White hair is all part of a global “cooling” trend, and for that we should all be grateful. It seems, the younger you are, the more you want your hair to be as white as it can be. And let’s not forget the celebs and the designers who are making this an important beauty trend.
Yes, some of them wear wigs, but that’s because they can’t get white hair any other way. Others go almost white, and can’t go any lighter. Think how lucky we are – we can! If you haven’t thought of yourself as a CoolGirl or a trendsetter before, now’s the time.
Let’s look in on CoolGirls around the world. Beginning with the Shibuya and Harajuku girls of Japan. Known for innovative style and cosplay outfits, they may sport many colors in their hair. White just happens to be a big favorite.
If you spot any CoolGirls pics, send them in. We’ll be updating this gallery all the time!

Here are two CoolGirls sent in by Jade Jordan, one of our Gallery Girls. Now do those silver shades remind you of anyone we know??
And Pink scores again in a close-up! Great cut. Great CoolGirl.
And how could we leave Lady Gaga and Pixie Geldof off our list? It's all in the attitude!
Grace Slick, the original CoolGirl when she was lead singer of The Jefferson Airplane, is now an artist. Just wish that platinum fall matched her beautiful white hair better. Go ask Alice.
Fledgling designer CoolGirl Katie Gallagher is causing quite a stir among the fashion crowd. Just 23, she's known for her unique style, and as the press says: "note the head-turning silver coif."

Hard to believe, Goldie! With your personality, I bet YOU were Queen of the CoolGirls!

i am glad to see that now my hair is on the “cool” side i too can be cool for the rest of my life....
Posted by on 06/11 at 07:21 PM
Well, how “cool” is that?
Posted by on 06/11 at 07:25 PM
I wonder what tortures these girls went trough to become “cool”
Amazing they still have hair on their heads.
Posted by on 06/12 at 03:51 AM
Pink’s hair is stunning. Sensational cut, color, style and it seems to glow.
Could her color be from a bottle? Wig? Natural?
Wondering,
Barbara

I am delighted to be cool! I feel so lucky to have such white hair at my age - it’s brilliant. Never thought I would hear myself say that!!
Pink’s hair does look stunning but I think you’ll find it’s dyed platinum. The flashlights are making it look whiter I think.
Posted by on 06/17 at 10:47 AM
I agree! I absolutely love my icy white with charcoal lowlights. I was delighted to see how my hair turned out. As I’ve said before, I am loving it more and more as it grows out.
If I had known how fabulous it was going to be, I would have done it earlier.

I see we have our first ‘Cool Guy’ on the homepage. Where do we nominate?
Posted by on 07/06 at 03:03 PM
Article is already with the web designer! Oh yes, it’s raining men! Got some goodies. People have been nominating in Talk On, but you can do it here, too, Sharon. Who’d ya have in mind?
Posted by on 07/06 at 03:11 PM
Phillip Schofield, he is a TV presenter here in the UK and has also appeared in musical theatre. He went grey very young but dyed for a while, eventually going natural in front of our eyes. A real silver fox. http://www.schofieldfans.co.uk
Posted by on 07/06 at 03:34 PM
I already nominated Anderson Cooper but I may as well post it here as well.
Sharon I had a look at Phillip Schofield just now and wow, not too shabby at all!
Posted by on 07/06 at 04:16 PM
Wow - what great pictures! If those cool chics aren’t good motivation I don’t know what is - especially the last one, Sarah Harding---hmmm don’t know who she is but she takes a great picture & what fabulous hair!
Posted by on 07/28 at 07:27 AM
Hi Graydiva—nice to hear from you! You must have missed the little blurb I did on Sarah when she was the “lead” on the homepage for CoolGirls. She was discovered on the UK show “Popstar,” and picked for the fifth and final member of Girls Aloud. She also does some modeling. I agree, what a great crop of white hair!
I tell ya, if people are wondering if white hair is for grannies, they only have to look here!
Posted by on 07/28 at 08:16 AM
Is her (Sarah) hair naturally that color Diana?? If so, WOW!
Posted by on 07/28 at 08:20 AM
Kinda doubt it, Lulubell. You know these rock stars! Remember, don’t try this at home. If you have any dark in your hair, you’ll just go orange. If you have it lifted professionally, you’ll go pale yellow. This takes superbleach, light hair to begin with, and, uh, a willingness to risk breakage.
Of course, I’m not really SURE what color Sarah’s hair is in “real life,” so I could be all wet.
Posted by on 07/28 at 08:28 AM
Just did a little research. Looks like she was a “blonde”—with darker roots. See above.
Posted by on 07/28 at 08:41 AM
Diana thanks for posting the pic of Sarah’s blonde hair with darker roots, too bad the first photo wasn’t her natural colour, it looks so pretty! I remember a time when my hair had taken on a bad greenish
tinge and I had to have the color stripped from my hair by a professional colorist who specialized in color corrections The smell was terrible, my scalp was scorched and in the end I had to have the majority of it cut off. Not one of my proudest moments......it was “me” who was responsible for the green shade to begin with.
I did have breakage all along the top of my forehead that just had to grow out, there was no other way to deal with it. So I agree 100%, do not try this at home!
Posted by on 07/28 at 04:09 PM
Great cool photos of silvered hair beauties. Nice treat!!
Posted by on 08/03 at 10:47 AM
Ooo la la… she musta’ borrowed those cool shades from our lulubell! That lulubell..always ahead of the class!!
Posted by on 08/07 at 10:45 AM
Hmmmm........nope, not mine Goldie
I wouldn’t part with them now, they are starting to “grow” on me! I wish I had her hair color though!
Posted by on 08/07 at 10:56 AM
the coolest thing is I found this in a millisecond, using the new search feature!
Posted by on 08/07 at 10:58 AM
Yay! Comes in handy, doesn’t it, Thisyear?
Lulubell, so glad you decided to keep the shades. They really ARE cool!
Posted by on 08/07 at 08:41 PM
Lulubell, you picked up those silver shades not having a clue you’d become a fashion diva. You go girl!

What really catches my eye is the shine… any tips or great products that will help? I’ve noticed that while I’m diggin’ the color transition, I miss the shine…
Posted by on 10/15 at 08:14 PM
Cyrhen, have you checked out the Care & Treatment tab? Look at the article “Haircare Products for Gray Hair.” You’ll have to scroll all the way through it, some of the products don’t apply to shine, but some do. Also look under “Targeted Gray Hair Care” and click on the blue bar “Dull Hair.”
There’s also been quite a discussion on shine in the chat “Product Watch” and some women swear by using a white vinegar rinse followed by a conditioner. Be sure to dilute the white vinegar!
Posted by on 10/15 at 08:26 PM
Cyrhen~ Yup, I use the diluted white vinegar rinse followed by conditioner to get rid of the vinegar smell. It works great and it’s cheap too!

Hi there,
Just noticed some ‘cool girls’ this week this side of the pond.
One is Alison Steadman, UK actress, who has a gorgeous pic in Woman and Home this month. ( I’d send it in ‘cept for the copyright laws)She has lovely silver hair just touching her shoulders, and the final two inches or so are blonde! Great to see celebs in transition! She is my role model!
The other is our former shadow Home Secretary Ann Widdecombe, who according to the Daily Mail, (Richard Kay)’has gone back to her roots. And they are very grey’. Later in the article ‘a fellow guest’ at a funtion says ‘It is actually quite brave to go completely grey, and actually it really quite suits her’ Well, I think that is supposed to be a compliment!
Just goes to show, those green shoots are shootin’

I must admit that I watch QVC from time to time--especially when Bobbi Brown is on with her cosmetic line. She has a model named Roseanne who has fabulous silvery-gray hair worn
in a spiral perm style. She must be in her early 30s as she
has beautiful unlined skin. It’s interesting to see how the
makeup looks on her compared to the other models on the
show. Bobbi won’t be on again before 2009 ends, but I must
applaud her for having a silver girl among her models.
Gyraffe
Posted by on 11/20 at 12:08 PM
As do I, Gyraffe. She also put Susan McGraw in one her her books, I believe it was Beauty Evolution. Susan is a great gray (in our Great Inspirations section) and also a member of GGLG. Bobbi’s been working with silvers a long time, and it’s just great to see that she delves into the complexion “changes” and the palettes for grays on QVC, too. Thanks for alerting us.
Posted by on 11/20 at 01:34 PM
Cute - but most of these girls are dying their hair just as much as they would be if they were disguising the grey - just as much hassle. Sarah Harris of UK Vogue is a good model for genuine (if very soignee) grey: http://women.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/women/beauty/article6861713.ece
Posted by on 12/18 at 09:21 AM
Thanks for the link, Grisette—yes, we’ve visited this one before. Sarah Harris is definitely cool. There’s no doubt that these gals have dumped a ton of bleach on their hair (if not a wig!), but the point is that they are making gray/white/silver part of the modern idiom. Which gets to your earlier point, posted in “Gray Hair and Your Career,” about how people will perceive you as an artist if you choose to go gray.
There’s one good thing about going gray the natural way—you won’t need to bleach, strip, or otherwise damage your hair!
Posted by on 12/18 at 01:29 PM
I agree, Diana. Imagine, I had to wait until I was over 50 to be this cool. Sarah Harris is beautiful as well as cool. What a gorgeous mane of gray. Maybe this will help my career!
Posted by on 01/29 at 11:41 AM
Well yes, but in the say-it-ain’t-so department, just spotted a pic of Sarah Harris in Feb. Vogue (page 90, under Contributors). She is wearing a long braid, as research for her article “Plaits, Please,” also in this issue. Her hair is dark brown. In the article, she mentions that she got the braid to “match” her hair. I don’t see a speck of gray in that braid. Of course, we all know, lighting is everything. . .but take a look. I just added it above. Oh, Sarah.
Posted by on 01/29 at 01:22 PM
Oh,no! Sure looks brown to me. What’s she gonna do now that her natural silver is back in style? Too many chemicals. Love all the pics, BTW. Kate Moss really is a beautiful woman - in any color.
Posted by on 01/29 at 03:30 PM
Awww, Sarah…
I just grew in my first inch of grey. It’s pretty much the same colour as Ms Harris’s used to be. I’m loving the rebellious side of it - apart from the way it looks, I so don’t want to follow the herd on dye!
Posted by on 01/29 at 11:53 PM
Congrats on the first inch, Grisette! Love it. It’s even going to look more “rebellious” the longer it grows. Then you can out-Kate Kate, or any of the CoolGirls who think this is just the trend du jour. Onward, Silver Rebels!
Posted by on 01/30 at 06:43 AM
I may have missed it but I would like to know - is Kate Moss a “natural” gray or is it dyed gray?
Posted by on 01/30 at 07:09 AM
Well, here’s the thing. She’s 36. Bet she’s got a few!
But about these streaks, she did have a silver toner applied, from what I’ve read. But the ridiculous debate that’s going on among the catty press is—should she have “at her age?” Seems they feel it’s fine for younger gals to embrace an artificial gray, but when you could POSSIBLY have gray hair of your own, well, then, not so fine. Oh PUH-LEEZE.
Posted by on 01/30 at 07:22 AM
Oh, I love all the buzz about gray matters! It only brings attention to US & all we have to offer! Plus, it gives me more to post on!!
Posted by on 01/30 at 08:16 AM
In our paper it said that she was ‘sporting pale blue gray streaks for the bag lady look! ouch!
Posted by on 01/30 at 08:39 AM
Goldie, I agree. How can we capitalize on this trend to get some favorable attention in salons, in the press...gray is gorgeous at any age, for great lady look!
Posted by on 01/30 at 10:14 AM
These girls are all young model/singers/actresses who dye their hair and tone it. It’s more platinum than real gray and in my mind doesn’t have much to do with being middle aged and gray. I mean, it’s fun, sure, and encouraging, but not really relevant. The ladies on this board for the most part don’t look too much like this. It’s quite a different look and in fact, it’s quite high maintenance.
Posted by on 02/02 at 02:48 PM
FUN, it’s so important to have fun!!
Oh, and a little encouragement goes a long, long way!
Now, last but not least, each and every one of us on this board love our own, unique look......the true beauty of all natural, silver hair! Welcome back joan dark, it’s nice to have you back!
Posted by on 02/02 at 04:29 PM
Hey Joan Dark! Great to hear from you!
Yes, they all are young, impetuous and ever so fashion conscious! But, when you look at what comes out every season on the catwalks of fashion around the world, NO ONE (in their right mind) young or middle aged & gray would wear those concoctions! That’s why they’re “trends”...they get implemented into mainstream fashion in some way, shape or form.
That’s what makes this page and the links to Kate Moss & the header on the home page about gray hair streaks relevant for women everywhere.
From catwalks of Paris to the sidewalks of mainstream America, gray is finally taking it’s rightful place as a COLOR!
Posted by on 02/02 at 05:02 PM
Yes hopefully. I think it’s gorgeous myself. I’ve gone back to dyeing so havent’ really been frequenting the board so much. Some nice additions. For the most part, I think everyone looks better with the gray. Yes, it’s more authentic and of course, much healthier. Pouring all those chemicals on your head, constantly, can’t be good. However, I"m back to doing it. My hair is a little dry to say the least. Ugh. So, I’m thinking of growing it out again. Its actually that high maintenance very light silver blonde. The cut is a pixie bob .Anyway, everyone on the board is making great progress. Good luck to the second timers! I kinda know what that feels like.
Posted by on 02/02 at 06:45 PM
I’ve always been a second-timer here Joan. So, I know how that goes! And your cut & color sounds just like my sisters...pretty and yup, high maintenance!
I think one of the terrific things about Diana is that she has always espoused the fact that if you decide it isn’t time to be silver that’s okay! You can always come back to it later.
It is just nice to hear from you. Your comments make people think. I like that about you!!
Posted by on 02/02 at 07:14 PM
Thanks Goldie that’s very kind of you. It’s a great board. Just very overwhelming to think about starting all over again. I mean, I like how my hair looks but its really quite dry. It’s okay while it’s short but even then you can see its damaged. I just turned fifty and get lots of comments like “You don’tlook your age” all the time. Someone yesterday said that they thought that I was in my thirties. I myself fluctuate. Sometimes I think yeah, I look closer to forty and other times I think, man, I look like my mum. She’s 75. She’s in great shape mind you, but she IS 75. lol. The thing is, I think that perhaps the comments may not be so kind if I grew my hair out. Last time I was gray I wasn’t gray for long enough to really know. It’s not that gray makes us look older necessarily, though it can, it’s more just the general perception. The exception to the rule is if you’re so young looking that it almost looks whimsical. Yeah, don’t think I’m there!!
So, all the usual and various dilemas persist and then I admonish myself for being so vain and thinking about my stupid hair so much.
Know what I mean??
Posted by on 02/03 at 03:07 PM
I think it’s more about attitude that ages us. And we all think about our hair, alot! It’s not our vanity, it’s our reality! Heee…
Do I look younger with Oprah Blond? Probably. But, it never felt right for me. I feel more confident in my silver. Everyone’s journey is different.
Hey, do you have Diana’s book? The same products that you would use to nourish and moisturize silver, would do the same for your hair. She lists them all! Or you could look under the Care & Treatment tab. Gotta put that moisture back in!
In any case, it’s all about where you feel best. Cause’ if you don’t feel your best, dye or no dye, you won’t be your best!
Posted by on 02/03 at 03:36 PM
Yes well my ‘best’ or not my ‘best’. Hmm… I guess that changes daily! mostly it’s how I feel rather than how I look but I guess that’s for all of us. I don’t think I’ve ever had a time when I felt my best all the time, but some things definitely feel better than others.
Yes I have Diana’s book. I went to some trouble to get it as you can’t buy it in Oz or even get it sent online. I got my mother in law (she’s American) to send it. It’s really good. And yes I have the treatments but I think my poor old hair is a bit past it. Of course we all know you can’t repair damaged hair, however, you CAN disguise the damage and give it the appearance of relative health, but my hair is not responding. It’s just too dry, too much dyeing.
Oh and as for the whole aging thing,I do have a funny story about this young guy who thought I was my husbands mother. He didn’t see my face or my body, just got a quick glance at the back of my head as I was going into the restroom. I laughed it off but I must admit, I think it did affect my decision to start dyeing again. I kinda felt bad for my husband not so much for myself even though he though it was funny and irrelevant as well.
Posted by on 02/04 at 02:09 PM
Correction, Joan Dark, you CAN buy it here. Right on our pages. We ship international books all the time. Let’s see, lately we’ve shipped to South Africa, New Zealand, UK, Canada, etc. etc. etc. I don’t know what part of the world you are from, but all you have to do is go to the Book Boutique and follow the instructions. Yes, you must order through Paypal, but you don’t even need a Paypal account to do that. Credit cards are accepted. Sorry you had problems ordering, but I can’t imagine why.
Posted by on 02/04 at 02:44 PM
It’s no biggie, I’ve got the book but I can assure you that when I tried to order it, I couldn’t. It seemed incredibly simple, but when I tried to actually order it, my only option was to buy an huge amount. The actual number of books escapes me now. I had a couple of people look at the website for me, just to make sure I hadn’t missed something because it really did seem very straight forward. Anyway, no dice. I ended up emailing you personally and you actually responded pretty much immediately and said that you didn’t ship to Australia. .....too much tax or something?? Sorry, I really don’t remember the exact details. It’s probably about a year ago now. My mother in law did get it for me now and it was no hassle. The book is very reasonably priced and a good read.
Thanks for the reply, Dianna. It’s really no problem. Got the book.

I’m getting my hair cut like Pink’s in that picture above. I went the cheap route on getting my last “trim” and the hairstylist gave me a full on haircut and messed it up so I will be going to my regular stylist next week. I am still cutting off the last bits and pieces of my old color and I’m still growing the grey out. It looks really good so far.
*snaps*
Posted by on 06/16 at 06:57 AM
Glad to hear that, Rachel Ray! And sorry to hear that your “trim” turned into, uh, something more. Happens to us all.
I love Pink’s cut—should look cute! Be sure to take a picture in this time, so your regular stylist will know exactly what you’re shooting for.
Posted by on 06/16 at 01:33 PM
I took a picture of the one above with my phone so I am ready this time. My regular stylist will know what to do even if i just tell her. She is THAT good. I needed a trim and saw a hair salon in Walmart (yes i should have known better) and decided that for 12 dollars I couldn’t pass it up. WRONG. My already short hair got even shorter and the layers aren’t even blending.
Posted by on 06/16 at 02:59 PM
I simply LOVE white hair!
