Happy Half-Birthday To Us!
We’re celebrating our 6-month birthday this June with a little makeover. Actually, just the first step of a makeover, kind of like getting your eyebrows done. You’ll notice a new story-linked line of pics on the Homepage. We’re starting with 8, we’ll be adding more. And, little by little, the Homepage will “evolve.” Sometimes, it may pop up and look a little funny, but that’s because the wizard behind the curtain is working. As the Oz boss said, “Pay no attention.” It will come together, bit by bit. But it’s kind of like transitioning. Now we’re transitioning, too! Blow the candles out—make a wish.

Well, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
I did notice the story-linked line yesterday - and then it disappeared - and yet, reappeared again! Now, I understand!
I love the fact that you began this site about the same time I began going natural! (So, let me think you did it just for me!) :o)
It’s fun watching this site evolve, as I evolve right along with it!
Okay, my wish...can I tell it? I wish my hair would grow faster! :o)

Totally cool homepage!!!
I have been out running around today since 9 a.m. What a fun party to come home to!!! Birthdays are a big thing in my house!!! We sang the birthday song...did you hear us!
Happy 1/2 Birthday GGLG!!!!
Diana, I wish you many many more wonderful Birthdays to come!

Wow--love the new home page!
Nice work, Diana, webmistress extraordinaire!

Thanks, all. We’re workin’ it. Things take many hours to “re-wire,” so the changes may not happen fast, but they’re coming. My web designer keeps mumbling something about boiling a frog. Don’t ask.
Posted by Diana Jewell on 06/01 at 10:33 PM
Can I see the pic of the frog?
Posted by elizabeth on 06/02 at 04:55 AM
Frog doesn’t qualify. He’s a Great Green.

Awe shucks…

It is my half birthday this month too! I’ll have been 6 months dye free in a couple of weeks time. Thank goodness for this site, it helps strengthen my resolve in those occasional moments of doubt about the process. Congratulations.

PS, As the site is evolving, is there a possibility of us having user icons displayed at the side of our comments? I keep forgetting who everyone is and a little photo by each name would be really useful.
Posted by Sharon on 06/03 at 03:17 PM
Happy Half-Birthday to you, too, Sharon/Moonlit! I liked your suggestion, too, about posting pictures with your comments. But it’s a bit more complicated than I realized. There has to be a stop-gap system put into place so people don’t post inappropriate pictures (Not that any of YOU would, but remember, there are lots of people out on the internet!) My web designer has promised to look into it, but the first priority right now is getting the homepage finalized. But, hey, it’s always evolving, and I will take that suggestion to heart. Thanks!

Happy, happy birthday to the “fabulatastic” GGLG site and to Moonlit_hair...a special happy birthday to you! Six months is quite a milestone.... whether it is in the life of a brand new website (kudos Diana) or making the transition to natural (hats off to you Moonlit keep on keeping on).
So cheers ladies! A toast to us for all we are and all we are yet to be!
Posted by morningstar on 06/04 at 05:17 PM
Fabulatastic???? Heeeeheeee. Love it. Yup, it really is a toast to all of us, because we are ALL facing a shining future—a future of being OURSELVES. Wish we could all raise a bit of bubbly together. OK, all together now—CLINK!
I was thinking again about Sex and the City this morning. You know how they were ALWAYS getting together over lunch and hashing out the problems du jour? Well, the Café is kind of like that. It’s our lunch spot. Heck, lunch, breakfast, 2:00 AM. . .people are always dropping in. And some of us are there.
It’s a nice feeling.

Hi Diana,
Congrats! I don’t post often and have taken pictures that I haven’t sent so I’m sort of a lurker. But I look forward to seeing how everyone is doing and GGLG is part of my daily internet routine.
The explosion of the newbies picture section over the past few months has been so cool!!.... thanks so much for putting this site up and bringing us all together-
Helen
ps I WILL send pics soon since I’m not a short hair person and am just dealing with my head one color and a ponytail of another.. Have a great weekend!!! Happy Friday to all !
Posted by Thisyear on 06/06 at 03:21 PM
Hi Thisyear! Thanks. . . I’m so glad you keep checking back with us. Lurk away all you want! But I do wish you’d send in your pics—we’d love to see what that “head one color and ponytail another” looks like. Gotta be a first!
Thanks for the weekend wishes, too. Yup, time off! More pics will post on Monday. Have a good one, yourself!
Posted by Diana Jewell on 06/06 at 09:22 PM
YaHooooooo!
You are on vacation!!! A much deserved one at that!
You give a huge amount of creative energy and time to GGLG! And that’s the wonderful things we see...can’t imagine ALL the “behind the scenes” stuff!
Hats off to you Diana! Enjoy the weekend...may the sun shine a little brighter where you are!

Diana,
I just want to thank you again for this wonderful website. I feel like it was divine intervention that lead me here. It’s so awesome and just what I needed!!!! Your book should arrive any day, and I’m so excited!!!
As your site evolves, is there any way to put a site search engine on it? Sometimes in Cafe Gray someone will mention something, and then I have trouble finding it. A search engine would help me navigate your site a little easier. Just a thought.
Thank you again from the bottom of my newbie heart!!
Posted by RunnerGal on 06/10 at 08:28 AM
Well, you’re certainly welcome, RunnerGal. Soooo glad you like it. Your suggestion is a good one, too. Afraid it will have to be on the “someday” list, though. A lot of people don’t realize that this site isn’t backed by any major corporations, so changes always come out of pocket.
That’s why things evolve a little bit at a time. But they DO! I will definitely keep this in mind.

I recently saw a post somewhere on this site which asked which celebrities you would like to see going grey. Now I can’t find it so I’m bringing the chat here. Someone mentioned Andie MacDowell and I couldn’t agree more. Every time I see her in those L’oreal Excellence ads I cringe as she denies the grey, talks about how it is ‘the colour that makes me feel younger’ and waffles on about how totally natural her hair looks. Guess what Andie, it doesn’t look natural. It isn’t natural. (Excuse the rant!)
I’d also like to see Catherine Zeta Jones with a more natural look. She is beginning to look a bit like she’s been creosoted. I’m not sure if she actually has any grey but I’m sure her hair never used to be as dark as that 20 years ago.
Who else? Nicole Kidman, I’m sure she has more than a sprinkling, Monica Bellucci (who will probably be another Italian raven to the grave) and speaking of Italians how about Sophia Loren?
Posted by Sharon on 07/02 at 04:08 AM
Hah!! I’m right with you on that one, Moonlit—that Andie MacDowell commercial gives me a royal pain. She’s just so annoying in her anti-gray-ness. You’re right, it doesn’t look natural, but stars have to protect their brand equity. Which is themselves, of course. The public gets used to you a certain way, and that’s what you’ve got to go with. It’s like being stuck in an eternal time-warp.
I agree with all your other nominees, too. At least they should show a little graceful melding of tones. Maybe not Nicole Kidman, though. I do have a pic of her showing quite a lot of white at the sides, but I wouldn’t post it. It’s just too unkind. Not only a bad hair day, a bad everything day. We all have ‘em. Sometimes we dash out like that, never thinking we’re going to run into anybody. (Of course, we always DO!) But how’d you like to have 100 paparrazi camped outside your door waiting to catch you like that? Not fair, I say. So it’s not going up on THIS site!
Jennifer Lopez was another story. She dressed up and went out like that and faced the cameras. Brave girl! And beautiful enough to be confident whatEVER her roots were doing. Like all of us, of course!

Did anyone else see the “Living Well The Second Half” supplement in today’s (July 15) LA Times? Diana is quoted in one article “The Politics of Gray Hair” and is interviewed in a second “Embracing Silver with a Sense of Style.” I haven’t been able to find either article at latimes.com so it may be that only those of us living in Los Angeles will be able to see them. Good articles too, but they missed out by not including a picture of our Great Gray Ms. Diana and more information about this fab website. Congrats Diana. And, thank you!

Hey grannycoed—thanks for finding that! And for the nice words. I’m appreciative of that article because I heard from a lot of CA people last night, so somebody noticed! But I’m with you in wishing for a full-blown feature!
Important things are happening on this site—women are coming into their own. Did you just see Debdo’s quote in the Newbies section? She said “It’s been a long time since I’ve been able to say (as I can now), “I love my hair!”
Well, that’s what this is all about! And I couldn’t be happier!

Hello Diana
I wasn’t sure where to comment so I’m doing it here… Thanks for the new article about colour and home decor. Fascinating.

Thanks, Sharon—glad you liked it. I don’t really have a place to post comments on the articles, so this is as good a place as any, and I always like to hear when someone appreciates them. So—ya gonna redecorate?
Posted by Diana Jewell on 07/19 at 07:43 PM
Wow! what fun! I found this website last week, and am reading your book. I’ve been coloring my hair myself for years, and sitting in the chair for a haircut in May, and due for a touch-up, my stylist commented on the grey and said she thought I’d look great if I let it go natural. Fortunately, I wear my hear short, and after my cut last week, almost all the color is gone. I have been getting positive comments from friends and strangers for the past month, and I’m happy that I decided to do this. I’m 61, and feel in better health and shape than in years! Now, I’d like to find some new hair products that are relatively free of harsh chemicals, and will go for new make up soon!
thanks for all the great information!

Hi Rosemary—Welcome. I have to say hooray for your stylist who actually suggested you go gray. Shows ya—the good ones have your best interests at heart. And I’m glad you’re getting good reviews all around.
If you’re looking for products without too many harsh chemicals, I’d recommend you check into the Aveda line and also PureOlogy products. Boh use botanicals and PureOlogy avoids all 26 allergens identified by the EU. You might also want to check out the article The Green Wars. Look for it under Care & Treatment> Products You Should Know About.
Have fun becoming the New You!

Hey hazey,
I certainly can. The article appeared on July 15 in the Los Angeles Times. Diana is actually quoted in two articles that day—both in the same special supplement “Living Well The Second Half.”

Hi - This is my first post. I am so thrilled to have found a site that supports us going ‘natural’. I am 5 months along (sounds like I’m pregnant...) I do feel really good about my decision. It does feel incredibly liberating. The flip side is that I been inclined to not be as social. It is worse when I see my friends or colleagues and they don’t say ANYTHING when it is so obvious to me. It’s a little like having a limp and people looking the other way! (No offense to anyone handicapped)
Anyway, love the website and all the folks posting. It is really interesting and fun to read the posts....
Posted by silvernotgray on 08/08 at 09:56 PM
Welcome silvernotgray! Glad you’re “5 months along!” Your comment about not feeling like being social reminds me of a teenager who gets braces and then doesn’t want to be with her friends. For awhile. Next thing you know, she’s forgotten she even has them. It’s the same way with gray. Heheh—I’m sure you’ve read the postings about the “silent treatment”—they’re all over, in Friends & Family, in Newbies, etc. Lots of people apparently think graying is an affliction, never to be discussed. I keep saying I’m going to have those buttons made up—“It’s OK to Talk About my Gray!”. In the meantime, no harm in bringing it up yourself. Some have. . .

Hi silvernotgray (great name!)
I am almost completely transitioned and barely anyone outside my family has said a word. They watch with a mix of horror and fascination, but say nothing. I do think some are just in awe that I have the “nerve” to go against the grain of society and...gasp… not hide my gray hair!
Well, welcome to your reprieve from the non-approving world of hair colourers! Hope to see your progress in a photo sent in to Diana so you can join us in the Newbie gallery!

Welcome Silvernotgray! I’m only 3 months along in this process. I feel the same way you do about the silent treatment. The other day a waiter was talking to me, and his eyes kept darting up to my hair. I just KNEW he was thinking that I’d let myself go. While I won’t say anything to a stranger, I almost always bring it up with people I know. I’d rather have it out in the open. I want people to know that this is a deliberate choice I’ve made, not laziness. Good luck in your transitioning. I always recommend to people new to the site to post your pictures in the newbie section. It’s a great way to stay accountable in those weak moments.

I’m so excited I found this website! I knew going gray would be difficult, but I never knew it could be this stressful! Thankfully there’s a place to turn for some support and encouragement. I am definatley interested in becoming a newbie.
Posted by candi on 08/31 at 01:49 PM
Hello you all. I like to react on this comments; i also have stress from going gray, and i am very thankfully for this site! Good support is half of the job...Where i live exist no such site as this.(i live in Holland)
My plan is now to wait until i have 2 or 3 inches outgrow and then cut the dye off...So i wish my hair grows fast!
