like your makeover was really a “madeover”. I don’t know why people feel the need to color over our gray. Why not just give you a great looking hair cut?

Welcome to our group. I think your gray looks better than your blonde any day!

You go girl!!!  Nothing better than being who you are!  cool smile

Posted by graytnw on 02/05 at 08:06 PM

Goldie, You must be so happy to be going back to your own color! You’re making the transition look elegant.

Posted by butterfly_dream on 02/05 at 08:55 PM

It’s a shame the people on the show felt the need to cover your real, beautiful hair. Incidentally, did they really tell you to ‘dress frumpy’ for the before photo? That’s naughty and misleading. I will enjoy watching your transition back to silver.

Posted by Sharon on 02/06 at 01:52 AM

Goldie, I think your gray suits you much better than the blonde-regardless of your name. You are beautiful just the way your are!  cool smile

Posted by kim on 02/06 at 03:34 AM

Great story, sad middle - losing your silver, but the ending will be great again.  You look beautiful in your silver and when you are done you’re hair will be a precious metal just as your name.

Posted by Marisa on 02/06 at 04:55 AM

It’s time Oprah did another show with great silvers.  Diana you could be her expert interviewee.  Honestly though, have you ever been approached by her producers or have you pitched the idea yourself?

Posted by sandpinkshimmer on 02/06 at 05:23 AM

Goldie, thanks for sharing your story ... and most definitely, the silver suits you beautifully.

Posted by RuffDiamond on 02/06 at 05:44 AM

did these people work for MORE magazine??? before they moved onto oprah????
my favorite things to see on these shows are the “make overs” and you know they are always making the “before” look pretty bad...this is the kind of thing that keeps gray hair as public enemy #1 (for women)they always put someone in clothes they are never really going to wear and change the makeup up too...it is fun to see the transformation but it would be even more fun to do a follow up!!!!
LIKE THIS ONE !!!!!
welcome BACK goldie!!! you will have fun with this rowdy group of gals!!! and watch out for bambi ...she will “knock” some sense into anyone who tries to change our minds!!!  cool smirk

Posted by louann on 02/06 at 06:16 AM

Here, here Louann!  Goldie, you’re right do the silver thing...again but my God, the idea of transitionning twice!  You look great as a blonde too but as you said, the maintenance could not have been any fun.  Better to be natural, equally gorgeous, and totally authentic.

Posted by sandpinkshimmer on 02/06 at 06:29 AM

LOL ... hey! I’m a gentle soul ... with a killer right hook!  cool smile

Posted by RuffDiamond on 02/06 at 06:32 AM

Goldie,
Oprah should do a follow up on you. I think women would be interested to see how successful these make-overs really are in the long run.
Welcome back to the silver!

Posted by silvercurl on 02/06 at 06:49 AM

Goldie, Oprah should do a follow up, that would be great. What is it with the shows that tell you to be who you are, true to yourself and then want to change who you are? Welcome, you will love this site and everyone on it. I think you look fab with your natural color. 8 KIDS! You and Elizabeth need to talk.

Posted by sallee on 02/06 at 08:19 AM

Good Morning! (Here, at least, in the Southeastern Washington State)
First, let me begin by saying that I am very excited to meet all of you. Especially now, as I transition (AGAIN!) in this unique situation. When you stick your silver head above the crowd, you sometimes get booed. But, you won’t have the best view if you don’t hold your head high! It is heartwarming to have the support of this great community of silver sisters!

I know that you have a lot of questions about my Oprah makeover and I will be delighted to answer them. My makeover experience was fantastically fun, except that I would have loved to keep my own hair color!

Sharon, to answer your dress frumpy question : We were told to wear our frumpy clothes for before pictures and to bring them with us to Chicago. We had before pictures taken at Harpo before the taping of the show, although they ended up using the picture taken at my home.

I believe that Diana, her book, and this website are trendsetters. I know everyone here does too. I believe that together we can show the world our “true colors” and give them the courage to join the silver revolution.

Now, I have to go teach a class! (aka- My 7 year old needs help with his math!) Thank you, everyone, I will get back with you soon! Goldie “Silver” Ingersoll

Posted by Goldie on 02/06 at 08:22 AM

I love that they said being blonde would be “easier”.  Ha!

Diana, This is a great story.  Thanks for bringing it to us.

Posted by RunnerGal on 02/06 at 08:32 AM

This is one of my favorite stories!!  I too wish they would leave the hair its natural color on the make-over shows.  One of the shows I LOVE to watch is “What Not To Wear” and Nick (hairdresser) always colors away the gray!!  This bothers me the most, although, he always gives fantastic cuts.

Posted by lulubell on 02/06 at 08:41 AM

Thought you guys would like this story.  It isn’t every day someone gets on Oprah. And while I admit, they showed a striking difference, I think it would have been more striking with shining silver hair! Beats me why colorists think they have to change it—sooooo many pretty shades of silver out there!;-)

Posted by Diana Jewell on 02/06 at 08:56 AM

Wow Goldie, i think it would be AWESOME if Oprah could respect your and our natural haircolors! I would also LOVE to see oprahs natural color! I agree totally with you going natural again!!!
Petra.

Posted by catweezle on 02/06 at 09:41 AM

thank you everyone for your support! I have a brief moment (before recess gets over!) to check in!

Lulubell - Stacy London was one of the stylists on my makeover show! My stylist was Lloyd Boston (one of the most delightful men you would ever meet!). Stacy was a hoot! We were all getting make-up done at the same time Stacy was for the show taping! I will right back with a funny story to tell you about Stacy and I! We also shopped with our stylists. I saw a lot of Ms. London even though she wasn’t my personal stylist. Ooo...kid stampede, recess over! I’ll check in again soon!! Goldie

Posted by Goldie on 02/06 at 10:54 AM

So, the roast is cooking in the oven. I have a moment and I might be able type fast enough to tell the Stacy London story before the kids find me!

All the makeover ladies are backstage in the temporary “salon” that was right behind the stage in Harpo Studios. It was incredible and looked like you just walked into a fabulous salon! There are all the makeover ladies (9 of us) dressed in our frumpy wear. It was picture day! I am wearing what came to be known as my “earth mother” outfit! It was a maroon corduroy, drop waist style dress. Ankle length. (I am 5’2") I have on the shoes my husband calls “minnie mouse” shoes. They are red mary janes with a very STURDY heel. Okay, they are more like a tire tread! I admit, not my best look. In breezes Ms. London. She looks like a million bucks! She is wearing a flowy knit, navy dress and red stilletos to die for! She is lovely! There we were, looking like thrift store castaways! (Wait, my outfit was from the thrift store...oh, well that’s another story!) Stacy begins giving us some fashion tips. Then she starts talking about how to finish a fashion “look” with a pair of really great red shoes. I walked up to her and put my big old red clodhoppers next to her delicate stilletos. I say, “I agree, red shoes do finish a “look”! She replied, “NOT the kind of look we are going for!” She was delightful! Always approachable and of course, a terrific sense of humor. Goldie

This is a great story!  Hi Goldie!  Welcome to the group!  I absolutely love the first pic of you with the ultra-chic, classic bob.  It looks beautiful on you ... especially in silver!  I do think they made you look great on Oprah ... if only they could have done so and kept the beautiful color you already had!  It’s another example of the majority thinking gray = old!  Well, we know it’s not true and things are really changing.  The more I look around, the more women I see going back to natural!  Thanks for sharing your story and I can’t wait to see you in silver again!

Funny, but just a day or two ago I was asking Diana when she was going to be on Oprah!! smile

Posted by grayincali on 02/06 at 05:00 PM

Goldie, just a quick question.  In many of the What Not To Wear episodes it appears that Stacey London has a silver streak in her very dark hair, did she have it when you met her??  I have often wondered if it was natural or intentional only because in some episodes I don’t notice it. I have known two women in my circle of friends who did have a natural silver streak in their hair.  One of them had it when we were just in grade school!  question

Posted by lulubell on 02/06 at 05:09 PM

Thank you grayincali for saying I look good in both pics! I am sooooo excited to be going silver again. I am still formulating how to make the transition. I’m patient, but I love drama! Stay tuned…

lulubell - Ms. London was a solid dark brown (perhaps a few caramel highlights) when I met her. She would make a striking silver haired woman too!

Please be patient with me as I learn to navigate this blogging thing. It is new to me. So, if I left anyone out, please let me know! Goldie

Posted by Goldie on 02/06 at 06:16 PM

Welcome Goldie!  I too enjoy watching What Not To Wear - I too wish that when it gets to the hair part of the show that they would work with someones gray hair instead of covering it up.  I think that it would be an example that as we get older we can embrace who we are - that we can stay healthy and “young” as we get older.

Posted by grayme on 02/07 at 07:25 AM

Thank you, grayme!

I believe Diana, her book, and this website is the catalyst for a new way of viewing gray! Momentum is building. It’s time for a silver revolution (cue Beatles “Revolution” song!)
Sorry! I tend to get a little passionate about this subject!

Every movement has to start somewhere. We are fortunate to have Diana that has broke through some barriers for us already! Who knows what we will be able to accomplish?!

Goldie

Posted by Goldie on 02/07 at 08:34 AM

Yeah!! And, Goldie, don’t know if you’ve cruised everywhere yet, being the new girl on the block, but if you go to Great Inspirations under this same tab, you’ll see what a LOT of great grays have accomplished! All of these women, and all of us, are truly leading the way.

Posted by Diana Jewell on 02/07 at 08:46 AM

The Great Inspirations section of this website packs a powerful punch!

Emmylou Harris has been an inspiration to be since I was in my teens. It is because of her music that I began writing songs and playing the guitar. I listen to her music when I am on my treadmill everyday! She has a quote that influences my writing “It takes a certain amount of courage to let the field lie fallow until you have something to say.”

Ladies, we have something to say!!!

I find it serendipitous that Ms. Harris is fabulously silver! She also said, “My voice has a depth to it now from wear and tear, like a woman’s face: It gets wrinkled and older, but there’s a beauty to that.” She began going gray at 17. She says, “No one can turn back the clock, you need to find a way to look really good at the age you are.”

Well put, Emmylou!! I believe we are doing just that!!!

Goldie

Posted by Goldie on 02/07 at 09:06 AM

Thanks for sharing your story, Goldie. :o) I’m glad you’re leaving the gold and heading back to silver.

I enjoyed the quotes by Emmylou. I’ve never listened to her music but you’ve peeked my interest in her words of wisdom.

Hi, greeneyes!

Thank you for sharing your story! May I say, not only is your hair lovely, but, your face and bone structure are stunning!

We are a very eclectic group of musicians around my house. As you travel through the rooms you will hear anything from Beethoven to bluegrass!

Goldie

Posted by Goldie on 02/07 at 10:55 AM

Thanks for your nice compliments.

How wonderful it must be to hear music throughout the house! I play piano. I couldn’t convince my daughter to stick with playing an instrument, but my son plays guitar and I have so loved hearing him play throughout the years. He’s played some classical, blues, country and modern worship music in a church youth band. By the way, I homeschooled my 2 the entire way, so I perked up when I read you homeschool. I have the utmost respect for a homeschool mom, especially when she’s homeschooling more than 2. :o)

Posted by greeneyes on 02/07 at 12:14 PM

My husband is a music teacher! So, music is a big part of our homeschool curriculum!

Good for you on homeschooling your 2 all the way! How nice that now you can spend some time now pursuing your passions!

I look forward to hearing about YOUR writing getting published!

Your gray was beautiful!  I’m striving to get my hair that length.  I was so surprised that they told you the blonde wouldn’t be any trouble with your gray roots.  Having lightened my hair to blonde hoping for the same “no problem” result, I soon learned unless you let the gray take its course any color needs constant maintenance.  Three cheers for you for returning to your natural beautiful self.  SandyGee

Posted by sandygee on 02/07 at 07:07 PM

Thank you! Ah...to be done with transition. Yup! They said it would be easier...Nope...it hasn’t!

How long is your hair now? The classic bob is one of my favorite cuts. I am contemplating other styles for this transition. I’m not sure what I will do yet. All I know is that I have PLENTY of time to think about it!!

This time, I have new friends to help ease the wait along the way!

Goldie

Posted by Goldie on 02/07 at 07:46 PM

My photo is on the Great Grays Gallery, (Sandra G.) It is a current photo. In March 2007 I cut my hair to about an inch to get the blonde/brown shade off. I sent that photo to Diana, too.  I don’t know if it will show up anywhere - I think it was too blurry.  At the time I cut it all off my hair was about shoulder length.

And yes, it is great to have these new friends to encourage and support us - even at times when we (I) think of coloring again. Egads did I really say that!  SandyGee

Posted by sandygee on 02/08 at 10:28 AM

Goldie you did look amazing in your Opera photo, but you looked equally amazing in your original photo too. That is what is crazy about this anti gray mentality that goes on...we can look just as great with gray hair...it’s not just about gray hair...it’s about how we treat the rest of our body and then the true confidence in who we really are will always shine through and no bottle of dye can do that.  I loved those quotes also from Emmylou. I am glad you shared those also.  That is what I love about this site...we can strengthen and encourage each other smile
Grayme I loved what you said about being an example of embracing who we are. I have a feeling that my daughter will follow in my footsteps...going gray early..and I really do want to be an example to her that gray doesn’t mean old tired and frail..again you guys are so great.

Oh, sandygee! Your hair is an amazing color! I am hoping that I have more white this go around! Regardless, it will be wonderful to be back to silver!

Goldie

Posted by Goldie on 02/08 at 06:35 PM

Thank you celticme!

I just returned from my Mother’s 72nd birthday party.

Several things struck me. First, although I always admire my mother’s beautiful, white hair, today I told her I was envious of it!! She said, and I quote: “That was one of the best presents I have had in years!!” While I was delighted my Mom was so pleased about what I said, I felt a twinge of sadness that she doesn’t hear it more often.

Secondly, I remembered another catalyst to my first silver hair reckoning. It was at a family reunion on my Mom’s side of the family. Nearly all of my maternal relatives have glorious, full heads of white hair!!

Of particular note was my Great Aunt Thankful. (Yes, her name really was Thankful.) She was a tall stately woman, with snow white hair pulled neatly up in a classic bun. She drew you in with her charm, a soft smile and a keen wit. I never thought of her as “old”, even though, in years, she was. She was kind and generous and in her presence I felt special. Aunt Thankful made everyone feel that way.

I tell my daughters about her. I also tell them that it wasn’t that her hair was blond, brown, black or white. It was her goodness on the inside and her love she gave freely that made her neither “old” or “young”. It made her a true beauty!

So, for now I am surrounding myself in wonderful memories of my family, new friends, and trying to be neither “old” or “young”, just who I am right now.

Goldie

Posted by Goldie on 02/08 at 07:12 PM

I love the way you think Goldie!  I am so with you on not worrying about old or young.  It’s all about being the best you can be right here, right now.  I couldn’t agree more that true beauty comes from within!  Really, your words said it perfectly!

Posted by grayincali on 02/08 at 09:03 PM

Hi Goldie ,
I loved your story. I’m new to this site and I find myself going to it daily to read all the stories of you wonderful women. I have been gray for many years and don’t know if I have pictures from before when I colored my hair every shade in the book. I have worn mine short most my life and have just started growing it long.
My transition from dark brown to gray was easier when I cut my hair 1 inch all around. By then the gray was there and my transition began.
Its funny how my family and friends wanted me to color it back. I think it was more their insecurities about growing old.
. Now after all these years everyone loves it and I feel years younger. Why - it’s the attitude and not being afraid to be who I am. I’m 53 and teach High School Students who think I’m in my late 30’s gray hair and all.
Thanks for your story
Betty from the North

Betty, we are the same age ... and I couldn’t agree with you more about attitude. Most of the men I teach hand-to-hand combat to, are men in their late 20’s to late 30’s, and when the question of age comes up, they always say “we just can’t think of you as a 50-something ... it just doesn’t add up”

Do I love that, or what !!!!  cheese

Posted by RuffDiamond on 02/09 at 07:57 AM

Attitude is so much of everything we do in life. A lot of people are afraid of change whether it involves them or someone they know. It’s a scary thing to change something familiar to something unknown. I’m a little behind so welcome Betty. I cut my hair really short too when I decided to go natural. I’d also been a LOT of different colors and I have to say, Mother Nature knows best.

Bambi, you gotta love those comments. They prove attitude has a lot to do with how people perceive you.

Goldie, I agree with Suzanne, you said it beautifully. You can’t change the past and worrying about what might happen is a waste of energy. So live in the moment and make the best of the gift of each day we’re given.

Welcome Betty!

I would love to see your picture! Have you sent any in?

My husband is a teacher also. The comments from the students are usually painfully honest. It is so fantastic to get compliments from such a “tough audience”! I love it that you are natural role model for our youth! In a culture that can seem very “plastic” it is important to see “real” people loving life!

Can’t wait to hear more from you!

Dear MsMika,

Thank you! I went out and saw your new cut- love it!!

I saw you just turned 40- Happy Birthday to you.....
My mom-in-law always says she didn’t feel like she was a grown-up yet until she hit 40! She hasn’t stopped or looked back since!

I haven’t decided my course of action for transition yet. But, I will tell you this: I am not embarrassed or ashamed of grow out. I follow the advice I give my children: When you get negative comments, ask yourself, “Do these words have merit?” Most of the time, the answer is no!

I am using this transition time as a personal soapbox for those who ask what I am doing! I take care of myself and try to stay fashionable so people wonder and ask about my grow out. Being fashionable and grow out don’t seem to mesh to them. I see it as an opportunity to teach.

As for Oprah, I think there is a bigger picture than me. It is this silver revolution that is happening all around us. We are ahead of curve. Diana, her book, this website, and ALL of us - now that would make for a great Oprah show!!

Goldie

Posted by Goldie on 02/15 at 07:35 AM

Hi Goldie -

I just found this section today and don’t really have time to read all the way through - so if I comment on something that has already been answered - I apologize.

I love watching the make-overs on Oprah too, but I think one of the things that I hear Oprah say over and over again it’s being your authentic self.

Giving up the hair dye again is being your authentic self. It’s how YOU feel the most comfortable and I’m impressed that even after the make over you are letting it go back - good for you!

I think it would be GREAT if Oprah did a follow up on you with Diana on the show as well.  It would be a great way for her to confirm that being your authentic self is the most important thing to do and be.  Even after a make over that made you feel and look good initially - being yourself is far more important that the bottle of dye that makes you look better for a moment. ** I’m certainly not implying that you still don’t look good - because I think you do!  But I think you know what I mean...don’t you - or did I just stick my foot in my mouth?

Diana could share her wonderful book and hopefully talk about this wonderful website where woman around the world find commonality among others that are going through the transition period together.

The best thing about this site is the support.  You often don’t find it around you - people are hesitant to ask you what you are doing or to make comments.  But here - it’s nothing but support.

Now Diana - I wouldn’t want to do anything over your head - but what if we all wrote Oprah and asked to see you on the show? What if we all wrote and expressed how we are happy being our authentic selves - and that means NO DYE! And we’re happy with that decision?  That gray is a color - that we are mighty and happy and gray and looking great?  OK getting off soap box now tongue laugh

Hi Goldie,
I seen that in one of your texts that you live in Waitsburg. I live in the Tri-Cities. Small world, huh?
Gerri

Posted by Gerri on 02/19 at 10:50 PM

Yea!!! Someone in my neck of the woods!! I grew up in Benton City, my older sister lives in Kennewick and works for EMSL at Battelle. Almost all of my husbands family live in the Tri-Cities too!

Are you new to the area? Or have you been here awhile?

Goldie

Posted by Goldie on 02/20 at 07:01 AM

Hi Goldie,
No, I’ve lived here for about 26 yrs. I just had to add it up and it’s hard to believe I’ve been here this long.
I came from a small town so when I came down here at 18 I didn’t think I could make it. Obviously I did!

smile Dear Goldie, What a treat to find a “SILVER THREAD” for my new Silver Sisters of the Northwest!  I live in Longview, WA.  I would like to meet Sisters in Portland, Oregon or Seattle, Wa, or anywhere in between! I am Silver near Seattle.  I have always embraced my silver hair. It is God’s way of softening the sisters features. This is my first comment, but not my last!  My Motto: I will Bloom where ever I am Planted!!  Let me know your hair care! I need to brighten the silver.  Thanks, Patty Brady (Bunch)

Hi Goldie and Silver

I’m waving at you from up north, on Whidbey Island. Looks like we have our own little Silver Sisters group here in WA state, with both sides of the Cascades covered- what fun! I seem to remember a few more on this site too.

Goldie, your gray hair is so pretty. Oprah messed up.

Posted by Medusa on 02/20 at 10:08 PM

Don’t keep us all sleepless in Seattle! If one of you great Northwest gals wants to be team leader to organize this, let me know, and I’ll put up a License Plate in the Silver Sisters Events section. Hey, where’s Dena (graytNW)?  Once the plate goes up, you’ll attract even more—and that’s when you can all start PM-ing and making your plans.  Let’s DO this thing! cheese

Posted by Diana Jewell on 02/20 at 10:54 PM

Holy Hairpiece Batman! (Sorry, Adam West is from Walla Walla. We quote him alot around here!)

You gals have been comin’ out of the woods or sagebrush or wheat field here in Washington! (Depends on which side of the state you’re on.)

Thank you one and all for your comments. Do I detect a silver revolution happening right here in our fantastic state?

Pray tell, Diana, what exactly does a team leader do? (Not that I’m interested or anything! Hee, Hee!)

Goldie

Posted by Goldie on 02/21 at 07:52 AM

A team leader is simply the “go to” person. She’s the name I put up there with the license plate, because it’s good to have one key contact. It helps if she is in the Members Album because it’s the easiest way for people to click on her link, then PM everybody involved in the meet by cc-ing them. You may want to share your personal emails with everybody during this process, but that’s up to you. And that should be done only through PMs.

But everyone DOES get involved.  People throw out their own suggestions of a good place, a good date, you all chat amongst yourselves via PMs. It’s best not to post details of when and where on the internet. Anyway, you all decide, and divvy up what you want to do—someone may call the facility or restaurant you select, someone else may decide to plan car pools. The way you do this is up to you. A team leader just sort of corrals it, and keeps me informed.

As your big date approaches, I send the GGLG baseball caps off to the team leader. After the event, everyone should write me a little email about what went on and send in the pictures they took individually, so I can do a story on it!

Posted by Diana Jewell on 02/21 at 08:24 AM

Hey,
I am just N. of Seattle in a little waterfront haven called Edmonds.  I’d love to get together with y’all but have too much on my plate right now to take on leadership role.  Not to say I wouldn’t help out with planning.  I think it would be grand to get together.

Posted by MsMika on 02/21 at 08:57 AM

OK—I count 4, and if graytNW would chime in here, that would be 5! Maybe there’s more. Sounds like a party to me. Now, if someone would volunteer to be team leader, away we go! cheese

Posted by Diana Jewell on 02/21 at 09:03 AM

grin Hello from the Evergreen State!  This is Silver near Seattle!  Who wants to get-together in Seattle at the Pike’s Market for lunch?  Please let me know what it takes to start up a Chapter!  Just a little background, I am from Southern California and now retired in Longview, Wa. I live in a Cape Cod Cottage old house!  Just like me, the house is not getting older, but Better!!  I envision us in Navy and white uniforms, nautical attire?  I see us in a Kaminsky type straw hat with a red heart on the hat! Any thoughts? Let me know how your schedules are going! Let’s get together soon!  Best to all!  Silver near Seattle

Posted by Silver near Seattle on 02/21 at 12:52 PM

I’m all for a seattle meet up!  Can’t say I’ll be in Navy, but Pike Place is one of my favorite places.  I just celebrated my 40th birthday there!

Posted by MsMika on 02/22 at 08:38 PM

Hi there, sorry to disappear. I’m back now for one day anyway. Pike Place Market would be perfect! MsMika we could even carpool or take the train in together; we’re almost neighbors!

Posted by Medusa on 02/23 at 12:08 PM

Pike Place sounds great!!! I’ve been so busy I almost missed out on this one!  cool smile

Posted by graytnw on 02/23 at 12:44 PM

While this seems to be moving along nicely, we are always looking out for the security and safety of our Members. I hope you will keep the date and the time in confidence via PM’s. As I’ve said many times, it is not the wisest strategy to post plans on the internet, and all other groups have chatted amongst themselves through PM’s or emails while the event was in the planning stages. The event is still missing a team leader, so it does not have a license plate on the Silver Sisters Events Page. We need you to cooperate with these few simple rules of this website, so you can get your caps and have your story reported. Many thanks!

Posted by Diana Jewell on 02/23 at 01:08 PM

Oh sorry about that, I think we were all so happy to find neighboring Sisters!

Does the team leader have to do a whole lot of stuff? Sounds like we have full plates in our lives but maybe several could share the duties so we can make this even happen.

Posted by Medusa on 02/24 at 10:59 AM

Hi Medusa,

After two events serving as the team leader here in SoCal I can safely say that there really isn’t much work or time involved in serving in the position.  The team leader doesn’t have to come up with the where because her Silver Sisters are full of ideas – she can contribute ideas too, but it’s not required.  She serves as a “clearing house.” She is to whom new members send messages indicating interest in receiving information about upcoming local events.  She also sends out Personal Messages (GGLG’s way of communicating among members without posting to the world) helping nail down an event’s details – who, what, when and where.  It takes only a few minutes of time and really only when there is an event coming up.  My fellow SoCalGals have made reservations at restaurants for us and figured out logistics when an event is in their neck of the woods—it does become a team effort, but one person has to keep track of the details.  Because our group is comparative large, I keep a list of contact info about who has attended events and who wants to be notified when they are coming up.  Nothing fancy, just a list that isn’t shared publicly to protect the privacy of GGLG members.  I promise you that this is not like the school parent association, where once you volunteer, a deluge descends.  It’s easy, and I think my fellow team leaders across the country will agree, not time consuming.  Plan and hold your event.  You will all be glad that you did.  We here in SoCal have already begun talking about our next event which will be held after the big convo in NYC.  Say, who else is planning to attend Oz’s big do in the Big Apple this June?

Posted by SoCalSilver on 02/24 at 01:02 PM

I was just about to post—see my comments on what a team leader does-- just above, posted 2/21. But SoCalSilver has kind of summed it up perfectly.  And she knows, because she’s been there, done that! wink

Posted by Diana Jewell on 02/24 at 01:24 PM

Thanks Diana and SoCalSilver!

It doesn’t sound too hard. Yes I was afraid it would be time-consuming. And we get those cool baseball hats too?

What do you guys think?

I’ve got the Big Apple penciled in. Looking forward to hearing more!

Posted by Medusa on 02/24 at 01:53 PM

Oh, you will hear more, Medusa—very soon! It’s getting truly exciting.

So—does this mean you’re volunteering for team leader for Seattle??  Do let me know.  If so, please get your pic into the Member’s Album to make it easy for everyone to PM you!

Posted by Diana Jewell on 02/24 at 02:18 PM

Hi Goldie,

Just wanted to drop you a line to say hi and congrats on deciding to return to your authentic roots!  Yay!!

I wholeheartedly agree with SBKaren who mentioned that Oprah always wants us to be our authentic selves, but those makeover teams always dye over the gray hair!!  It’s a big contradiction!

Oprah should be celebrating this website and all of us trailblazers on a future makeover show.  Give us a cute new hair style that shows off the gray, makeup tips, and some trendy clothes but leave the platinum tresses alone!

Now that really would be “reality TV”!! Sign me up!!  grin

Holly

Posted by Graydiva on 02/24 at 04:27 PM

Ok, I just sent an email to Oprah too!  Maybe if enough of us write in, she just might do a show about us!!

Holly

Hello, everyone!

Sorry, I haven’t been “here” lately! The kids have been fighting a yucky bug of some kind! I am working hard not to get it too!

I hope the Seattle Silvers have things coming together for them!!

Graydiva - Loved your story too! Yes, we ALL need to send an email to the Lady O’! It would be a fabulous show to do! It would be a show who’s time has come!!!

In the meantime, the NYC event is really a show that is happening!! I just hope that we can swing it here at my house, so I can attend!!

Goldie

Posted by Goldie on 02/25 at 08:16 AM

Lady “O” has heard from me....we need to put this posting in other sections so members get the update....Write Oprah - let’s be heard!!!!!

Posted by SBKaren on 02/25 at 02:29 PM

I agree!!! I think the pressure to appear so youthful for mass media is just so great for really high profile people. But look at how beautiful Oprah’s mentor Maya Angelo is.

But in all fairness I can imagine how truly hard it would be for Oprah to go gray. Can you even imagine how the tabloids would hound her as they have on her weight????

But it would be oh-so-uber-cool if she did a show on ladies decisions to go gray and their transistions and other people’s reactions to their decision. You could easily fill an hour show on that!

Posted by Shernobyl on 02/25 at 04:29 PM

Hmmm… maybe Oprah’s cameras should be rolling as we introduce to the world our “silver revolution” in NYC? I’ll have “my people” call “her people”! Hee, hee!

Goldie

Posted by Goldie on 02/25 at 04:44 PM

So I just left a letter on Oprah’s site. I think it had something to do with asking style or fashion questions.

I believe so many don’t even know this is a cool option so I mentioned how much I love the support and ladies on this site and how this site isn’t militant or judgemental but helps ladies open to the possibility understand that going gray doesn’t mean retiring to rocking chairs and channeling Granny Clampett’s spirit!

I’m with you Goldie and SBKaren...the more of us that writes to Oprah, the better. I really would like for her to do a show on all of the mental and spiritual and family and work and yes, even fashion issues that come up in this decision.

And I also touted this amazing website as the roadmap to address all of these issues.

Lets all write Oprah!

Posted by Shernobyl on 02/25 at 05:37 PM

Well said, Shernobyl!! I think Diana needs her own talk show!

Goldie

Posted by Goldie on 02/25 at 06:24 PM

I just can’t even imagine what they were saying to you as they colored your hair, Goldie. As dynamic as that “after” photo is of you...I can’t help but see you (in my mind’s eye)with that same confident smile in those fab clothes but with that chic hairdo in your own lovely shades of silver and salt and pepper! Sheesh.....those makeover people just didn’t know when to stop. But I guess they wanted to do a true “makeover” in every sense of the word. *sigh*

I agree about Diana having her own show!I think that’s what I’ve always admired about this site and her book is that she acknowleges that making this decision may not be for everyone. But I never have felt any judgement when that idea is put forth. But if anyone does decide to try it, every aspect of that decision is addressed here. Care for your hair, care for your soul, colors for your makeup and dealing with genuine or not so genuine friends and family. I LOVE IT ALL!!!

grin Silver near Seattle checking in with the Silver Seattle gals!  Goldie, I just e-mailed Oprah and Dr.Maya in regards to doing a Embrace the Silver and be your authentic self program.  Hosted by Diana Jewell and with all of us as her cheering team! We all are walking inspirations of what authentic selves look like!  Any thoughts?  Silver near Seattle

Posted by Silver near Seattle on 02/26 at 08:19 PM

Yea, Silver near Seattle! We need all the voices we can! (Is Dr. Maya (Angelou?)

I see you are from Longview. So you are a state “fence rider” like we are here in SE Washington. So close to Oregon you can almost see it!

At the moment, I need to get my hubby off to work, so I’ll check back later!!

Goldie

Posted by Goldie on 02/27 at 07:08 AM

grin Yes, Maya is Angelou!  I am really not on a first name basis with these people who did not realize what a mistake to color that beautiful hair of yours! They really do not get-it!  Oprah and Gayle King would be awesome as silver in the windy city!  Fence rider, for sure! I am a couple of miles from Rainier, OR, just over the Lewis and Clark bridge. Are you fairly near to me?  Hope the kiddos feel better and try to stay well, my dear! Silver near Seattle

Posted by Silver near Seattle on 02/27 at 08:04 AM

Thanks, Silver near Seattle!
Well, they need the makeovers to be as “dramatic” as possible for TV. I just know in my heart that showing women that it really is a beautiful option not to cover their silver would resonate profoundly!

So, the next option is to become such a large number of silvers, they can’t ignore us! Which is why we all need to go to NYC in June!!!

Goldie

P.S. I am completely on the other side of the state. Right in the corner of OR, WA, and Idaho!

Posted by Goldie on 02/27 at 08:23 AM

Ok, all you Evergreen gals who want to meet up—you’re official! Go check out the Silver Sisters Event page. We have a team leader who is in the Members Album, which makes getting those PMs going really easy.  Just go find Goldie, click on the link to her bio, and when you get to her page, click the PM button!

Copy all the other gals who have shown interest, too. Just add their posting names to the list of people receiving your PM. Soon, PMs will be flying back and forth as you firm up your plans!

And, who knows? WIth your “do” up on the SIlver Sisters events page, you may hear from people you didn’t even expect!  Have a great meet!

Posted by Diana Jewell on 03/02 at 05:25 AM

wink Goldie, I am front and center to get this Silver Sisters event a journey to remember!  Let me know what I can do to make these meetings a reality.  I am hear for you, my dear!  Silver near Seattle p.s. I did a PM to you also!!

Hi Goldie, we must be kindred spitits.  I am also a homeschooling mom of 8, although all of my children are still at home.  I’m new to the site and to the prospect of going natural.  I guess that makes me a newbie!  I was inspired by your determination to grow it out again especially after being nationally acclaimed on Oprah.  Thanks for the encouragement you offer.

Posted by denzec on 03/10 at 06:27 AM

Welcome denzec! Thank you for the kind words! You will find nothing but support and encouragement from everyone here!

For me personally, going back to silver is like coming home. It just feels right. People around me have a more difficult time, for whatever reason. That’s okay. I have to be true to myself or I can’t be authentic for anyone else.

So, hang your hat here and let us watch your transition right before our eyes! You’ll be glad you did!

Hi Washington sisters!

Sorry to disappear; my Dad broke his hip and I’ve been flying down to help my folks out, with no chance to do more than quickly pop in. Sounds like a lot of fun doings- please count me in!

Hi Goldie

Thank you for your kind words. He is in the hospital doing OK but has lots of physical therapy ahead. I’ll be going back and forth helping him and Mom out; we’re fortunate to be a big family so we can take turns.

So glad I haven’t missed any fun doings. Thanks for taking on the team leader position. I’m very happy to help out in any way I can!

Somewhere in the distance, my hairdresser drops her scissors in defeat. She senses a terrible disturbance in the force...Goldie has taken the scissors to her own hair!!!

Call it spring fever or just utter annoyance at the hair hanging over my ears like two fluffy mudflaps, they had to go!! Vidal Sassoon will not be calling me anytime in the near future to hire me as a stylist, but, it’s not half bad! I’ll let you know about the other half tomorrow!!

Posted by Goldie on 03/20 at 09:33 AM

Goldie—You’re so funny.  I cut my own bangs yesterday and then promptly gave the scissors to my husband and told him not to give them back to me under any circumstances.  I now a have what I would call village idiot bangs.  My hairdresser is going to kill me when I see her on the 31st.  Funny, I think I care more about her reaction than anything else.  Hairdressers wield some kind of magical power over me, I swear!

Posted by sandpinkshimmer on 03/20 at 09:41 AM

Goldie - I think it IS spring fever .... self-hair-mutilating seems to be rampant among my friends grin

I’m on the other side of the fence ... I keep cancelling hair appointments, because after my pixie, the silver came in like highlights, and I’m ready to go for length again.

So I’m wearing a very shaggy pixie cheese

Posted by RuffDiamond on 03/20 at 09:48 AM

Oooo...if only my hubby would give two thumbs up for a pixie! The only way he would do that is if I won some kind of a makeover, out of town, where I couldn’t see him cry as they cut my hair! (hee, hee!) So, if I am able to swing the NYC event I will splurge for a pixie do’ somewhere!

Yup, it’s spring fever! I am now washing curtains and anything else in site (my children are hiding!!)!

Sandpinkshimmer, I know what you mean about the bangs- my hubby calls it “The Three Stooges” look! (I think I am Moe!) I use a texture cream to get them to separate! It helps, I think!

I’ll be sending pics soon. My daughter-in-law/photographer’s baby shower is on Sunday. I’ll have her do some then!

Happy 1st Day of Spring, everyone!!

Posted by Goldie on 03/20 at 10:04 AM

Goldie ~ Can’t wait to see pictures of your new ‘do’ AND the new grandbaby.  Congratulation.  When is he/she due?

Posted by SSaS on 03/20 at 11:06 AM

Thank you! Grandbaby #8 is a boy. Landon Tucker is due to arrive sometime the first couple weeks of April. We are thrilled, especially because our 2nd oldest son and daughter-in-law and their brood (6 of our grandchildren) just moved to England! Waaaaaa!! He is a photojournalist in the Airforce and they will be in England for 3 years! We are saving, saving, saving for a trip to see them in a couple years! In the meantime, we will have to be satisfied with just having 2 grandchildren around. We LOVE a full house!!!

Posted by Goldie on 03/20 at 11:13 AM

I am enjoying the hair stories, Goldie and Sandpinkshimmer. The reason I’m growing out my bangs right now is due to my last personal bang trim. (Another case of Village Idiot Bangs, I suppose!)I usually do fine, but the last time was a doozy. I get a trim next week, and since my hair has grown a bit, my stylist will never know how bad the deed truly was. I’m with you, Goldie - plenty of product really helped get me through until they grew some.

Congratulations and best wishes on the arrival of Landon, Goldie. And how exciting to be planning a trip to see your other kids and grandkids in England! I tell my husband if we would have had more children, our home would not be so quiet now. :o)

Posted by greeneyes on 03/20 at 01:43 PM

Wow, it must be in the air, because today I just let my bangs dry by themselves and when they do that, it parts to the side and I thought, hmm, maybe I’ll grow them out so I can just stick them behind my ears and maybe I would have to fight the cowlicks anymore. I cut my own bangs ONCE.

Goldie, congrats on the new wee one.  Please do send pictures and I’m still hoping to get to England one of these days. Gotta go to New York, first. wink How’s that garage sale shaping up?

For the first day of Spring here in “sunny” California, we’ve seen the sun for maybe 10 minutes so far.

Posted by sallee on 03/20 at 01:58 PM

Ahhh the bangs dilemma.  Mine are just about completely grown out - again - and I go through periods of - I need more height on the top of my head - so cut and layer them - to they are more cooperative when they are longer and hang flat and I can tuck behind my ear.

What to do - it’s always what to do!

Happy First Spring from an un-sunny southern California. If this is the beginning of our May Gray/June Gloom in March, it’s going to be a very long depressing spring!  I need sun!!!

Posted by SBKaren on 03/20 at 02:08 PM

"Big Bang Theory #2” - A cosmic shift in the shape of your face occurs when you cut your bangs without the supervision of a force who has gone to beauty school!! (hee, hee)

Greeneyes, there are moments when I want to hide in my closet for some “alone time”. My kids would find me though, they know all my hiding spots!

Hoo, yea - sallee, I am soooo familiar with cowlicks! I got 4 (yes, 4) on the back of my head! All I can say is that I RARELY look at what goes on back there! I just imagine that it’s good (wishful thinking!) and call it a day!! (hee, hee)

So far, we are selling a couple of appliances that we bought for a rental that we no longer use. I ventured down into the “bowels of the earth” (aka- our basement!) and am rumaging up some good stuff!! Along with a lemonade stand and bake sale I may just make it!!!!

Posted by Goldie on 03/20 at 02:14 PM

Goldie, we want photos!! LOL  wink I am not courageous enough to try my scissor skills although these wings and horns are daring me!!  I am still in Florida which means I will just have to deal with them.  I trust only one stylist right now and she is in Canada!  I too am juggling things around in order to make New York work for me.  We have some major home renovations awaiting us when we get home in Mid April so I am looking under couch cushions for loose change LOL to help fund this adventure of a lifetime.  I am supposed to be in Quebec that week but have managed to schedule an alternate week to go.  Now about that garage sale............. cheese

Posted by lulubell on 03/20 at 02:45 PM

Lulubell--I didn’t realize until just now when I checked the Members Album that you live in Ontario.  I’m so excited!  I immigrated to North Carolina from Toronto two and a half years ago although I’m still going through the red tape (onerous since 9/11).  You’ve mentionned Canadian destinations a few times so I had to look and see where you were from.  Funny, I always thought you were a California chick.  Do you have family in Quebec?  I am originally from Montreal.  Gee maybe we can have a mini-meet sometime when I’m visiting the kin....I know we have at least one other GGLG member in London, ON.  --Jo-Anne

I just realized I should have posted the last comment somewhere else or privately.  Sorry Goldie!

Posted by sandpinkshimmer on 03/20 at 03:26 PM

big surprise Goldie, I must add to the Bang mayhem!  I too, took matters into my own hands! My bangs are now cut on a angle and I look in the mirror and see myself as 5 years old AGAIN!!  Lesson to be learned!  Cutting your own bangs is the worst idea since the Madonna (Pointed Bra)! Need I say more????  My motto: Self image is not the same as self worth!  Goldie, congrats on the #8 Landon and how are our Pike’s Market plans?  Silver near Seattle ( at a angle) Patty

Posted by Silver near Seattle on 03/20 at 05:31 PM

There’s one photo collection on this website I don’t want to see--transitioning GGLG-ers who have mutilated their bangs!  (With all due respect Silver Near Seattle, I’d be the unfortunate star of that montage....yipes).  It’s not bad enough that we have multi-chromatic hair.  Now we look like little kids that got hold of mommy’s scissors.  Deep breaths.....this too shall pass, it’s only hair, it’ll grow....

Posted by sandpinkshimmer on 03/21 at 06:34 AM

LOL Don’t worry, sandpinkshimmer, you won’t see that photo grouping. But I think it’s something we’ve all done at one time or another. And learned our lesson!

Posted by Diana Jewell on 03/21 at 07:59 AM

sandpinkshimmer, I have to laugh, remembering one time when my daughter, at about age 4, took the shears to her head. Her hair is dark brown, and we had a black cat at the time. To hide her deed from me, she put the cut hair in the little clumps around the floor to make it look like the cat’s hair!  LOL Unfortunately, she couldn’t hide the missing chunks of hair on her head. Oh man, I was laughing so hard that day I had to lie down. She and I still laugh about it.

So, no matter what yours is like right now, it’s got to look better than hers did that day.

I think it’s great that you guys don’t fear the shears. Go for it!

Posted by butterfly_dream on 03/21 at 08:45 AM

Funny story butterfly_dream!  Brings back memories....when my brother was a toddler, he was enamoured of our family doctor (who had the Friar Tuck kind of balding) and even wanted to be a doctor for many years.  He took the scissors and tried to cut all the hair from the top of his head to emulate his hero.  When that eventually grew back, he took to wearing a bowl on his head to give himself the chrome dome look.  There is definitely something about cutting hair and little kids.  I know that I gave ‘trims’ to many of my dolls (like what, it was going to grow back?).  At our age though, we should be leaving the hair cutting job to those who have trained for it.

Posted by sandpinkshimmer on 03/21 at 12:35 PM

LOL! Too funny, sandpinkshimmer.  LOL

What a fantastic looking Octogramma you are! And a gorgeous, contented little bub in your very capable arms...(do you have eight arms too...? I bet you could use them!) Take care.

Posted by Christie on 04/29 at 02:23 AM

Love the hair! Love the pose and love the little precious bundle. That made my day, Goldie!

Posted by silvercurl on 04/29 at 04:48 AM

You look more like you could be the mom instead of the grandmom!  (and no, I’m not just saying that.) I love the cut you have.  My husband says he can handle to two tones in my hair as long as I don’t go short.  I wonder if he would consider your cut too short...eventhough it’s not much shorter than mine.  Anyhow, congratulations to you and your family.  Looking forward to seeing more pics and more of that white you see.

Posted by denzec on 04/29 at 05:00 AM

Thanks for the update, Goldie! Very sweet grandbaby and I also like your cute cut. How exciting for more white this time!

Posted by greeneyes on 04/29 at 06:07 AM

Hee,hee! Christie, I am giggling at your “contented bub” comment. I was holding his pacifier in his mouth- he’s about ready to let out a huge, red-faced holler! At which point, I used one of my “arms” (hee, hee!) to give him back to his mom! That’s why these were quick photos after dinner! Thanks for the compliment! (Landon says “Goo, goo and drool” Translated: “Thanks!")

Silvercurl- I’m glad I made you day! How nice! My unruly locks have LOTS of product on them in those pictures! I think my head stuck to my pillow that night! Not pretty!

Denzec - If you read in the earlier posts, I did a little self-trimming after a not good haircut in March. (I am paying for that now.) The cut is very textured. Unfortunately, in my haste to cut off blond, I forgot my 4 cowlicks in the back only lay down with 1)Lots of one length heavy hair. 2)Lots of hair product.

Lighting, as you all know, is everything in pictures. Alas, the yellow tones in the room made my hair seem well...too yellow. Can’t see the whites and grays...maybe I should have one of the kids spotlight it with a flashlight next time! Thanks everyone!

Posted by Goldie on 04/29 at 06:24 AM

Greeneyes - Thank you! Although, with all the self-trim spots growing out in the most “interesting” ways...I’m wishing my hair was as short as my grandsons!

Posted by Goldie on 04/29 at 06:28 AM

Suhweeeeeet!  Congratulations!

Posted by SSaS on 04/29 at 06:48 AM

Goldie - Oh, but think how awful the growout would be for you if it WAS as short as his. :o) I totally relate to cowlicks and wild hair. I was SOOOO glad when my shorter style grew out to longer, heavier hair. You’ll be there sooner than you think!

Posted by greeneyes on 04/29 at 07:05 AM

Congratulations, Goldie! Sweeeeeet baby! And no matter what you say about product, cowlicks, etc., that’s a fabulous haircut!

Posted by butterfly_dream on 04/29 at 09:21 AM

Thanks butterfly dream! Lighting, hair gel and spandex- this transition girl’s best friends!

Posted by Goldie on 04/29 at 09:28 AM

Goldie - wow - congrats!  #8??? I’ll never catch up to that, but I totally enjoy my two!  I agree with everyone - you look more like the mom!  That cut is fabulous on you and with that color, I hardly see any gray!!!

Posted by SBKaren on 04/29 at 01:17 PM

Goldie, I agree with everyone else - That is a FABULOUS hair cut!  I don’t see any cowlicks, only beautiful gray hair!  I hope that I will transition as gracefully as you have!  -Julie

Posted by jules on 04/29 at 05:32 PM

Ahh..thank you SBKaren and Jules! Seriously, I could do testing on any product for cowlicks! Maybe, I need to come up with one myself..hmmm.."Cowlick Cream"- This cream is guaranteed to keep those unruly licks down until the cows come home...Hee,hee...I love advertising! (Gotta’ go brew me up a batch now!)

Posted by Goldie on 04/29 at 05:49 PM

i can never get enough pictures!!! i love seeing how fantastic everyone looks during all the stages!!! you should be an inspiration to all those just starting the process!!! it really can be easy WITH all the sound advice one gets here between our fearless leader and all of “us” out there!! almost makes me want to color again and start over .....NOT .... tongue laugh

Petra.

Posted by catweezle on 05/19 at 11:31 AM

Petra - Thank you! Ya’ know it really does feel like “coming home”. Only this time, I have some great company! All of you!

I covet a pixie cut, Petra, my DH does not. So we work out hair compromises.  However, he liked my blond & as you can see, that’s where HE had to compromise! (hee, hee)

Posted by Goldie on 05/19 at 11:50 AM

Ok, then it will be a longish silver cut, very cute also!
Petra.

Posted by catweezle on 05/19 at 12:10 PM

Hey!  I just left you a note on the blog about checking out your story.  I love it!  How neat that you were involved in an Oprah makeover.

I think I’ll do the same thing...take photos during the process so I can see how this is going to work.  I saw some info about the balliage process for helping to grow out the gray.  It’s like highlighting but the highlights are painted on some how.  I’ll have to do some serious checking to see if I want to do it.  I may just opt for doing the normal “grow out.” smile We’ll see.

Thanks, again, for telling me about your “Goldie’s Story.” I loved it!  Stay tuned.

Also you should peruse Transitioning (again, homepage & click transitioning) You will find so many ways for you to do this in style.

In the book section you will find Diana’s book.  This is a must have!  There are so much inspiration & information that you will go to again & again!  You are going to have so much fun! So, glad you’re here!

Posted by RunnerGal on 06/26 at 04:07 PM

Thanks gals! You’re the best! Diana, you are the fastest picture put em’ upper the east side of the Rockies! Now I ban you to a relaxing weekend!!

I took my Oprah pics, a picture of RunnerGal & Diana’s book with me.  The stylist was a dream. She loves natural silver & cut my hair with careful consideration of my hair texture.  It is actually a little shorter on one side at the nape of my neck because of my naughty little cowlick that wants to grow in the UPWARD direction. So, basically my hair swirls across my head!

The real proof was this morning when I got up- ahhh.. no looking like had been through a category 5 hurricane!! Heee!

Posted by Goldie on 06/26 at 04:47 PM

looks lovely goldie.  I might have to take your picture to my stylist!

Hi, new york!!! Thanks!

Posted by Goldie on 06/28 at 10:49 AM

You look like you have the face and the hair to pull off just about any style! Love all the photos!  Just took my 17 yr old daughter to look at a college last week and say a very striking gal in her mid-later 40’s with white hair.  She looked great...and I told her so!I find so much encouragement here!  Linda

Posted by happyhart on 07/05 at 04:45 PM

Thank you, Linda! There really is no better place in the world to get the encouragement we need to make this transition.  I am so glad you found us!!

It is wonderful that you took the initiative to tell another silver she looked great!  If we can all do that, the world would be a very happy silver place indeed.

Posted by Goldie on 07/05 at 06:42 PM

Hi Goldie,

Love the haircut, really cute.

It just so happens that I remember that Oprah episode and I remember saying to myself, oh no, I bet the first thing they do is color her hair. They did and I was so dissapointed.

Thank you for the encouragement earlier today.
It meant a lot to me.

I have tried to explain to hairdressers that just because I have white hair doesn’t mean that I want an elderly womens
hairstyle but they just don’t get it!!!

Posted by Silvermane on 07/07 at 06:31 PM

Thank you Silvermane & your welcome.

I told the Oprah people I really wanted to keep my silver.  But, it’s TV. So it’s all about the dramatic change.  Some of the makeover ladies I was with had to have their hair dyed more than once that day. One poor lady had hers dyed 3 times in one day! They just kept changing it until it was dramatic enough!

After they dyed mine, if I saw a producer coming to check on the makeover progress (aka- Let’s see if we want to re-dye anyone for more drama!) I went and hid in the Harpo Studio bathrooms!  I’m sure some people thought I had a problem with incontinence!

I know it can be difficult finding a hairdresser that’s supportive. But they are out there.  Sometimes you have to mine a lot of coal to get to that diamond!

Posted by Goldie on 07/07 at 06:52 PM

love love the hairdo....i wish mine would do that ...my son just bought himself an acoustic guitar...do you give lessons?? i am so enjoying your “re-birth”

Posted by louann on 07/26 at 04:47 PM

You can have that hairdo, louann!  Some straightening balm (I use Redken Align 12)& a flat-iron & you’re good to go!  I don’t give lessons, but my DH does.

I like that analogy..."re-birth"...I think I am still in the toddler & mashed food stage! Heee…

Posted by Goldie on 07/26 at 06:28 PM

Great pictures and super cut. From where I’m sitting there really is no harsh line between new growth and dye. You look fab!!! You seem to be inching your way to shorter hair. Is there a pixie in your future?

Posted by silvercurl on 07/27 at 04:24 AM

Goldie, who took that photo?  It is such a great shot, you look so lovely!  From what I remember you CAN sing (Mama Mia video) wink so perhaps your husband can give you some guitar lessons (can you play already?) and then you will be the complete package! cool smile

Posted by lulubell on 07/27 at 06:02 AM

Love the new hair do! So beautiful you are!

Posted by Sonja on 07/27 at 06:20 AM

Thank you silvercurl, lulubell & Sonja!  No pixie...although I would, my DH wouldn’t.

My daughter-in-law took the photo.  We have a historic flour mill where I live & it’s one of our favorite places.  My son & DIL are a husband/wife photo team, just starting out. This is one in a series. Very fun!

My DH tries to give me lessons! I am not very patient! I want to play like EmmyLou, RIGHT NOW!!!

Posted by Goldie on 07/27 at 07:08 AM

Ok, EmmyLou—well, if you do learn, this shot could be your album cover! cheese

Posted by Diana Jewell on 07/27 at 07:33 AM

Posted by sallee on 07/27 at 08:17 AM

Posted by jules on 07/27 at 10:21 AM

Thank you ladies! Psst...there is an album in the works..a little farther around the bend!

My DIL (the one who is in England) called me this morning for hair style advice!!! Gotta love that girl!  I told her she should dye it gray & get a pixie cut! Heee…

Goldie,
Your new pictures are beautiful! Great cut and color.
Your grandbaby is adorable!

Posted by Barbara on 08/02 at 11:06 PM

Thank you Barbara! This Grandma intends to buck all trends for a good long time!!

Posted by Goldie on 08/03 at 06:53 AM

Seriously, Goldie,
Come on, you must be Super & Wonder Mom all rolled up into one.

How DID you do it and how DO you do it?
I’m tired just thinking about what having 8 kids must be like.  The 8 grandkids is another story.  Spoil ‘em!

Grandma, shmandma.  I am amazed!

Of course, I have 7 children, but mine are 4-legged and shed a lot. No college, no weddings.

Did you home school your kids? Yikes!  Talk about multi-tasking!

Barbara

PS I sent my Oprah note yesterday but didn’t get a copy of it.

Posted by Barbara on 08/03 at 10:57 AM

Heee...Barbara! Thank you, I take my Geritol (remember that??) Yup, I do homeschool em’.  It helps to have a supportive DH, which mine is.

Your kids may have 4 legs each, but they do require as much attention as the 2-legged kind!  At least I can tell my 2-leggers to go get their own snack!! Heee…

Posted by Goldie on 08/03 at 02:51 PM

Hi Goldie!  I was wondering how the “book of Oprah” ended up.  Was looking for the page and I can’t find it on here anymore.  Aaahh, it’s probably right in front of me and I’m just not seeing it.  Anyhow, with the new In the Spotlight piece that Diana posted, I was thinking that the PPD allergy angle might be attractive to the Oprah people.  We all know how talk shows love to “dramatize” things… as in this case, how the shocking truth reveals that the quest for beauty could actually cause an allergic reaction so bad it could kill!  Of course, they could wrap up the show on a happier note with some staying gray, and beautiful, makeovers!

Posted by grayincali on 08/22 at 12:17 PM

Hey, grayincali!  We have 57 stories. Enough to capture the attention of any of the producers that will receive our “package”!  There are a good many stories that talk of the PPD reaction.  Who knows what the producers will glean from the whole of our stories given to them on a silver platter!

Whatever angle they choose, we are at the ready to give Oprah’s world the best silver has to offer!!

P.S. The deadline is past...that’s why you couldn’t find the campaign header.  But, talking about it here is just fine!

Posted by Goldie on 08/22 at 12:33 PM

Thanks, Goldie!  Good to hear!  I know you’ll keep us posted! smile

Posted by grayincali on 08/22 at 12:38 PM

Goldie,
I didn’t realize there were so many stories.  That’s great!
Many thanks for all that you’ve done.

Do you realize that in the picture where you’re wearing a hat you look like Reese Witherspoon?

I went to You tube to see if the show you were on was there. There was a behind the scene video from a make-over show.  Could that have been the one?  Do you know if it’s on You tube?  Seems like now a days, everything is.

Barbara

Posted by Barbara on 08/22 at 08:29 PM

Hee, more like Reese Witherspoon’s Mom!  I did have the lady tell me that the day of the show.

The youtube make-over show was for one they did a couple months after ours.  Lloyd Boston, who was my stylist did that show too.  He was an absolute dream!

Posted by Goldie on 08/22 at 08:40 PM

Go you, Goldie!  Thank you, thank you, thank you!  Oprah, watch out there’s a river of silver stories headed your way!

Posted by SoCalSilver on 08/26 at 01:43 PM

The postmistress got the biggest kick out of our packages!  It was & is, my pleasure.  Your welcome, SoCalSilver.

Those boxes wouldn’t be impressive if we didn’t get the letters! Go GGLG!!

Posted by Goldie on 08/26 at 01:50 PM

WOW, Goldie!  Awesome job!  Thanks for all your hard work.  Let’s hope Oprah will listen and let the world know that there is an alternative to “coloring away the gray”.  And, BTW, you look awesome.  cheese  Love the hair!

Posted by Aziza on 08/26 at 02:01 PM

Thanks Aziza!  Heee...I just took my apron off before snapping this pic.  Wear anything white at my house & you’re asking for food splatts! As for my hair, it needs a trim, gettin’ bushy!

Posted by Goldie on 08/26 at 02:09 PM

I’m amazed, what a feat!  You are our go to girl, Goldie.  Thank you again.  I can’t wait to hear what they say and wouldn’t you just love to be a fly on the wall when all those boxes show up and they start going through them?!

You look wonderful, not bushy at all.

Is Oprah tall or are you tiny?

Posted by Marisa on 08/26 at 03:31 PM

Thanks Goldie, YOU are awesome!

Posted by lulubell on 08/26 at 04:32 PM

Funny, I was wondering the same thing, Marisa.  I’m guessing that you’re very petite, Goldie…

Thank you for all your hard work!

BTW, you do look awesome!  grin

Posted by jules on 08/26 at 04:37 PM

Goldie,
Make that Reese’s sister.

The piles of boxes are impressive!  I love it!! Again, thanks for everything!

I love this website!  What support we have here.  smile

Growing out naturally has not bothered me as much as I thought it might.  Maybe it’s the short haircut that helps.

Chris

Posted by surfPA on 08/26 at 07:37 PM

Oh, I love being called petite! Heee...even though technically, I’m not.  I’m 5’3”. I do not disclose my weight. (Not even to my hubby!) I took Teresa’s body shape typing test (wardrobe911) & according to my measurements I am an hourglass shape with broad shoulders.

Yes, Oprah truly is a tall woman.  With a larger than life persona.  Her energy is amazing.  Even though I am only wearing one shoe (another makeover story) in the picture & she is wearing heels, she would still tower above me without shoes.

As for not having choices in the makeover experience Barbara, I will say this.  I wanted to keep my silver, they talked me into blond.  Oprah’s very convincing.  This time, however, we will not be denied!

Posted by Goldie on 08/27 at 07:15 AM

Wooohoooo - been gone a while (a lovely vacation in Lake Tahoe), returned to work a bit, but WOW - look at all those boxes!  Can’t wait to hear that you’ve heard a response....and just what that response will be!

Posted by SBKaren on 08/27 at 12:02 PM

Goldie & All,
I’m sure Oprah’s got her own best interest in mind.  What would sell?  Here’s how I envision it....

“The Oprah Makeover Update”

Tape of your Oprah makeover could start the show. Your before pictures won’t be dowdy, but realistic.  Then, segments of your Oprah makeover including the reveal.  You enter and sit down with her.  Chat, chat, chat.

Segue to Diana, the book and the website.

Enter Diana, with book in hand.  It’s a gift for Oprah who accepts it graciously and with a tiny, almost undetectable smile and gleam in her eyes.  The crowd senses something’s in the air.

Oh, coincidentally, the audience is comprised of GGLG-ers.

Oprah’s got a funny look in her eyes as the discussion continues. Then, as if out of the blue, she stands up and every eye is on her. She looks right into the camera, puts her hand up to her hair ... and ... takes off her wig.

<Remember the episode of Sex and the City when Samantha was addressing an audience of women who were cancer survivors? Her words sounded empty and she was losing her audience.  Even Smith was concerned. Sigh.  She was having a hot flash and was obviously wearing a wig. Then, she had had enough!  Her transformation was immediate.  She took off her wig and waved it above her head which was beautiful and bald. The audience caught on and wigs came off and the waving and cheering began.>

OK, now back to the show. The removal of her wig in front of America was an act of defiance.  It was Oprah’s big reveal. What was underneath was her own hair, naturally salt and pepper.

Her action inspires the crowd.  She gets a standing ovation.  Cameras pan to the audience, us, where there are heads of beautiful gray hair being tossed about, flung around and shaken to and fro.

It could happen.

Barbara

It’s the highest rated show in the history of Oprah.

New Reveal

Posted by Barbara on 08/27 at 12:55 PM

I like the way you think, Barbara! wink

Posted by Aziza on 08/27 at 01:05 PM

I have often thought Oprah would really look good if she was some sort of platinum shade, but every time there’s a makeover show she’s always going on about how easy it is to just color over the grays....yeah right!  I bet/hope she’s as gray as all the rest of us & maybe there’s a glimmer of hope she’ll see the “silvery” light and stop die-ing her hair.

Posted by Graydiva on 08/27 at 01:43 PM

Barbara- I really hope Oprah looks in our “Book of Letters” and decides to give MANY GGLG-ers silver makeovers!  When I was on the show there were 9 women who got makeovers!! Wouldn’t that be fun????

Graydiva- One of the moments I will never forget is when I stepped out from behind the screen & there, a mere short walk (Okay, it seemed really looong! I had to go down steps in stillettos!!) away was the Lady O!  What struck me is that she had such presence, an ease, if you will.  And she is very stunning!  Yes, she would be a beautiful silver!

Posted by Goldie on 08/28 at 05:56 AM

Good news!!!  My camera is home!!! Now bring on the photo shoots!!  Canon replaced my entire shutter system so we are in the GO again for photos!!  WOO HOO!!  Its been a long 3 weeks without my camera and I almost felt like I was missing a member of family!  So...lets get together and bring some more fabulous pictures to this site...you’re going to need them for when Oprah calls!!  I’m sure Diana wouldn’t mind seeing more progress as well!

Posted by PhotoAnna on 08/28 at 02:24 PM

Just in the nick of time, sweetie!  I trimmed my hair again.... Just wish your father-in-law liked pixie hair cuts.  Maybe I need to make him watch Peter Pan....either that or threaten to go on a cooking strike!!

Alas, with the start of school getting away to the great western half of Washington is not possible for me at the moment!  What about our other silver sisters from the “west side”? Perhaps a PM to ask may be in order?

Posted by Goldie on 08/29 at 04:57 PM

Goldie,
Here’s what I think “Oprah’s Silver Makeovers” should be about.

This show will have nothing to do with changing the natural colors and patterns of silver haired beauties.  We took the time and effort to get to where we are and want our uniqueness to shine through. But perhaps a new hair cut or style and appropriate hair products would be good ideas to discuss.

And applying new makeup colors and techniques, updating clothing colors, and adding accessories to accentuate and flatter each woman’s unique style.

It’s all about being individuals who want to look the best we can! Come on, you know I’m right Oprah!

Ladies this means they are wanting to do a SHOW,,,BUT WE MUST WRITE IN AGAIN!!  Even if you already sent a letter that went in the book!!  They are putting it out to the public for other women to write in.

I cannot stress this enough. PLEASE GO TO THE LINK & SEND IN YOUR STORY & PHOTOS.

OK GOLDIE!!!  YIPPEE!!!  HERE WE GO!!!  I’M ON IT!!  YIPPEE!! LOL

Posted by lulubell on 09/01 at 09:36 AM

This is no coincidence, ladies. They would have gotten the boxes Friday, Monday at the latest. This show plug went up just this morning. As long as they are considering this, let’s keep the emails hopping! GO!  I already sent mine in. And it’s very quick and easy to do. You don’t have to labor long over what to say (they don’t give you a whole lotta space.) Keep it brief, add a plug for GGLG (to remind them-- oh yes, she was in the book), and include up to 3 pictures of yourself. It’s simple!

Posted by Diana Jewell on 09/01 at 10:17 AM

There WILL be a show!  That’s what these plugs are for! This is our moment!  I just sent mine with my plug for GGLG & 3 pics!  Diana is right.  It is very easy.

Send your letters now to the Oprah link above.

Posted by Goldie on 09/01 at 10:27 AM

DONE!!  It was easy to to do so PLEASE, do it now!!  YIPPEE!!! LOL

Thanks lulubell!

Lulu is right—Quick and Easy!  Done in seconds.

Goldie, Thank you!  Others said we should get Oprah’s attention.—You did it!

Posted by SoCalSilver on 09/01 at 11:09 AM

THANK “YOU” GOLDIE !!  It was my pleasure and the very least I could do for Diana and GGLG and, of course, for you and all your efforts!!  GGLG has changed my life for the better and I will do whatever it takes to spread the word!

Posted by lulubell on 09/01 at 11:11 AM

Barbara, I like the new cut/product discussion.  A few more cuts should do it before my color is gone and the silver shimmer brights shine through!  I look forward to learning more about gray/platinum products to complete my look. Thanks for the suggestion.

Posted by surfPA on 09/01 at 11:20 AM

Thanks, Goldie!  I’ll post soon.

I’m in the hospital at the moment after sacral surgery...kind of a rare surgery indeed, one with subject matter that I have been trying to get on “The Doctors” and/or “Oprah” regarding Tarlov cysts. Maybe it will take a massive mailing like yours from members of my online support groups.

Anyway, I so look forward to all the GGLG happenings with Oprah.  This is such a great group for support in Going Gray.  Love it!  Hope to post some updated photos to the site your provided for Oprah.

Fondly,

Chris in SC grin

Posted by surfPA on 09/01 at 11:31 AM

I got my story in!

Gotta go, but I hope you feel better soon Chris.

Posted by Marisa on 09/01 at 11:46 AM

Aww...Chris, I hope everything is okay??  I looked up Tarlov cysts after I saw your post. It is indeed unusual. I am sending my thoughts & prays to you for a speedy recovery!

If you are up to it you can send any photos you sent to Diana to the Oprah link above.  They don’t have to be new ones!  The show plug won’t be up for long!

Posted by Goldie on 09/01 at 11:49 AM

Thank you SoCalSilver & Marisa!  Let’s keep those emails coming to this Oprah link:

https://www.oprah.com/plugform.jsp?plugId=2329338&referer=http://www.oprah.com/pluglist.jsp?teamTypeName=TOWS

DON’T DELAY!  SEND YOUR PHOTOS & STORY (don’t forget a plug for GGLG) OPRAH IS WAITING!

Posted by Goldie on 09/01 at 11:53 AM

I just sent my story and photos to Oprah per the site provided.  It shows that it was sent successfully, but when I click on “continue” showing on the next page after submission I get an error message.  I made sure that the three pics were less than 500K and 72 dpi.

Anyone else having this problem? thanks!  Please advise.

Chris in SC

Posted by surfPA on 09/01 at 12:10 PM

Happens sometimes on the Oprah site.  If you are at the continue page, the submission was completed & you are done.

If the error message comes up after you hit submit on the show plug page, you need to send your story & photos in again.

If, after you hit submit, the plug page comes back up with a pic resolution problem, you need to make sure your pics are no bigger than 500x500 pixels & resubmit.

Hope this helps!

Posted by Goldie on 09/01 at 12:17 PM

Thanks, Goldie.  I got to the continue page.  The error message came up on the next page. I never got a message about the pics; I made sure they were the correct size. Hmmm… I’ll try it again later, but I dread sending it a third time as I know their email files are clogged with submissions. We’ll see.

Goldie...sent mine in!  Thanks for your hard work!!
~dede

Posted by wtxgray on 09/01 at 01:12 PM

Chris- No need to send it again...you got to the continue page, which means it went through!  Thanks for sending it & please get well soon!!

Thanks dede!!

Posted by Goldie on 09/01 at 01:15 PM

OK, I’m not sure if it worked or not.  I had to submit 2 times due to error.  The second time I sent it, it put me back at the plugform page so I’m not sure. It has all of my info already plugged into the form, just as if I haven’t sent it.  Should I see a different screen?  I don’t see a “continue page”.

Posted by Aziza on 09/01 at 03:26 PM

Aziza- Look up at the top of the page, under where it talks about the show plug.  If you made a mistake in the information boxes or if your pics were too big, it will show in bold, red type what needs to be fixed.

Only when you submit & it takes you to the continue page, will you know that it went through.

Posted by Goldie on 09/01 at 03:44 PM

Apparently I need to submit 3 photos.  I’m having a hard time with that and sizing them down.

Posted by Aziza on 09/01 at 03:51 PM

Just sent mine in… jeez, I wrote too much and had to keep editing the story!  why was it so hard to write essays in high school? smile

Anyway, thanks Goldie for all this work and keeping an eye on the Oprah website… very cool…

Can’t wait for the third chapter!

But I will be avidly watching when this one goes to air!

Is it okay to resend our letters to Oprah that you sent to her?
Or what about my story, “Barbara’s Story”?

I can’t become a member - the function is unavailable due to maintenance.

Am I on the right track?

Posted by Barbara on 09/01 at 08:38 PM

Barbara—the requirements limit you to 2,000 characters only. So most letters have to be shortened. This is good because you can make one strong point, whether it’s a blow for freedom and authenticity, or a point about avoiding toxic chemicals, or the expense of coloring, or the desire to have both gray and long hair. Whatever you feel strongest about, but just be selective. Yes, I think we all go natural for multiple reasons, but when you only have 2,000 characters to tell the story, it’s best to hit the hammer home on one point.

I’m betting the member function will be available by morning. Keep trying, and good luck!

Louann- 3 AM! Oh, man that’s early!  Oprah’s people need our ‘round the clock pestering!!

Posted by Goldie on 09/04 at 07:02 AM

hey Goldie… just saw that Tyra Banks is doing some show where she goes on with her hair natural....  maybe that will get the Harpo team some stimulation…

http://www.boston.com/ae/tv/articles/2009/09/07/tyra_goes_back_to_her_hair_roots_on_tv_talk_show/

Posted by Thisyear on 09/07 at 01:48 PM

Thanks for the link thisyear!  She may not be wearing extensions or a wig, but she’s probably covering a few silver hairs!

Posted by Goldie on 09/07 at 04:43 PM

Hey, if Tyra’s going to show her natural hair, what does that really mean?

I’m thinking that it could look like Diana Ross’s hair.

If it’s been chemically treated for color and/or straighened, doesn’t it stay those ways even after stepping out of a shower?

Sounds like a potentially interesting show. We’ll see.

Posted by Barbara on 09/07 at 10:18 PM

From what I can read from the link she is going to show us “real” people how she does her hair.  From the shower to glam super-model.  Only, last time I checked, I don’t have an entourage of professionals working on my hair after I get out of the shower!!

Posted by Goldie on 09/08 at 06:16 AM

Touche, Goldie.

I saw the Tyra show.  She came out of the shower with her hair combed back and stick straight.

She got some color treated hair snipped, dried and styled, some on air and some not.

So? What’s real about having an entourage fussing over her hair?  I would have liked to have seen what her real natural hair looked like.

There were all young women in the audience with their “real” hair.  Oh please.  They left their weaves and extensions home for the show.

I don’t think there was anyone over 25-ish in the audience.  There wasn’t anything about “real” meaning going gray and looking great.  Now that would have been a Tyra worth watching

Too much hype for something it wasn’t in my opinion.

Hi Goldie,
I sent my story & photos into the Oprah “Are you Ready to Go Natural?” show just now.  Hope Oprah calls you!  The GGLG story needs to be told!

(I love your haircut.  It’s beautiful on you.)

Posted by Beth K on 09/13 at 05:14 PM

Thank you Beth K! Out of our mouths to Oprah’s ears!! We just keep reminding her that we are NOT going away...only getting larger every day!

Posted by Goldie on 09/13 at 06:06 PM

Hi Goldie!

Well, I just tried the Oprah link but it has already expired. You did warn us but unfortunately with my husband just getting home from the hospital last week (after 2 weeks in), I just got around to it now. Hopefully with your wonderful book and all the other submissions through the website they have enough to convince them that this story needs to be told. Please keep us posted!

Thanks!
Nadine

Posted by lookingrayt on 09/16 at 06:53 AM

Don’t worry about it Nadine!  I’m glad your DH is home now!

All we can do is wait & see if Oprah has the guts to do a show about us. Time will tell…

Posted by Goldie on 09/16 at 07:01 AM

Well, ladies “time has told” and here’s the latest....

It appears that the only show plug left about hair has disintegrated into this idea on Oprah.com: “Do you and your spouse argue over your hair”.

To say that I am angered & saddened by this turn of events is an understatement.  How they could turn away our show to this mindless drivel is beyond me.

This is “What I know For Sure”:  The outpouring of stories from my silver sisters will be forever burned in my heart.  Your stories, your funny moments, your tears, altogether in one book is valued & inspiring beyond words. For that, I once again thank you from the top of my silver head to the bottom of my silver sparkly toes!

I will always be a “glass half full” kinda’ gal.  My tendency is to “never say never”.  Perhaps, guided by unseen hands our story will be seen this season on Oprah…
In the meantime, I will continue, with all that is within me, to take our story, this website, & Diana to whatever ears will hear.

You see, I believe in Diana & I believe in us, this sisterhood, this journey.  When a door is shut, look for a window...if the window is locked, climb up the chimney...sure, you’ll get a little soot on your face, but I believe it’s worth the effort.

Sooner or later the tides will turn & the world will look our way.  They will turn around & see this body of women, locked arm & arm & marching into the future.  They will wonder where we have been & we will say, “Welcome to GGLG. We’ve been here all along!”

Posted by Goldie on 09/16 at 12:54 PM

Wow, Goldie, what a beautiful entry in so many ways.  While this certainly isn’t the outcome we all hoped for, your message just goes straight to my heart.  I’m a newby and new to this website, to this journey, but what a glorious journey this is, and what remarkable women are here!  Thanks to everyone at GGLG and especially thanks to Diana.

Posted by Beth K on 09/16 at 01:25 PM

i guess we are just not as exciting as whitney houston and her life of drugs and domestic abuse...oprah could do a “boring” show on gray haired women IF SHE WANTED TOO...that is all i am going to say about it…
why not send our story to ellen or hey jay leno!!! he has LOVELY gray hair...why oprah??? she ain’t the only card in the deck… they have already proved they aren’t the sharpest tool in the shed…

Thank you Beth K, for sharing your journey with this marvelous group of women with Diana at the helm.  We are trendsetters all!

Posted by Goldie on 09/16 at 01:40 PM

Well, louann, I do have a few more tricks up my silver turtleneck!  I have sent a few “fishing lines” Ellen’s way (heee..you wouldn’t have far to travel!).  I also have sent a few “testers” to Rachel Ray...(but, she is “in line” with Oprah!)

Like I said, I’m not done with us yet! Not by a loooong shot…

Posted by Goldie on 09/16 at 01:44 PM

“Do you and your spouse argue over your hair”...Personally I could attest to that one Goldie, but not w/o the silver sisters backing me up. I appreciate all your long hours on our cry as if we are in ‘who-ville’. I am happy right here, GGLG, home sweet home.

Tyra recently did a show on real or natural hair.

What better segue could there be to shine a light on ‘real’ real hair and the real women who wear it!?

Barbara

Posted by Barbara on 09/16 at 02:20 PM

Tyra’s a thought Barbara… Maybe I should send our stuff to all of our “cool guys” talk show hosts?  Maybe we’d get a better response from the guy side of silver? Heee…

Bummer about Oprah!  Hmmm...with all of these brilliant minds on GGLG we have to come up with something.

go for the guys....

Posted by louann on 09/16 at 04:13 PM

ps....dr oz has his own show now ....wouldn’t that be a good one!!! and he can talk about how much “healthier” it is for us “au naturale” gals!!! plus OUR OZ needs to meet her oz!!!  smile

Posted by louann on 09/16 at 04:29 PM

I thought about Dr. Oz, too.  Great show!  Chemical free would be healthy…

Posted by surfPA on 09/16 at 04:31 PM

I’ve been perusing Dr. Oz since he got his own show plug column on Oprah.com.  His new website has a “be on the show” header, but it’s not up and running yet.  The two great & powerful Oz’es in one room....can you imagine???

Posted by Goldie on 09/16 at 05:04 PM

To all you gorgeous, glamourous Silver Sisters—I appreciate all you have done, all Goldie has done. You put time, thought, and effort into writing beautiful stories. You followed up by responding to the show plug. And we were able to put together quite an impressive package. Goldie probably still has calluses on her hands from 3-hole-punching approximately 700 pages!

So, as I tell you all to do when going gray—Give it your best shot. We did. All of us, collectively, gave it our best shot. If they prefer to put a show on about arguing spouses, they are best able to judge their own audience. Personally, I think shows like this sink to the level of Jerry Springer, and that is a sad comment on a viewing audience. I thought Oprah’s was smarter—but I’m sure they’ve done careful analysis.

This show will not die because over 70,000,000 women are over 40. Their hair is turning gray. They are wondering what to do about it. They CARE about it. If we have to take our “show on the road” elsewhere, we will. But as both Rachel Ray and Dr. Oz are affiliated with Harpo, I doubt they will be likely targets. Who knows? Goldie is a never-say-die gal, and you can bet, so is your OZ! cool grin

Posted by Barbara on 09/16 at 09:15 PM

Hi Goldie,
It was ‘lump in throat’ time when I read your post this morning. I thought there may be something up when I logged into Oprah and could only find the’arguing with spouse’ link.
Something you said made me think.....is there any chance that Diana and yourself could collaborate to produce the next book using our stories? Maybe to combine and continue the excellent beauty, fashion and product advice with women’s changing perception of beauty (and men’s!)and their role in the 21st century?
Just a thought, you never know, the TV companies may one day BEG to do a programme about GGLG!
Meanwhile, thankyou for all your hard work on our behalf,
Chrissy smile

Posted by Chrissy on 09/17 at 04:22 AM

With me coming in late in the game, maybe you all have already considered this, but what about print media?  I would think the local city newspaper near Goldie as well as each of the women featured in the stories would be quite interested.  What a great feature story for their Sunday Style section!  The groundswell of stories in local papers throughout the world (literally) would capture the attention of a little paper like, say, oh, The New York Times.  THEN, the REACTIVE producers of the talk shows would be begging for this story! (As Chrissy predicts!) And/or what about magazines that target women post 40, i.e., More ?  Just a couple of thoughts…

Posted by Beth K on 09/17 at 04:55 AM

Great idea about the local newspapers.  We could all plan to make contact around the same time. I have had a subscription to MORE for a number of years, and I really like it.  I recall that they have done some “graying” articles but nothing like this.

And, a book would be awesome! I’m always referring back to the website for fashion ideas and hair product suggestions, so an actual item I could hold in my hand would be great.  I like my computer, but I’m a hands-on want to have the book in front of me, girl.

Posted by surfPA on 09/17 at 05:15 AM

Thank you Beth, Chrissy and surfPA for your suggestions. All already done. Hundreds of press kits have gone out to city newspapers across the country, magazines, local TV media, etc. etc. The book idea that you mentioned Chrissy is already registered. Show proposal ideas have gone out to both local/national talk shows. Timely releases have also gone out (ie, tying the natural movement into the economy). All this goes on “behind the scenes” of this website, which is why OZ is busy doing so many other things. I have a very long mailing list—several in fact, and these people hear from me regularly. So far, it has netted only a few interviews. If you think transitioning is a long journey, consider that I have been at this for over two years, since the site first went up. Do I get discouraged? Yes. But I so want the world to hear OUR story that I will not give up.

If any of you would like to join me, and be marketers in your own town, contact me personally. I’d love to have you! cheese

Posted by Diana Jewell on 09/17 at 05:23 AM

Now that IS a great idea! We could be the “town criers”!!

Can you imagine all the silver sisters working on getting the word out via their local media?  There would be such a groundswell of attention, the big guys (or gals, as that may be!) couldn’t pretend that we’re not here anymore!!

BTW- Diana, after doing just one media campaign, my hat (I do wear hats ALL the time!)goes off to you! Whew! Press kits, proposals, follow-ups, tracking....ENDLESS!!  And I am putting my hands together in applause & a big GGLG “thank you”, for continuing to be the leader & BFF in all of our silver lives!

Let’s continue this together & work to get GGLG & Diana the national forum they deserve!!

Posted by Goldie on 09/17 at 05:42 AM

Diana, I had no idea the scope of what you do.  Wow and scads of thanks!

Grass roots for silver roots.

Barbara

Posted by Barbara on 09/17 at 08:34 AM

Well, I’m late on this but I just want to give my two cents worth.  I’m not too surprised that Oprah would pass this up.  She says she stands for strong women but is very selective about the strong women she wants to be on her show, i.e. Sarah Palin and I’m sure there have been others.  I find that hypocritical and because of that I rarely watch her show anyway. I don’t believe someone needs to agree with every veiwpoint someone has but you can certainly appreciate their hard work and dedication to whatever motivates them, especially when it’s meant to affect positive change. She could have had Sarah Palin on her show and would have been respected even more for it.  We are all strong women standing up for a veiwpoint that is healthy, individual and strong!

Our voice will be heard, the right door will open, waiting is hard but it will pay off greatly.

Diana, Goldie - BIG HUG & THANKS to the both of you.

I’ve been to the land of Overwhelmed.  I just had way too many things on my plate and no one to help me eat it.  Unfortunately friends had to be put on the side for a little while while I re-organized.  In the middle of it all I was taking care of my mom (knee) and my son was sick for a week,4 of those days with high fever, a bit scary.  I’m still very busy but it looks like things are slightly more balanced.

I’ve missed you too and all my friends here.

Posted by Marisa on 09/24 at 02:26 PM

Hey everyone!  So I was just taking a peek at Oprah’s homepage and funny, but there’s a pic of her in the rotating sequence in a red dress and I could swear her hair has a silvery shine to it on top.  Huh!  Must be the lighting!  confused

Posted by grayincali on 09/24 at 07:09 PM

Yea, it’s the lighting.  I wonder how often she has to do her roots???

Posted by Goldie on 09/24 at 07:14 PM

Ah, she probably doesn’t care how often since she has personal stylists galore!

Posted by grayincali on 09/24 at 07:20 PM

Oh, Marisa, the Land of Overwhelmed. I’d know my way there with blindfolds! But I’m glad things are settling down, so maybe you can peek in every once in awhile. And HAPPY BIRTHDAY! What a difference a year makes, huh? Now you are shining, radiant, and truly YOU! We await your grad shot! cheese

You wanted to know about the vitamins I take? A big fat Solgar’s fish oil, a multi, and a vitamin D. That’s it. They’ve discovered that vit D is just soooo good for you, that I probably don’t take enough to matter. Only 400 mg. Still, I figure, better than nothing.

Now you take it easy, find that balance, and come back home any time!

Don’t you think there is a possibility she wears a wig?  I have a lot of hair and it takes a lot of work to tame it.  Fragile hair can’t take the type of abuse on a daily basis that she must go through for the show.  Just wondering.

Thanks for the Birthday wish Diana.  It’s nice spend time at home with my SSers.

Louann, I get away with stubble at least once a week, I hide it by wearing pants LOL .

Yes I know Diana, I was joking.  I wear pants to cover the SHIN stubble.  My hair is black after all, he he.  Now go to bed, it’s after midnight in your neck of the woods.  My goal is to be in bed before the strike of 12 here.  I’ve got 24 minutes, oops now it’s 23....  but quick before I go.  Heidi Klum wore a sequinned skirt that had to be made with the same fabric as your little, gorgeous, sequinned jacket during the episode of Project Runnway tonight.  Loved it!  Oh! now I only have 18 minutes… night night....

Posted by Marisa on 09/24 at 08:42 PM

*HEADS UP!!!* I just saw a promo for today’s Oprah show and it is all about hair including Oprah’s hair history! Looks like she took our cues and ran with it except she’s not including us mad . Wonder how much, if anything, she will be saying about going gray?!

Nadine

Posted by lookingrayt on 09/30 at 02:56 AM

Okay, so the first time I saw the Oprah promo I had just caught it out of the corner of my eye while I was making the girls their lunches for school. I just saw it again and now I’m thinking that it will definitely not be a serious discussion about hair as she’s talking to Chris Rock who has a documentary called “Good Hair” (and you see Chris Rock in the promo wearing some crazy orange wig)! I’m still curious, though, about Oprah’s “hair history” although I bet they are just going to show clips of her changing hair over the past 20+ years of her show. I’m still going to check it out.

Nadine

Posted by lookingrayt on 09/30 at 04:21 AM

I saw it too Naydine, in fact I said to my husband, “that was supposed to be “OUR” show you know!” mad  Of course I do plan to watch it, just in case she honors us with at least a mention! After all, I am convinced that it was our letters and Goldie’s hard work and commitment that “planted the seed” for the hair theme in the heads of OPRAH’S people to begin with. wink

Posted by lulubell on 09/30 at 05:10 AM

I can’t imagine that all the work and efforts put in to documenting that going gray AND looking great is possible, will be ignored??? If it is not mentioned by Oprah at all, then it must mean that this either still a too controversial issue! Or worse....that the Oprah show has a cosmetic sponsor, producing hair dye, who will not admit the topic to go on show angry  I can think of a few but won’t mention names here. Just some cynical thoughts from me....

Posted by Babybenz on 09/30 at 05:53 AM

P.S Here in Europe I can only see reruns, and will not be able to see the show in direct. For those of you who do, try to read the sponsors list shown at the end, to see whether there are any hair-related sponsors. Remember that each time one of us stop coloring the dye-producers loose a consumer…

Posted by Babybenz on 09/30 at 06:03 AM

Well, let’s look at it this way. Chris Rock is already a built-in celebrity, so there’s more bang for the buck. Secondly, showing your own hair history might be amusing to a flock of devoted followers. This was NOT “our” show at all. Our show would have addressed what women really care about—their OWN hair, their own graying journey. Still, if Oprah’s only going to do one hair show, I suppose this is what they thought their audience most wanted to see. I think it’s misguided, and I think they misjudge their own demographics. But you can’t argue with Oprah’s phenomenal success.

So put on that orange wig, Chris, and let’s all have a giggle. And let’s pretend that over 70,000,000 women aren’t facing the graying issue.

Posted by Diana Jewell on 09/30 at 06:06 AM

It is a show about the history of African-American hair to coincide with Chris Rock’s documentary called “Good Hair”. (Too bad she didn’t put Ouidad on the show)

If you look at the shows that are churning out of Harpo Studios at the moment...they are all over-the-top, star-studded, ratings busters.

Remember what Forest Gump says?  “That’s all I have to say about that...”

Posted by Goldie on 09/30 at 06:18 AM

Babybenz, you don’t have to look for a hair-related sponsor. There are the “Big 3” in the international cosmetics world, and they own practically ALL the brands. I should do a flow chart for you guys. You’d be surprised at who owns what. In any case, you might see an ad for Olay, or Maybelline, or Cover Girl, or any skincare product on the market and think—what does this have to do with hair? Plenty. Because the companies that own those brands own hair coloring brands, too.

My biggest fish to fry is convincing these companies that women are still going to buy all their cosmetics and lotions and potions—plus even more hair products than they ever did. If you were coloring your hair, maybe you bought “the box” once a month. Now you’re buying treatments, special shampoos and conditioners, shine products, styling products, and on and on because you want to take even better care of your hair than you ever did. Sigh. Goes right over their heads because they are so busy protecting what is a declining business. confused

If there was any censorship going on, it was self-imposed. I doubt seriously that Oprah has to worry about losing an advertiser!

Posted by Diana Jewell on 09/30 at 06:23 AM

A lot of industries are now targeting an adult market segment, as we are the ones with money to spend: Homes have been bought, kids have been brought up, now it’s our turn. So they are marketing vacations, saving products etc. etc aimed at those above 50. Sooner or later the cosmetics got to come around as well, but I fear it won’t happen until we see Anna Wintour transitioning on GGLG LOL

Posted by Babybenz on 10/01 at 01:18 PM

That’s funny, Babybenz! Anna Wintour transitioning with us!
Anna, oh Anna...we’re waiting for you!

Posted by Goldie on 10/01 at 06:42 PM

Yeah, hell would freeze over first. cool smirk

Posted by Diana Jewell on 10/02 at 05:36 AM

Hey, hell would be nice, in a shade of “icy white”...heee…

Posted by Goldie on 10/02 at 06:04 AM

Well, Monday is salon day...I am heading back to the “chair” to get cleaned up!  I am taking my DIL again (she’s getting a haircut too) as my official photographer.  I’m also treating my 10 year old daughter to a “new do”. Girl day!!

As we all do, I have scoured the net for every hairstyle in the free world!  In the end, I decided on this one:
http://awonderfuleverything.blogspot.com/2008/02/lip-length-bob-very-short-bob-photo.html

This will rid me of some more blond. Alas, not all....

I have yet to decide what funny faces I can make at this appointment.  My DIL just laughs & shakes her head...I can only imagine what she thinks when she’s looking through the lens...heee....

Posted by Goldie on 10/07 at 01:10 PM

Oh that’s adorable, Goldie, but it’s a little like what you had before. In the guitar shot. No? Maybe a leeetle shorter. I’m sure the silver has to start shining through at some point. Either that, or you went naturally blonde! big surprise

Posted by Diana Jewell on 10/07 at 01:52 PM

So weird how the silver reflects the blond & in some pics I end up looking like I’m ALL blond!!! Yikes! Whoever, thought that would actually be a problem??

It is a little like my guitar shot pic.  The new do will be shorter, more blunt cut & shaved in a “v” up the back of my neck. It’s more angled up the back of my head too.  I’ll have my DIL take pics if the back this time.  We’ll try to get the lighting to show the silver this time. I am reeeally looking forward to cutting my mop!

Posted by Goldie on 10/07 at 02:00 PM

Very nice Goldie!  It is quite short in the back but longer at the sides giving it the illusion of length, the “best” of both worlds! wink

Posted by lulubell on 10/07 at 02:05 PM

Lulubell, at this point, I don’t care about the length. I’d get a pixie.  But, I want my DH to like it too!  I already got the thumbs up for this cut!

I started a “style book”. Just a scrapbook with hair styles & clothes I like. I’m working on re-inventing myself.  I don’t know what I’ll end up being, but hey, it’s fun!!

Posted by Goldie on 10/07 at 02:44 PM

Thumbs up, Goldie!  cool smile  Will this make you dye-free in the back?  How fun for your DD to have a new ‘do also.  A girl’s day out, how fun!  Looking forward to seeing the pics!

Posted by Aziza on 10/07 at 03:48 PM

Aziza, I think I’ll end up looking like a parfait in the back...heee...silver on top, blond in the middle and pepper on the bottom!  A little Prell & whipped cream & I’ll be dessert!!!

Posted by Goldie on 10/07 at 03:54 PM

Goldie, I really love the new cut!  Boy, in the pic with the red sweater you look even more like Reese Witherspoon than ever!  So underneath it’s all natural?!  Now, just a little more to go and you’ll be 100% silver!  I got a cut today too!  I like it and I think it’ll be something I’ll like even better when it grows a bit.  I haven’t played around with it yet. My hair stylist blew it dry and it was smooth as can be.  No flattening iron required. I’m very happy.  It is still such a mixture of brown and silver that I updated my member pic and even though you can’t really see the silver it is spread all over and looks more like highlights all the time ... more in the front and top and spreading to the back.

Posted by grayincali on 10/18 at 06:52 PM

Well, I see the silver, Grayincali! LOL Looks good!

Posted by Diana Jewell on 10/18 at 07:07 PM

Thanks grayincali! Awww..Reese Witherspoon, that’s sweet to say, but I look more like her mom! Heee… Oh yea, it’s naturally down to the wood underneath. 1/2 way up, at least.

I looked at your new pic grayincali, you’re such a beauty! I can see your silver too- just lovely!!

Posted by Goldie on 10/18 at 07:23 PM

That is a beautiful photo Goldie, great to see your progress.

Posted by Christie on 10/18 at 07:49 PM

Goldie - Great progress and great cut!  You look so pretty under that birch tree.  What a beautiful picture - your hair has some of the same colors as the birch bark… smile

Posted by jules on 10/19 at 02:57 AM

Thanks Christie & Jules...if only all of my hair were “birch bark white”!!  Ah well, one step closer!

Posted by Goldie on 10/19 at 05:58 AM

Thanks Goldie!  Mom?  No way.  How about sister??? ; )

Posted by grayincali on 10/19 at 06:34 AM

Goldie- super picture, lovely cut, and you can really see the progress since the photo of you sitting on the steps!
BTW the red really suits you! grin

Posted by Chrissy on 10/19 at 06:54 AM

Thanks Chrissy! Yup. Time marches on and that means hair DOES grow! (Not nearly as fast as one likes, though! Heee...)

Posted by Goldie on 10/19 at 07:04 AM

What a great cut, Goldie!  See,as I said before, you can wear any cut and make it look good. wink Looks like you’ve only got about an inch or so to go.  You look lovely! Very sweet.

Posted by Aziza on 10/19 at 07:07 AM

Such a cute cut, Goldie, and great gray progress! Years ago, I had a male stylist who would shave my hair underneath, but only in the back. It really did help with the bulkiness, but made for an interesting ponytail. :o)

Posted by greeneyes on 10/19 at 07:08 AM

Aziza, thank you! I have changed my cuts through this process, including which side I part my hair.  So this makes for spots with more blond left than others! It’s all natural underneath 1/2 way up my head where it was shorn, to be sure!

Posted by Goldie on 10/19 at 07:13 AM

Thanks greeneyes!  This “shaving thing” is a trend now.  You can do a little shaving or alot. I have two cowlicks at my neckline in back, so shaving really works well when my hair is short.  If you can’t make the cowlicks behave, just shave em’ off!! Heeee....

Posted by Goldie on 10/19 at 07:19 AM

ahh cowlicks…
great haircuts all the way around...you and suzanne!

we had a neighborhood bbq last night and one of my neighbors is a very hip and stylish gray (since her 20’s) so it is that lovely white...she had gone for a cut a few days ago and had actually considered lowlights and her stylist said NO WAY....so we may just have a stylist in the la area to add to our list diana!!!

Posted by louann on 10/19 at 07:29 AM

Thanks louann! A stylist in LA who refuses to even do lowlights?? Yay!!

Posted by Goldie on 10/19 at 07:37 AM

Great cut, Goldie!  And aahhh look at the color of those beautiful eyes!!  Your natural color is making them sparkle more than ever!!!

You are almost there Goldie
You look great!
Katie

Posted by Katie on 10/19 at 03:13 PM

Goldie, that is such a sweet picture of you!  I love you in red and I love your new cut! I am SO trying to NOT cut my hair right now, it is a daily struggle. confused

Posted by lulubell on 10/19 at 03:16 PM

You can do it, Lulubell!!  I just know you’ll wake up one morning and it will be the length you dream of!  Thanks for your compliments!

Posted by Goldie on 10/19 at 03:35 PM

I’m workin’ on it, Katie! I’m not as fast as you were!

Posted by Goldie on 10/19 at 03:36 PM

Goldie~ Wow… that’s very creative (the shaving underneath), and the cut is perfect on you.  Thanks for sending in the photos smile

Posted by SSaS on 10/19 at 03:38 PM

Goldie,

I really love your look in the last picture.  Is your hair amazingly thick?  I envy you, if so.  I am afraid my hair could not handle being shorn.  I like every one of your pictures here!  You are wonderfully photogenic!

Beth/Shine-On

Posted by shine-on on 10/20 at 04:23 PM

Awww Beth...you MADE my day!! Thank you!

Posted by Goldie on 10/20 at 04:33 PM

GOLDIE, oh my, you look so completely different with your long, dark hair!  I would never have guessed it was you.  Is that your natural hair colour? So very pretty!!

Posted by lulubell on 10/30 at 03:21 PM

Haha! That’s so fun, I can’t wait to see what everyone comes up with! Gorgeous curls, Goldie.

Posted by Christie on 10/30 at 03:30 PM

Yup. That’s the way I was. Now you can see why I was teased about being named “Goldie”.  My older sis is a true blond. I call that picture my Cher ala “Moonstruck” phase! Heee....

If I had long locks like that now, they might eat me alive!

Thanks lulubell & Christie!  Can’t wait to see what you girl’s pull out of yesteryear’s photo albums!

Posted by Goldie on 10/30 at 04:50 PM

Hee!  Goldie!  Love the 80’s pic!  I had a very similar, dark brown style.  Yep, the hairspray with the bangs as high as you could get them and the curly, kinky look (naturally, w/o a perm, though).  I used to love the Aussie scrunching spray (bought it in a gallon jug .. hee) and my college roomie and I would have to nearly scrape it off of the floor around our vanity area ... eeewww!

Posted by grayincali on 10/30 at 06:11 PM

Oh yea...Aussie scrunching spray was a “must have” in the hair arsenal!  We affectionately named that bang look “the wall”.  I would carry a travel size version of Aussie in my purse. You never knew when “the wall” might come tumblin’down...horrors!!

Posted by Goldie on 10/30 at 06:16 PM

Oh Goldie, you look beautiful with long dark curly hair, but more beautiful now!!  Is your hair still curly like that?  Do you straighten now?

I don’t get a chance to post or read as often as I would like, but some of the newer posts mention you may be going through a rough time.  Hope all is well.  Sending lots of positive thoughts and energy your way.

You are so great at encouraging all of us, I just wanted to return the same to you.  Thank you.

Hope you have a nice weekend.

Posted by Carol A. on 10/30 at 06:16 PM

Thank you Carol A.!  I was under the weather (not sure what it was) but, I’m on the mend!

I have natural wave in my hair. It “takes” to a curl VERY easily. That “look” was created by wrapping my hair around strips of material & then tying the ends in a bow (the material, not the hair).  Imagine how I looked after I had all the “rag curlers” in place! Yikes, talk about a look for trick or treating!

To get the look you see in my bob pics, yes, I have to use a flat iron & smoothing cream.

You have a great weekend too!!

Posted by Goldie on 10/30 at 06:31 PM

Goldie,
What picture?  Where can I find it?
Thanks,
Barbara

Posted by Barbara on 10/30 at 11:54 PM

Goldie, I recognised the 25 year old you immediately. Your face is just the same. Those 80s hairstyles were a hoot - the bigger the better! I’ve just sent in a photo of 21 year old me - my hair was not as full on as yours was but you can really tell it was taken in the 80s.

Posted by Sharon on 10/31 at 02:34 AM

Beth K and Silverchic...I love your short haircuts!

Chris

Posted by surfPA on 10/31 at 06:30 AM

Posted by Goldie on 10/31 at 06:43 AM

Sharon- I can’t wait to see your 80’s do’!!

Posted by Goldie on 10/31 at 06:44 AM

Regarding the homepage. When you rely on email notifications for “chatting,” you miss out on a lot of news that is going on. Always presented first on the homepage.  You may also miss out on other chats that you have not subscribed to. It’s always best to check the homepage—and also take a look at “Who’s Sayin’ What Where” because you’ll see conversation going on in other chats that you may want to jump into.

Most all of the chats are back at the Café Gray, and you’ll find that comments directed to other Newbies ‘09 are best placed there.

Posted by Diana Jewell on 10/31 at 07:00 AM

goldie i will be on the hunt in my “picture drawer” for a pic of my longer locks...i’ll have to go waaaay back as i have had short hair since the early 70’s...maybe my shoulder length graduation pic...ohhh i do have some old prom pics...now this could get interesting...especially since the DH will be in the pic too!!!!

oh and those prom dresses in the early 70’s...whole lot different than today...no skin showing that’s for sure… LOL

Posted by louann on 10/31 at 07:11 AM

DIANA,
Thanks for the great suggestion.

GOLDIE!  I have a feeling that you were a disco queen. Your face has remained so lovely.

Oy, prom dresses.  Horrifying!  Junior prom is one of the worst experiences of my life!  The dress...the hair do..the date. Sheesh.

I guess since we’re spilling the beans, I might consider sharing some embarrassing pics. Oooo, I’ve got one of me in a leprechuan suit and another in a short, spiky wig. I actually like the short do, but wouldn’t have the guts to do it.

What do you think of a “that was then, this is now” picture album?

Barbara

Posted by Barbara on 10/31 at 11:04 AM

Barbara, that IS precisely what we’re doing. Limited to 1 pic, however. Can’t tell everybody’s whole life story! LOL

Posted by Diana Jewell on 10/31 at 11:11 AM

Ooops!  Need to go to the cafe chat for general conversation.  Sorry.

Posted by surfPA on 11/01 at 07:14 AM

Me thinks it’s time for a trim....  Time to peruse hairstyles…

Posted by Goldie on 01/08 at 05:50 PM

Hope you can find a good “gray-friendly” salon in your new surroundings, Goldie!  If you do, let us know! cheese

Posted by Diana Jewell on 01/08 at 05:55 PM

Unless cattle can cut hair, I’m up a creek without any scissors! Heee…

I will probably mosey across the state line to the little lady who cut my hair before.  Which reminds me, I need to send you her info!

Posted by Goldie on 01/08 at 06:04 PM

Goldie, You look beautiful either way - but I love the gray!  grin

Posted by Johanna on 01/31 at 07:11 AM

I recently went gray on my last birthday when I turned 64.  I have always looked much younger than I am and with the gray that has not changed.  Got a short cut, my hair feels and looks healthier, is shiny and has body.  Everyone tells me that my hair is “becoming” and how great it looks. My family loves the color and so do I.  It’s nice to wash’n’go and not worry about pesky roots. My hair is a nice silver color.

I love your hair, Goldie.  You look great.

maggietass

Posted by maggietass on 02/06 at 12:12 PM

Thank you maggietass! I would love to see YOUR picture!!
What kind of a hairstyle do you have?

Posted by Goldie on 02/06 at 02:34 PM

I don’t usually do pictures. My hair is short--pixieish on the sides but a little longer in front--a kind of swept one sided bang style.  My daughter, who I refer to as the Hair Master, cuts it for me.  She is a certified extentionist who works with recovering cancer patients, and whomever else wants extensions. My hair is a little darker on the sides since I stopped coloring, but someone asked me where I had my highlights put in. I LOVE not coloring!

Posted by maggietass on 02/08 at 02:00 PM

Goldie,
I thought you were getting a new cut.  When is that supposed to happen?  I’m anxiously awaiting pictures!

Posted by Silver Mama on 02/14 at 02:50 PM

Aww..you’re so sweet to remember Silver Mama!  My DH broke his shoulder & I had to cancel the hair appointment & put on my nursing uniform!

Speaking of pictures, yours are beautiful...I can’t believe how fast you transitioned!  And your color is amazing!

Posted by Goldie on 02/14 at 07:12 PM

Oh Goldie, You are so sweet.  Thank you.

Sorry to hear about your husband.  But I bet he likes the nursing uniform!  wink
I hope he makes a quick recovery and that you will be able to spend some time pampering yourself soon.

Posted by Silver Mama on 02/14 at 07:48 PM

Hey Goldie,
Sorry to hear about your DH’s shoulder, (that happened to me once- skiing accident- so I know how painful and frustrating it is!) I was only thinking yesterday that we hadn’t heard from you so much recently. Does this mean that you are doing all the sorting out in your new home? Hopefully your ‘army’ of children and grandchildren are giving you a hand! Take care smile

Posted by Chrissy on 02/15 at 04:53 AM

Sorry this is a belated response Chrissy!  My DH is doing better everyday.

Ah, yes...sorting out...it’s an ongoing process.  I can’t tell you how many “box fort communities” the kids have built!  Talk about your instant neighborhoods!

Posted by Goldie on 02/17 at 07:27 PM

I LOVE it Goldie, bangs included! Is it still shaved close to your head underneath? And how is your DH doing?

Nadine

Posted by lookingrayt on 03/01 at 09:25 AM

Goldie, All I can say is Wow, Wow, Wow.  But then there never was a doubt that you were going to be a FABULOUS silver again.  By the way, love the bangs.

Posted by Chrysalis on 03/01 at 09:26 AM

Posted by grayincali on 03/01 at 10:11 AM

Awww...thanks gals...I can’t tell you how nice it is to come back from my DH’s physical therapy appointment to all of you!  We woke up early this morning to find out our heat pump was not working!!!  So, I am typing in my coat & hat...heee...your comments are the only thing keeping me warm!  Well, that and copious amounts of hot coffee…

Posted by Goldie on 03/01 at 10:41 AM

Nadine, my DH is getting better every day.  His PT says he’s ahead of schedule...at least HE is...HIS schedule keeps me completely OFF schedule!!

I’m not shaved underneath on this cut.  I have had variations of the bob for so long, I was ready for a new style.  The layers & long bangs were just what I needed!

Posted by Goldie on 03/01 at 10:49 AM

Thank you for sharing your story, Goldie.  You are so gorgeous and I love your new cut!

Posted by Cisami09 on 03/01 at 10:50 AM

Also a very cute new cut! Love the bangs! You look beautiful! :o)

Thank you lindyk & kathy s.!  Heee....if I sent Oprah my picture she’d probably send me a gift certificate for hair dye!  That is one talk show host that is missing the silver boat to freedom!  However, I do like the idea of sending a pic to remind them that all the makeover money in world can’t buy the beauty of all of us here at GGLG!!

Posted by Goldie on 03/01 at 01:10 PM

Thanks louann!  I have to tell ya’....your fantastic cut (I do love short hair!) was in my mind with this last style!  I look forward to the day we can meet & put our pixie heads together for a Polaroid (remember those) moment!

For the past transitional months I have had the honor of gracing this site we call GGLG.

This path we call the “silver brick road” and our fearless leader we call “Oz” have been a joy for me, every day.

Our beautiful “Oz” started this revolution & everyone here are bricks in that silver road.

As I have said before, I truly believe every woman has a story to tell.  Every newbie, every graduate, has the opportunity to shine from the bottom of her feet on the silver road to the top of silver head held high towards the twinkling stars.

I hold dear to my heart all your stories that were told in the great “Oprah Campaign”.  Your hopes and tears and triumphs that poured out on paper still capture my deepest desire to tell them to the world.

With every newbie, our book of letters continues to grow.  My imagination soars with the possibilities our journey holds.

So here’s to you silver sisters.  May every silver dream be yours.

Diana, our wonderful “Oz”, my appreciation for you grows daily.  Thank you for your dedication and countless hours.  I remain forever in your service to all things silver.

Goldie I love the completed transformation. Oprah is out of touch and we don’t need her. All of us are doing our bit to silverize the world LOL

You’re pixie cut has always been one of my favorites!  Thanks for the inspiration!

Hi, Beth A.!  Thank you!  Between moving & nursing my DH’s broke shoulder, life has been keeping me very busy!

Posted by Goldie on 03/02 at 04:33 PM

OH Goldie!  That was worth waiting for.  You look AMAZING.  Congratulations.

Posted by Silver Mama on 03/03 at 07:50 PM

Goldie, you look wonderful! Definitely model material!
Hope your DH’s physio is going well (and that you are getting your naps!) grin

Posted by Chrissy on 03/04 at 03:45 AM

Thank you Silver Mama!

Heee...Chrissy, no modeling unless I get put on “the rack” & get stretched taller than 5’3”!!

Posted by Goldie on 03/04 at 07:32 AM

Absolutely gorgeous, Goldie!

Posted by Aziza on 03/12 at 08:01 AM

Oh thank you, Aziza!!

Posted by Goldie on 03/12 at 08:50 AM

You are welcome, Goldie!  Forgot to mention, the cut is adorable.  You are so photogenic!  grin

Posted by Aziza on 03/12 at 11:16 AM

I’m so enjoying the ease of this cut Aziza!  My DIL & son #3 are my official photographers.  They’re wonderful! So, it’s very easy to smile & be natural for pics!  Thanks again!

So, is spring coming yet in your neck of the woods?

Posted by Goldie on 03/12 at 11:25 AM

It shows. grin Saw my first robin and the snow is mostly gone in my yard but I’m sure it will be back.  It is WI, after all.  I’m betting it’s nicer where you are.  Just looking at your picture, and everyone else’s too, I’m thinking I should send one in of me.  It’s been growing for quite awhile. I’ll have to see when I have time.  Life has been extremely busy and I don’t get on much but I think of you all and miss my time here. Hope you are all moved in and enjoying your new home.

Posted by Aziza on 03/12 at 11:34 AM

Does anyone ever completely move-in...heee… Yes, we are enjoying our new home.  Oh you should send an update!  I bet it’s gotten quite long & even more beautiful!!

Posted by Goldie on 03/12 at 11:40 AM

I’m with you Aziza - I should get my act in gear to take another picture. My hair has grown quite a bit, too. Cute hair, Goldie. Love the layering! grin

Heee...now known as “The Woman who Snubbed Oprah’s Advice”...quite fitting!  Kinda long for a posting name though… Thought this link to my Oprah saga should be here at my story.  Gina from Lookingood did an article about my experience.  Here’s the link:

Hi Goldie--Thanks for providing the link. I enjoyed reading that--even though I know it was not an easy experience. I’m so glad we can all come here. Thanks for continuing to be an inspiration!

Beth- It was fun & enlightening.  I’ll always be grateful for the experience...it led me here.  I just wish they would have listened to what I really wanted, not to what makes good TV!

Posted by Goldie on 06/01 at 10:45 AM

Goldie, I love seeing all the progress and growth through the photos...your hair is beautiful !
I am praying mine turns out so half as pretty when it grows out. :o)

Posted by bloomingkat on 06/12 at 07:44 AM

Bloomingkat~ Thank you so much for your sweet words! I have no doubt your hair will be lovely.  Your member’s picture shows a head of great thick hair!

Life has been, as it happens from time to time, full of unexpected busy surprises.  I am calling this time, “The Summer of my Sanatorium”.  I am hoping to emerge in the best health of my life.

Here’s to health!  Inside and out!

Posted by Goldie on 06/12 at 04:06 PM

Goldie,
I can’t wait for my hair to grow out more.
I am getting mixed reactions from family members.
I can handle it...this is the route that I want to take to a more natural me… I mean, all the dyed part was gone as soon as I cut it short, so now the growing out is all I need to get used to.

Surprises and changes help us grow. I am sure that what ever is going on in your life, you will come out better than ever.

Cheers to good health and happiness. :o)

Hi Goldie, thankyou for your post, I am gradually finding all these supportive messages that were left for me.
I hope that you are feeling better now, that the sparkle has been reinstated, and that you have bid goodbye to the ‘summer sanitorium’! smile

Posted by Chrissy on 08/18 at 08:57 AM

You are so welcome Chrissy!  Yup.  I think I can check out early from the sanitorium.  Still a few glitches here and there, but Vegas promises lots of sparkles!

You and your DH will continue to be in my thoughts!

Posted by Goldie on 08/18 at 11:42 AM

Goldie - we have not seen an update lately - Are you still sporting the same cute hairstyle as the last picture above?

Posted by grayme on 08/26 at 10:50 AM

I’m trying something new grayme. It’s called “Keep your hands away from the scissors!” This is a taaaall order for me...I really do love a short do’...heee…

Growing out these layers is keeping me at a loose end...literally!  Who know what will happen between now and the time I get on the plane to Vegas....maybe I’ll get my hair cut there??? Hmmm...I wonder what world-class stylists are in LV?  I wonder if we could do a live hair cut at the event?

Will someone please handcuff me until mid-October???

Posted by Goldie on 08/26 at 11:49 AM

I’d be happy to oblige, Goldie! It just so happens that my daughter works for the Niagara Regional Police (911 dispatcher, but hey, she’s got connections) so getting a set of “cuffs” should be easy......NOW.....STEP AWAY FROM THE SCISSORS! cool grin  LOL

Posted by lulubell on 08/26 at 01:38 PM

Cuff me lulubell, cuff me!!! Heee....
