50+ Myth Busters

Sallee Smith

This picture was taken when Sallee was 50, holding her new granddaughter, Isabella. And for all you who are worried that going gray will make people think your children are your grandchildren, fear not.  Stay looking glam, and don’t worry about the “grand” part. Because real grandmothers can look hot, too!

Karen Ferretti

Karen Ferreti, at 56, is an avid bike marathoner, having ridden in 11 since 2000. Rising before dawn, to begin at 6:00 AM, she’s off on a 26.2 mile trek when most of us are still in our fuzzy slippers. Here, she’s shown with her husband, who introduced her to the sport, after completing the Long Beach International City Marathon. She’s also participated in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, completing 26.2 miles on day one, and 13.1 miles on day two. As she says, “Age doesn’t limit us – attitude does.”

Just want to say, before we got this comment box working, Sallee got lots of comments at the Café, in the Talk On! section.  Tired to move them here, but can’t. confused Go see what other Members had to say—as if you couldn’t guess! Sallee does look radiant!

Thank you wtxgray for the compliments! I was doing kickboxing at the time of the pic, awesome workout. It’s amazing the color we discover, isn’t it? My daughter has just started letting her’s go natural and she told me the other day she can’t wait for it to be like mine. She’s 37 now and I think maybe by the time she’s 40 it will be all silver. We’re still working on getting her pics for the newbies.

You will LOVE being a grandma! It’s the best and I’m sure you’ll be a beautiful one. My grandchildren are a big part of keeping me young. Do you have a pic posted?

My husband is 10 years older than I am, and my step-daughter and I are VERY close!  We are both so excited about the baby!  She and her hubby are just very far away!

Hi Dede, how exciting for you! I was at the birth of my granddaughter from start to finish, what an experience. I saw your pics and I think you look fabulous. Are you planning on growing it any longer? It looks great now. I’ve been back and forth many times in the last 10 years with really short cuts and then letting it grow long. I did have pin straight hair but after going through the change my hair now has lots of waves and curls to it. I was blowing it straight and then decided to just get a cut that would work with the waves and curls and now I just let it do it’s thing and I’m growing it again.

Keep us posted on the baby and I love watching everyones transitioning.

Sallee, your hair is gorgeous!  It reminds me of those multi-strand necklaces; I always heard them called liquid silver.  That’s what your hair looks like.  Congratulations on your new granddaughter.

I’ve got some pix up in the newbie section and am going to send in a few more this evening to show my progress.  I hope to have a head of gorgeous silver in the not too distant future. --- Anita

Hi Anita, thank you for the compliment! Wouldn’t it be nice if we knew before hand what our hair would look like when it started “turning”?  I could have taken a really, really great vacation, maybe two or three, with all the money I spent coloring it for 10 years. I saw your pics and I must say how much admiration I have for all the “newbies” that are letting it grow out and not cutting it all off. I just wanted it all gone ASAP so I had it chopped off. Needed two cuts but I would have never had the nerve to just grow it out and I applaud everyone who has and is doing that! And my “new” granddaughter will be 5 this coming January and I have a grandson now, as well, who will be 3 in November. I LOOOOVE being a grandma! I think all of us who have taken this incredibly brave step, especially today in this youth oriented society, have such a glow about us because we know who we are and we want to show everyone that the “little old gray haired granny” is becoming a thing of the past. I bet I’m not the only one out there who has been mistaken for their grandkids mommy instead of their grandma. I can’t wait to see your gorgeous head of silver.  Sallee

I just turned 56 and began my transition last year.  I’m also a grandma to the two cutest twin boys (2 1/2)!  I LOVE being a grandma and it was one of the reason I decided I could now go gray!  Heck - I’m a grandma - although a terribly young at heart one!

Congrats Sallee!

Hi Karen, tried to respond to you over the weekend from my phone however, the post went to Diana, so I’ll say thank you now. I also have a grandson now, who will be 3 on Nov.2. Being a grandma is the best. One of those things you can’t explain to people, they have to experience it themselves. We’re a whole new breed of “Grandmas”. No mismatched polyester for us!! Oh, and welcome to the site, it’s the best.

oooh Sallee… your hair is gorgeous and someone got it exactly right… liquid silver.  I’m still a good 5 or 6 inches from where you are at this picture, but I’m using you as my inspiration.

Posted by Lynn on 10/07 at 08:35 PM

Thank you Lynn. Are you on the site?  If you are I couldn’t find you. I cut my hair off not long after that pic was taken and kept it short for a while. Now I’m in grow mode again and I’d have to guess I’m about 5 to 6 inches away as well. We’ll grow together. wink

Sallee:

I’ll grow with you. I was just visited by a friend that I haven’t seen in nearly 2 years and all she kept saying was, “wow, it is just so dramatic”.  I’m taking it as a positive thing.  I can’t seem to get my picture uploaded ... I don’t have any individual shots of me with gray hair except one and it looks blond...!!!  Isn’t that crazy?  Before I found this site I had written a “love note to Jamie Lee Curtis” because she was the only positive Gray Haired person I could find in this world.  I felt like I was the only “other” gray haired woman in the world.  I was wrong and am I glad!  My hair has been a surprise to me… it is almost white in the front and then is very silvery and then very dark gray and my underneath it is dark blonde… BUT it is very healthy and shiny.  I have a picture of me and my darling sister and my hair is as shiny as a new dime.  It amazes me… AND it is straight.  I always had naturally wavy hair (not curly) but wavy and now it is straight.  My husband’s gray hair is kinky curly and starts at his ears and goes underneath and around… mine is the opposite… starts at the crown and underneath is dark.... oh well. But I’m digging it and like I said… I love, love, love your hair (in your picture)and that is my goal.  I just turned 57 and I’m not going to cut it (except for my bangs) until I’m 60.  Of course,if the ends start looking frayed, I’ll trim it… but that’s my challenge.  I can do it!!!  With you as my inspiration.

Posted by Lynn on 10/08 at 04:43 PM

It’s wild that you say that about making it a goal to grow it until you’re 60. I have that same goal smile I also have bangs that I have cut every four weeks, my hair grows pretty fast. But mine seems to be the opposite as I used to have straight hair and now it’s all wavy and curly so I’ve just decided to let it do it’s thing and it’s been a lot easier to deal with. Mine is dark underneath too. Yes, mine is not wiry like they say gray hair can be. My granddaughter who has hair down to her bumm likes to play with my hair, she says it’s so soft grandma. Well, I hope you can get your pic posted. This is a great site, isn’t it question

Love this site.  I feel so much better about my hair.  No one in my family has gone gray and I felt like the lone stranger.

Posted by Lynn on 10/08 at 06:31 PM

It is nice to know you’re not alone, in fact, I think our numbers grow daily and we’re really part of a huge change coming. Pretty cool. So glad you found the site. You should go and investigate some of the other blogs. So many inspirational posts. You’ll love them. cheese

Sallee,

Found your picture! I agree about the liquid silver part. I hope I will have the stick-to-itiveness this time to grow my hair that long! My SIL was the only person I had seen with long gray hair and now since finding this website...so much inspiration! Thanks for sharing your picture!

You’re welcome Mary. When I cut my hair I donated it to Locks for Love, so I’m sure it was dyed, but at least it was nice and healthy and went to a great cause. I think my hair looks different colors depending on the lighting. I think everyone’s hair does that, don’t you?

Posted by sallee on 10/17 at 11:51 AM

I want to see your new picture.  Where do I go?

Posted by Lynn on 10/17 at 08:21 PM

Sallee, I definitely agree with your statement. Depending on the lighting, what I was wearing, what kind of day it was, the moon in the seventh house wink, etc., my hair would either be really, really pretty or really, really old. I think I just need the right kind of encouragement, the kind I am finding right here. Better late than never right?

Hi Lynn, well, there’s another picture of me in the Great Grays gallery and then there is the tiny one in the members album. We SoCal Girls have our gathering today and we’ll take lots of pics.

Hi Mary, always better late than never wink

Karen, you and your Husband make such a lovely couple, and congratulations on your many accomplishments.  I remember reading a great question somewhere, just can’t remember where or when right now, anyway, here it is.... How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you were??? LOL

Posted by lulubell on 11/02 at 04:28 PM

Karen, I’m so impressed by your energy levels.

Karen, wow, I’m so impressed. You go girl!!!  Attitude is it, you are so right!

lulubell...you crack me up.

Sallee, you looked fabulous in the Halloween picture.... loved the outfit and your arm ornament… or were you his ornament?  Cool.

Posted by Lynn on 11/05 at 08:46 PM

Hi Gals - thanks for the accolades!  I have always been an active gal - from way, way back! My hubby is just the best, we’ve been together for nearly 39 years, 37 of them married.

lulubell - How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you were???  Ummmm.....35?  That’s how old I feel.  That’s not how old my BODY feels or acts sometimes, but my brain feels about 35!
