Texas Silver Sisters Event

Dede, Dara (Greeneyes), Lynn and Judy (.925) convened at the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens for an afternoon of fun and frolic. Or as Dede says, “We had a real Blasty Blast!” After lunch outside, they explored the Japanese Garden, with all of its many wonders. There were goldfish to feed, stepping stones to try, bridges and waterfalls and oh, my!

Dede started the day in the best zoological way by explaining why snapdragons were called that.

Judy feeds a fish - but he likes her finger better!

Beauties on the bridge.

Beauties about to go in the drink!

But the biggest "wonder" of the day was getting to know each other. Laughing and chatting, and seeing all the many shades of silver. Dede reports Dara's hair is soooo much more silvery than we can see in the pictures. Dara says she felt like she already knew Dede, and it was fun to get to know Lynn and Judy. Everyone said Lynn is the funniest gal ever with so many stories to tell, and that Judy is so full of life and appreciates every moment. The gals also "ambushed" another great gray, and told her all about the site. And you'll be glad to know, "It's a Small World" was hummed only once! When it was time to say good-bye, they had a "couple of rounds of hugs." There will be other times, gals! Especially since they insist they had "more fun than the SoCal gang!" Hmmmm, is there a competition in the works?

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL

Lynn wowed everyone with her fabulous silvery hair...

And her wonderful sense of humor. Here she is "going fast."

Lynn & Dara demonstrate the many beautiful shades of gray!

Judy decided to show off her roots, rather than hide 'em. She's proud of them!

Dara lets her silver shine in the sun. She's earned it!

Dede pops out between the bamboo. Boo!

And all the gals pose for the famous "Going Gray Looking Great Hat Shot!"

OH YEA!!! Here we are!  Great Job, Diana!!  Now...tell me we didn’t have a “Blasty Blast”...(which, by the way, is a term I stole red-handed from Peeksmom!!) Let’s go back this weekend!  It really was a beautiful day!  We had so much fun!  Wish everyone could have been there!  Fun stuff...like after lunch, we were all touching up our lipstick, and Judy whipped out her lip-lining pencil, and lined her lips WITHOUT A MIRROR!!  So, of course...I had to try it...yea...uhh...i need practice!!  Lynn’s brave retelling of hilarious moments with revolving doors and slippery steps...and if you look closely enough...we made Judy go stand in front of the statue in the photo above...all the while the sign at her feet saying..."Please do not leave the path or walk on the grass”...oops…
It was just great to meet everyone with this common bond...thanks again, Diana!!

Lynn and Dede - WOW, I wish my color would turn out like yours!  Gorgeous!  Dara - as it’s been said, your silver shines bright in the sun and it looks great!  And Judy - I see those little silver strands beginning to sprout forth!!

What an awesome location you chose to showcase your beauty!! Where in Texas is it?  Just curious ... I am a native Texan that was transplanted in SoCal and I still have a lot of family in Dallas, San Antonio and Houston.  My Texas roots run deep!

Posted by grayincali on 11/14 at 02:04 PM

grayincali, gotta love those deep silver Texas roots!!  We were in Ft. Worth, and the Botanical Gardens near the Kimbell.  YOU SHOULD HAVE COME TOO!  Once a Texan...well...you know how it goes!

Gee...it seems crazy...but I never thought I’d hear someone saying..."I wish my color would turn out like yours!”!!!  That’s making me VERY HAPPY...you just made my FRIDAY!!

If anyone would have told me that I would have so much fun with complete strangers… I would have laughed.  But we did, Dede, Dara and Judy were all so wonderful ... the nicest, sweetest and coolest women I have met.  All wonderful.  I had agonized and agonized over my hair because not one woman in my family (mother or father’s side) had let one inch of their gray hair “shine” for all to see.  I am happy to say that I love have gray hair now.  I love this site and Diana Jewell for being a beautiful and brave woman and helping me and all the lovely ladies on this site.  I am happy to be a great gray!

And isn’t Dara’s hair the coolest?  In the shade it has these wonderful highlights, but in the sun it just “bursts” out.  Dede’s hair is beautiful and those curls are natural too.  Did you notice how Judy’s gray just gleams in the sun?  Her hair is so long and gorgeous.

It was a beautiful day and we had so much fun.  The song I have been humming since the event?  “A Natural Woman"… I don’t know who sings it, Aretha, maybe… I am happy to be that woman and it is all thanks to this site and all these wonderful women!!!  Girl Power… or should I say..Gray Power!!!

Posted by Lynn on 11/14 at 08:05 PM

I just love these reports!
Again, Diana, I think you’ve earned mega-karma points (if there is such a thing) for creating this community.

All of you look amazing...Dara, I just think there is something regal about you- love the color-to-color shot of the two pals together…

thanks for the pics!

Posted by Thisyear on 11/14 at 08:13 PM

Hi lynn- I think “Natural Woman” is Carole King on the Tapestry album....hey! thanks! now I’VE got it in MY head.

Okay...now I finally stumble onto reading these comments! I looked at the story the first day it was posted, but forgot to come back to talk!

Regal??? I’ll go look it up in a minute. :o) Thanks for all the nice comments, ladies. I’ve been enjoying my hair much more this week - after meeting the Texas girls who have made me feel so good about it!

This morning I was wanting to go back to the botanical garden and see everyone again. I will say we are having a mighty cool, windy morning in Fort Worth, so it’s good we did it last week! The weather was so perfect! Today we’d be shivering!

Dede, Lynn, and Judy are the best! I’m so glad I got to meet them before the rest of you do! :o) And no matter what those California girls say....Texas girls have more fun! :o)

Posted by greeneyes on 11/15 at 07:48 AM

ALL of you look amazing! And what a beautiful place to meet! Love the story and the pics!

I love the colors of y’alls hair...and I know where to go in Ft Worth now.

You look like you have made some great friends. Yea!!!

Lynn, How long did it take for your hair to be all one color?  I still have a mixture.  When your hair started to go “silvery” was it shorter or has it been basically this style?  Mine was very short on top and gradually got longer (about shoulder length).  Recently my hair has gotten very straight.

Posted by grayme on 11/17 at 12:23 PM

You gals look fantastic! Don’t you just love how the sun does a great job making that gray just shine?!?  Dara’s a great one to prove it!  What a beautiful place to have a silver sisters gathering. Such fun and it shows on all of your faces:)

Posted by Shara on 11/18 at 11:00 AM

Shara - Yes - sunlight is great to show off silver! I was so excited when the other ladies told me I had more white than they thought I did. :o) I still have more dark than white, but as my hair gets longer, the white shows off better. Both Lynn and Dede have such beautiful colors - even better in person. And Judy is just beginning her journey.

By the way, thanks for your nice comments on the newbies thread. I enjoy wearing my hair in the BG (before gray) way. My hair just cooperates better with it. Plus, the longer my hair gets, it calms down some with the weight. I was getting very tired of flipping everything up! I didn’t feel like it was “me.” :o)

Posted by greeneyes on 11/18 at 11:49 AM

Greeneyes...You’re so sweet!!  I think it’s so cool that I get put in a group of great colors with Lynn!  I agree that her hair is stunning! I’m just so glad we got that shot of you in the sunlight so everyone could see what we are talking about!!  You’ve got GREAT SILVER!  Hope everything is good in Cowtown!

Dear Grayme, I had worn my hair about 4 inches shorter...kind of chin length and it was wavy/curly and I noticed that it was getting straighter and straighter.  When I noticed that my roots were really white, about 3 years ago, I decided to stop coloring but didn’t know what to expect and cut it into a short shag, but then kept cutting and cutting until it was Jaime Lee Curtis short ... I hated having my hair that short and two years ago all the color was cut off and I started letting my hair grow and here I am.  I am digging the color and the length and have decided to let it grow a little more.... I don’t know how long I am going to let it grow.

I am surprised that it is so gray, but like I said ... I am digging it.

Posted by Lynn on 11/18 at 08:24 PM

Dede..Thanks...I now have a picture in my profile.  Thank you thank you thank you.  You are as smart as you are beautiful!  Woo Hoo.

I just cannot tell you how wonderful it has been to find this site and to meet Dede, Dara and Judy at the Texas Silver Sisters Event.  It was a beautiful setting and such a privilege to meet all these three wonderful women.

And my husband is so much happier...because I am finally comfortable with my hair and not bugging him… poor guy..never complained but could never convince me that my hair looked good.  Love you all.

Posted by Lynn on 11/18 at 08:45 PM

Hey Dede and Lynn - My sweet friends. :o) (I’m sure Judy is out there somewhere - just havin’ fun!)

Dede - It’s all true! Your hair color is so pretty, I want it! :o) Actually, since you all made me feel better about my hair, I’ve come to relax in my color(s).

Lynn - I am so glad we were able to help your husband out! hee hee hee… Isn’t it funny when your husband tells you something (concerning beauty or fashion,) but you just really need a woman to confirm it! :o)

I’ll be talking to my husband or kids and out of the blue I’ll say, “Dede this” or “Lynn that” or “Judy something else” and they’ll say, “Dede who?” or “Lynn who?” or “Judy who?” :o) I’ll answer, “My going gray friends!” It’s funny!

I came away feeling so much better about my hair, and so did Lynn. There is nothing like a Silver Sisters’ Event! Everyone needs to attend an event near you!

Posted by greeneyes on 11/19 at 06:40 AM

That’s right greeneyes!  And if you’ll notice the picture of the back of our heads… your hair is shining like a star.

I’m glad you guys were there to lift the burden off my husband’s shoulders too!

Posted by Lynn on 11/19 at 08:02 PM

Drats! I am disappointed beyond description that I missed this gray-t occasion since I live in Dallas!

I hadn’t looked at the site for weeks because I’d been totally consumed by the election and when I did come back for a peek-in over here, the meet-up was underway that very moment.  That’ll teach me to stay away so long. ;-(

Y’all look gorgeous! The pix are beautiful. You picked a wonderful spot to visit.

Please do count me in for the next get-together, even if it’s just coffee somewhere.  --- Anita

Posted by anita on 11/19 at 09:08 PM

Well double drats, Anita! We would have loved to have you along! Sorry you missed it. Keep a watch for the next event. We know there will be one, but no date planned yet.

Am I correct in assuming you are Anita from the newbies first semester? Just trying to keep everyone straight! :o)

Posted by greeneyes on 11/19 at 09:29 PM

Yes, greeneyes (Dara), I’m from the first semester bunch. It does get confusing keeping everyone straight.  Especially infrequent droppers-in like me. lol

I didn’t realize there were so many Metroplex women on the this group.  I will be watching for news of another event.  --- Anita

Posted by anita on 11/19 at 09:43 PM

I’ll be looking forward to meeting you in person, Anita!

We really had an instant connection and so much fun. Lots of laughs and not a moment of silence or awkwardness. The Texas girls are great.

I bet your hair has really grown since your last picture. When do we get to see an update? (hint, hint) :o)

Posted by greeneyes on 11/20 at 07:00 AM

Looks like you all had a lovely time.  So nice to see the real life connections happening as well as the virtual.

best to all, mika

Looks like you had great fun. I’ll try to join a future Texas event if I can. I’m in north Texas.

Goinggray2 - I’m looking forward to meeting you next time! We really did have fun.

Posted by greeneyes on 11/20 at 05:44 PM

I have to tell you guys… I was doing a little shopping in a strip mall and I walked out of a store and was waiting for a car to go through and they waved me through.  I thought to myself, “isn’t that sweet that they are letting a gray haired woman cross”?  Well the car pulled around behind where I was walking and just for a second I was alarmed and I heard a man’s voice calling out and I turned around and two men had their heads together and were hanging out the window and they said, “we just wanted to tell you that your hair is beautiful”.  Is that not the craziest thing?  I thanked them and smiled for the rest of the day.

Posted by Lynn on 12/13 at 09:00 AM

Lynn,

I have to say, I saw your post and I am not one ‘lil bit surprised.  You have by far one of my favorite head’s of hair on this site!  It is just 100% gorgeous!  The color, the healthy bouncy look, the cut .... I really do love it all!  And if anyone ever asks me about whether or not to go gray, I’d have to show them your pic b/c you truly rock the silver!  You very lucky!!!!!!

Posted by grayincali on 12/13 at 09:09 AM

Okay ... I do know where to use apostrophes (heads) and I meant to say Your very lucky .... I try to ignore my constant typos, but sometimes.... rasberry I need my coffee!!!

Posted by grayincali on 12/13 at 09:12 AM

Aww shucks!  That is so sweet… AGAIN, I will be smiling for the rest of the day.  Until I found this site and met Dede, Judy and Greeneyes… I had a coloring kit and everyday I would say, “not today but maybe tomorrow”.  I feel so much better and all the kindness.  I no longer have the coloring kit.

Posted by Lynn on 12/13 at 09:17 AM

I’m not at all surprised Lynn, your hair is fabulous!

Posted by Sharon on 12/13 at 09:40 AM

Lynn. Shew....I’m relieved to hear the coloring kit is G.O.N.E! You just don’t know how upset some of us would be if you colored that beautiful hair of yours.

Great story of the guys complimenting you!!! Were you flinging it all around the rest of the day? :o) Bet you bounced a bit more than usual after that.

Seriously, you have such a vibrant personality. You shine as much as your hair. :o)

Posted by greeneyes on 12/13 at 12:22 PM

It was the funniest thing to see these two heads sticking out the one window… and yes I was bouncing… thankfully not down any stairs.  And Greeneyes has heard my stories ... I was thankful I didn’t run into anything and drop stuff and totally spasm. When I was trying to be my coolest… I have been known to walk into windows.

Vibrant, what a great word.
