Oh my! Absolutely GORGEOUS hair!!!

Thank you Elizabeth for telling your story and thank you Diana for posting it for us to enjoy!!!

I have determined to keep with this though I only have about 1 1/2 inches of natural color right now...but I must say at times I still question if I’m going to look old and tired. Elizabeth does NOT look OLD OR TIRED!!! She absolutely glows!!!

I realize I’m older and I don’t think my color is as white, but I’m going for the gray.

Elizabeth, POW!! is right!!  You should be a model!!  You’re definitely a role model for me, that’s for sure.  You make it very cool for young women like me who are gray to keep their gray.  You’ve got me thinking about growing my hair out.  Way to go girl!!!

What a wonderful family you have.  I loved the picture of you with really short, cropped hair.. You look about 15 years old.. How long did it take to grow your hair to it’s current length?  Years, I’m sure.  Well, keep it up, girl… it’s beautiful, and so are you.

I think I might owe my children some credit for a few of my grey hairs I had cut it all off the fall of 2004 and made a promise to myself that I would not cut it, other than a trim, until I was 40. I turn 40 this July and this is the longest my hair has ever been my whole life...and the whitest...LOL Most of the time you see shorter grey hair styles!! Not fair...so any of you closet hippies out there...I say “let it grow”

Love the long hair, it is absolutely gorgeous. I agree that we don’t see enough long haired grays. When I turned 30, I got static from co-workers about cutting my hair because even though I was coloring it, they thought it was wrong for anyone over 30 to have long hair.

Now that I am transitioning to gray and am doing a dramatic two tone grow out with my still long hair, I have people assuming I am growing it out just an inch or two more before cutting it all off because of course I wouldn’t dare to keep it long and gray. Wrong they are....who says gray hair has to be short?

Okay Keri, I agree with you. You are getting me going on a pet peeve of mine. While growing up, long before age 30, my mom always was saying, “Noone over 30 should have long hair.” Since I always loved medium to long hair, I dreaded turning 30. When I turned 29 I went into mourning...wondering what I would do about my long hair. Well, I kept it! That is what I did about it! :o) Now I am 44 and I have been the only woman in my family to keep longer hair. A couple of years ago my sister’s husband even asked me, “When are you going to cut your hair like the rest of the women in your family?” I said, “Probably never.”

And now as you said, I am hearing opinions that gray hair must be kept short. I have an inch and a half of my natural gray so far, and though I have gotten many inches cut off my hair for trasition (barely touches my shoulders with shorter layers all over, yet still not really short) I fully intend to grow my hair when the color is gone. My stylist says it will probably be 4 1/2 months. I’m thinking more like 6 months, sadly.

Elizabeth and many others are showing everyone that gray hair can be beautiful at any length. And just think Keri, in time WE will be showing them as well!

Well, need to go wash my hair and give it the daily pep talk, “Grow hair, GROW!”

I think it all depends on who you are and how comfortable you are with yourself.  Elizabeth looks absolutely stunning with that long gorgeous gray hair, therefore, she’s comfortable in it.  I have short curly gray hair and I’m comfortable in it.  Change is good, but change should come when we’re ready for it, not when a relative or co-worker says we should do it.  That relative or co-worker isn’t the one combing, shampooing, or styling our hair, we are.  I said that to say this: be who you are and be proud!!!

I’m 55 and after reading your story, 56 actually sounds exciting...never thought I’d be thinking that way!I’m looking forward to a new more natural look and similarly I’m ready to let go of my fake auburn hair. Hi! I believe with ALL of my heart that if we are able to embrace who we are. Not get caught up in the endless exausting battle of trying to hide and conform to the “social standard” of; who should have grey hair...what age is appropriate for grey hair...what length it should or should not be…
If it brings the feeling of strength,vitality, and freedom...Ladies it’s a “Martha Moment”! “IT,S A GOOD THING” It’s not our deal if people out there are “color blind” when it comes to this “crown of glory” we call our hair!!! This wonderful,sparkling,shimmering unique hair! It’s one of our beautiful assets that sets us apart!

P.S I massage my head once a week with organic sweet almond oil...I like to believe that its helped stimulate the scalp and hair folicle so it will grow faster an keep my hair from getting too brittle (I have no scientific research or documentation LOL;-)

Elizabeth you look great!  For all of you, this is my first post.  I’m 54, have been gray since early 20’s but coloring.  I have tried in the past to go gray but couldn’t follow through.  This time, I’m 7 wks. into it with about 3/4 inch roots, had lowlights 2 wks. sgo instead of an all over color as I had been having.  My question is: how do you mentally deal with the roots, stripes, etc.  I had someone ask me about my stripe at church this morning.  Have you found a way to soften the color to blend better with roots?  Just any info you can give would help me.  I don’t think I am 100% sure right now.  Need opinions and support, please.

Particularly, look under Playing the Waiting Game, and What Are You Afraid Of? You’ll find an on-going discussion there, and lots of GOOD advice from Members who are going through exactly what you’re going through—“skunk stripe” and all. Good Mornin’ Everyone!

I really want to encourage both Lori and Karen. I remember the excitement that I felt when I finally decided to let the gray “grow free”...then came the comments and looks from others. It’s hard to hide the transition and at times I would actually feel really uncomfortable in social settings, then I’d start to question if I was doing the right thing(even though the decision was made for me due to my PPD). I think the gray challenges a social stigma… gray = tired/old. Well...I am not old( age is overrated)...and I am a natural gray! The sweetest reward that I received from my “hair” transformation was the inner strength that grew from this whole experience! I have NO regrets...I feel free!! I’m no longer on “root watch”! I finally “own” who I am and how I look. It feels right...it feels good! So...when you beautiful ladies have those “off” days...keep your head up! The reward is in the journey...it’s worth the trip

So far I haven’t had any negative comments. A few people have noticed the roots, but when I explain what I’m doing they usually say good for you! When the weather starts to warm up, I’ll be wearing a french braid, I can french braid my own hair, or baseball cap and ponytail. Which is not out of the norm for me in the summer. I doubt I’ll go super short as I don’t look good with short hair. But then again I will never say never! LOL!

Thank God for the good ole’ baseball cap! I love that you can french braid your hair too!!! What color had you been coloring it prior to growing it out? You sound like you have a beautiful head of hair! Mine was so fried from the “final” dye job that I had received...there was no way to deal with it other than to shave it off! Not to mention the blisters… Nooo fun!

My hair was medium to dark brown. Diana addedmy pictures to the Newbies page.And just below shoulder length. I lives in baseball caps in the summer when I’m in the yard or taking my daily walks.

Hi Elizabeth - Even with your hair at the shortest stage, you looked absolutely beautiful!  How short did you go?

I’m at the point now where I have about 1” of silver root and the rest is brown with silver now being exposed on the sides(my hair is fairly short).  I’m getting tired of trying to conceal the silver with ColorMark - it’s just becoming too much of a job every day.  I feel like I have a rug on top and when the wind blows, all the gray underneath is really obvious now.  It just looks ridiculous!  I am very near to “bringing it down to the wood” (to quote your husband)and being done with it. 

I look at your picture as well as some of the other ladies and hope that I can find the courage to do “the chop”. I’m just afraid of being much too self-conscious.  Did you feel that way?

Good morning Christine,

I was “forced” into not dying my hair, I had a pretty severe allergic reaction and due to my personality(all or nothing) I shaved the back and left just a little hair around my face and on top. The first “cut” I did myself...I was soooo mad that the PPD happened to me! So..I had a hair tempertantrum! I had been “hiding” my gray since I was in H.S. and I was terrified that I was going to age over night!

Well...there was no other way for me, than to just go for it...so I did. I loved having my “power cut” It was soooo easy!! I would keep it “soft cut” around my face and pull pieces down to frame my face. I used a gel from Aveda and it gave my hair the look of “semi-wet”. It actually looked really cool on the top with the multi tone effect. The biggest worry that I had was that I no longer looked feminine… That was my BIGGEST hangup!

So...I spent more time on doing my eyes and my lips when I put on my makeup! I changed some of my clothing style...showed more of my neck and wore more whimsical tops. It definately at times was very trying for me...I just wanted it to grow

Still to this day I use only my fingers when I “comb” through my hair...I don’t blow dry it and very rarely do I flat iron. I got in that habit when I was only using gel when it was super short, never changed. I think that it’s another reason why may hair is sooo healthy.

A LOT of wonderful things transformed in my heart during the whole process...It was well worth it!

Christine’s post echoes my feelings exactly. I have said much the same on the Cafe Gray section already today. Elizabeth’s pictures were the first ones I saw when I found this site a couple of days ago and the impetus I needed to make the decision to go natural. Then again she would even look good with a bag over her head.
Her dramatic hair chop was a necessity.
However this seems to be the big dilemma for people who prefer longer hair to feel like themselves. If you go for the close crop you skip the multicoloured tartan look but then need the patience of a saint to wait maybe for years to get the length back to where you want it to be. It seems to be a question of weighing up the pros and cons- longer hair makes me FEEL right whereas short hair makes me LOOK right.
For me, the jury is still out on this one.

My husband is very nervous too about this grey issue but I showed him your pics and he mellowed.  Thing is he wants me now to go from shoulder length to pixie look and I’m having difficulty finding if I can. Hmmmmm....Do it get to color my paper bag, if I am going to wear one...I must decorate it

O.k. let’s do some “brain storming” ladies… Maria you sound like you have wonderfully long hair! Christine your hair sounds about shoulder length. So...lets make a plan!!!!

Have either of you looked into doing some highlites just around your face? Is there anyway to foil some lighter shades in the front...who cares about the back! If you do foiling, find someone who is good at it and knows how to take fine sections...not big chunks! The goal is to gently weave a more subtle light color...focus around the face and on where you part your hair. Stay away from coloring the unseen areas, then as your hair continues to grow out you can get fewer and fewer foils. If the goal is to keep your length you might need to do some higher maintenance type things to get to where you want to be...which is au natural

Christine, after my hair grew out a year, the fall of 2005 I could get a tiny ponytail in the back of my head!! I mean it was tiny!I used tiny barretts to help hide the little pieces that would come out of the pony. I purchased hair pieces...the kind that are on 2 wires and a comb. You put the comb under the little pony and wrap the 2 haired wires around the pony. It makes it look like you have shoulder lenght hair that is pulled up to a sassy style! I LOVED using those hair pieces!!!They were the coolist!! It helped me greatly with my transition back to longer length hair.

I bet Diana has some great tips too! She’s like a walking resource book...a very pretty one AT THAT

Thank you so much for responding so quickly. I actually only have shoulder length hair but I am loathe to part with it. I am due a visit to the hairdressers in a few weeks so I’ll discuss highlights with her. If she even dares to suggest fighting the grey I’ll refer her to you!!
Since stumbling on this site on Monday I feel like I have new pals in you and Diana, albeit half way round the world, so don’t worry I won’t be knocking on your door for a chat and a cup of tea.

And constantly being interrupted by my kids(who are ALL on spring break)

Maria, since you have shoulder length hair can you go a couple of inches shorter(layering too) and do those hairpieces that I mentioned...the ideal situation is to stay away from coloring/highlighting. If your hair is thick, they can do some soft-cutting and texturing deeper into the hair length which could take out some of the harsh two tone look. How much gray has grown out so far?

Elizabeth - My hair is actually about 3” all around, cut out around my ears - I guess you could say pixie length. This is really short for me.  There is some white coming down the sides, which doesn’t really bother me.  I have about 1” of gray and 2” of brown all around.  I’m just afraid of how severe it will look at 1”.  But as I had said, I would be done with it.  I feel like I am talking about my hair way too much - I have never spent so much time obsessing about it.  It’s crazy!

I talked to my hairdresser about lightening sections, but she feels just keep on with the haircuts every 4 weeks and no color.

You are just wonderful to take the time to respond and to make all of your great suggestions.  I will let you know when (did I say that???) I “bring it down to the wood” (I just love your husband’s expresssion)!!

There’s nothin’ like a man with a great sense of humor!! 

Let me share something that I feel strongly about… Our hair is our CROWN...it’s one of the HUGE things that defines who we are...it sets us apart from others, it’s one of our unique personal signatures.

So, to be on this “journey” of transformation, I think that it’s normal to have some trepidation and anxiety about the whole thing! Some of it is cultural, some social, and some is just plain fear of the unknown. It’s O.K. to want to talk it through...Thank God for giving Diana the “vision” to do this website! We have a place to talk/vent!

We need one another...Talk on!

So now...about your hair length. I really have a belief that it’s all in the cut when you are growing out your hair. I had mine SUPER short(shaved) in the back and close to shaved on the sides and had a little more to play with on the top in front and just a little longer by the sides of my face. I wanted to create the soft “framing” effect around my cheeck bones and eyes.

For me...it was “all or nothing” even though I was scared outa my mind and MAD! There was something totally freeing in just “going for it”...It grows back beautifully!

It is a huge lesson in patience...something I have struggled with my whole life. Nothing about the process hurt me...it strengthened me, increased my determination and self-discipline. Yea...I have had my moments of weakness, soon to be turning 40 has stirred up some insecurities, I can’t even begin to express how much this website and the women here have changed my perspective!

It’s amazing where and how we go about getting our “iron will”.

Start looking at haircuts...find a good stylist that is gifted in cutting your hair to what fits your face and your hair texture...not the “trend” cut. Cuz if your hair is happy...you’ll be happy...and it’ll show in your face

Hi Christine - Hope you don’t mind my chiming in.  I went through the same thing.  I won’t go into all the detail here, but I only had about 1/2” of growth when I cut off all my dyed hair.  My hands were trembling.  I couldn’t believe how emotional I was about my HAIR!  I was in tears.  I thought I was going to throw up.  It was awful, those first few, pitiful moments after I lobbed a hunk off the top of my head.  But I just kept on cutting and pretty soon all the brown was gone.  Of course, other than my bangs and the fringe around my face, so was all my hair.  I went out with my husband and on that first hairless excursion I was approached by a woman who complimented me on such beautiful silver hair.  And she liked my cut.  She said it was elegant.  ???????  Wow.  Talk about a mood swing.  I went from feeling like a death camp survivor to a movie star in about a heartbeat.  Regardless of what you decide to do, cutting it off or dealing with the roots, it’s going to take a LOT of guts and determination.  Take a look at the photos on this website.  Each of these women had to go through this.  Then look at how beautiful and radiant they are.  You will be too.

I don’t get flustered or upset about bad hair cuts. I guess its because I took cosmetology in high school as a vocational class, but bad hair cuts or color just doesn’t faise me! Just last summer my I ended up with a hair cut that was much shorter than I wanted and uneven to boot. Turns out the stylist had just finished school! Anyway, I came home and evened it out my self, played with it until I found a way to style it that I liked. It barely touched my shoulders at that time and that was in early June of ‘07. As you can see by my photo’s in the newbie section, my hair is down to the bra strap line mid back. And I had it cut 2” back in Nov. My hair grows pretty fast.

If I thought I could get away with it Id do a short spikie cut, but because I’m on the heavier side Im afraid I may look to masculine with it.

Elizabeth looked STUNNING with the short haircutbut she has petite features.

Hi everybody—I love the way the conversation is flowing here—everybody helping everybody.  That’s just what I imagined when I started this site. But let me chime in here for both Maria and Christine.  Maria—a pixie cut can be very feminine, especially if you leave it a bit longer on top. And you may find that it emphasizes your features in a new way, especially around the eyes. It will feel long, because you can tousel the top, or bring it forward and to the side. You can slick back the sides with gel, or bring little pointy pieces around the face. It gives you a lot of variety—every day you can try something new. Since this whole thing is a new adventure, take full advantage of it, and play!

Christine—you may still have those 2” of brown for awhile, but they’ll be gone before you know it. Every cut appointment, a little more and a little more will be gone.  But—“cutting it down to the wood,” as Elizabeth and 12Green did, is a whole different story. As you can tell from their comments, it’s very emotional. If you’re not DEEPLY committed to doing that, don’t. Your courage can be expressed in another way—in patience. And, with a short pixie cut, I promise you—it won’t take that long. You’re really almost “home free.” It’s just that you can’t see the forest for the trees—or the silver for the brown! It’s best to always take one step, give it awhile to “sink in,” before doing anything more drastic.

When—and if—it gets to the point where you say “I just can’t stand it anymore, it’s gotta go,” you’ll know. And that’s the only time when you’ll be really happy with the results. Elizabeth had to—her scalp was badly burned. 12Green chose to because she had reached that point, and also because of career considerations. Shira (see Shira’s Story) chose to shave her head because she felt all the years of dyeing had left her hair unhealthy. They all showed tremendous courage, and I think they share an “all or nothing” philosophy. But you’re not any less courageous if you choose to do it another way.

You have to ask yourselves—am I at that point? If not, take a deep breath, cut it a little bit shorter, and wait.  You CAN do it! Hugs to you both, D.

Amen - Diana you are right on point!  It is an individual decision and it’s important for the person to be ready.  While I wish I had had the courage to chop right away (and wish even more this site had been available during the process) baby steps suited my comfort level.  After toughing it out with long hair for the first 10 months...it took me to near the end to go for the Katie Holmes length and I love it - now - might not have so much then.

All I can say to Christina, Maria and the others is hang on you’ll get there your own way and you are in for many pleasant surprises on the journey! Brave to chop - yes!  Brave to tough it out with root growth - you bet! Whether you choose evolution of revolution - doesn’t matter.

I have been kept away from full participation here lately with work and pc issues but I love the way this forum has grown and read the new posts everyday - can’t wait to jump back in regularly.

Note on a prior post - Maria - you got a good tip - Ouidad is awesome for curly haired gals. If you don’t live in NY their website can refer you to a local operator trained in the Ouidad method and offering their product line.

Good morning ladies
Just read all the latest posts.  Lots of food for thought there. The sense of camaraderie is so strong and I much appreciate it. I have decided for the meantime to play the waiting game and let the process lead me.
This decision alone is a revelation for me as I usually feel obliged to be the leader and take responsibilty, even when I don’t want to.

Morningstar- thanks for suggestion re. Ouidad. I don’t live in the USA but I will check out website for products.

Elizabeth- on re-reading my earlier post, I realise the comment about you looking good even with a bag over your head could have been misconstrued. It was meant to be an acknowledgement of your good looks.  Note to self- be careful, Scottish humour might not translate easily into American culture!! We do a great line in sarcasm but it is not meant to be nasty.

Diana- just received notification my book has been put in the post.  Looking forward to its arrival.

Ladies,

I am just in awe of all the support/advise/suggestions that you ladies have given me. In my eyes, Elizabeth and 12Green what you did was really gutsy (I know that some don’t like to hear that word)!  I know for you Elizabeth, your choice was made for you.

I guess the past couple of days, I’ve been feeling an urgency to do something because we are going away at the end of the month and I don’t want to be bothered with trying to hide the gray areas.  It would be so much easier to just get it all cut off - but can I live with that?  I don’t know.  I’m trying to take into account all the sage advise everyone has offered and make my decision.

Diana, thank you for this wonderful forum that you have created - it has been such a comfort to know that you are not alone in this scary process. 

I do know one thing for sure, I wouldn’t think of going back the other way, and that’s big for me! So thanks Ladies!  I’ll get some pics together and send them in!

Awe shucks...I LOVE friendly banter or should I say “witt”. I thought it was funny and...I thought “long and hard” on my comeback

Had I not had PPD I might have found this site YEARS down the road! Had I been able to blend the gray while growing it out...I would have...I am one of “those girly girls...” I love playing “dress-up”, it was a heart wrenching thing for me to “loose my hair”

I now realize I didn’t “loose” anything!!! I won a new perspective on the character of who I am...what truly is valuable to me. I’m glad that the PPD happened when it did...I am able to grow in the experience while I’m still young/young at heart!

There are so many cute shorter cuts out there! Remember the “Hillary Swank” cut...she went from super long to super short! There’s a playfullness and a sassy feeling that you get when your hair is short...not shaved, but short and playfull.
Your heart will lead you on this one...You’ve already taken the “biggest step”!

Okay, Elizabeth....it’s all your fault. :o) Here you sit with your long, beautiful, silver hair; all the while tempting everyone. Just kidding, of course.

But really, we “transitioners” have to remind ourselves that there is no quick miracle to this. Unfortunately, we cannot walk into a salon with multi-colored hair and come out with a long head of silver hair. Elizabeth paid her price and now we must pay ours. But in the whole scope of our lives, it really isn’t such a long time. Patience is a great virtue and it probably does all of us some good to acquire more or it. 

I love Diana, and this site, and all the ladies who are very supportive...but really, we all have to find our unique ways to transition. We have different personalities with different life-styles. There is no pressure to do it any certain way. Let’s simply be who we are, and one day we will find ourselves looking great in our own unique shade of silver.

We live in such a world of instant gratification that we expect things to happen instantaneously. I know when I started out in this process, I guess I was pretty naive and thought my hairdresser could just put something on my hair to bring it my natural gray.  Boy, was I in for a surprise.  I thought about it 7 years ago and just couldn’t go through with it.  In this day and age, this process just seems so primitive! 

It truly is a lesson in patience!!

You are so right!

I coach for the High Schools here in town and the “instant gratification” mentality is a problem. I live /coach by the motto,"no pain...no gain”. Sometimes it takes YEARS of really hard work to attain the goals that they have set, some give up way to soon.
They miss out on the priveldge of being able to look back and see how far they have come.  I guess for us..."pain" doesn’t mean physical as much as it is emotional.

I also couldn’t agree with you more about the “primitive” comment! We can put the man on the moon...but we can’t seem to duplicate and capture the beauty of natural gray...isn’t that amazing! Every other color can be duplicated! But Gray… has to come from within!  Now there’s a “thought for the day"(though that silverizing looks pretty cool)! But I think that it’s used after the gray has already been established.

Ahhhh Patience...1 word means sooo much!

O.K. as I am trying to survive this snowy weekend, here in the middle of a Blizzard...and I’m not talking ice cream! I started to really dig into Diana’s book…

I realize now… that the color gray can be duplicated. The hard part is knowing the pattern of how the gray is growing out!  Is it just gray in the front? Is it “salt and pepper” through out...It’s an artform to say the least to be able to weave the color gray with the natural gray that is trying to be FREE from hair dyes!

Everytime I pick up Diana’s book or toodle around on gglg it’s an adventure in itself

Hi Elizabeth --
You’re right—it is an artform to enhance gray, and that’s why the pros have lots of tricks up their sleeves—like highlighting, lowlighting, glazing, color weaving, etc. But duplicating gray? Not really. If a woman only wants a certain percentage of gray in her hair—and no more—she’ll usually have some kind of a color process. Otherwise, if she wants to go completely gray, it’s almost impossible to achieve unless the hair is stripped of color. Gray and silver are light shades—so you’ve gotta get most of the color out of your hair. And then, of course, you’ll have the roots—in reverse. Dark roots and silver strands. Not a good solution! 

If your hair is already pretty white to begin with, you can still enhance it by weaving in subtle highlights, or lowlights, to make it a little more dramatic. But all this is best left in the hands of a good colorist. Hope this is clearer. D.

Elizabeth, can I ask you a question? Talking about “enhancing” and “duplicating” I wondered if in the holiday 2007 photo, if you had the hair around your face lightened or was this the way in which your hair decided to transition? All your photos are amazing; it just struck me that in this particular photo there seemed more lightness around your face. I met someone the other day who over the years let her hair go salt and pepper. She decided she wanted more salt just around her face so she sees a colorist 3 times a year to lighten just that area. It looks terrific on her.

Good Morning Shara,

Due to PPD,I am unable to use any colorant in my hair. Sometimes my hair catches natural light in a picture and it sets the silver around my face on “fire” and it looks really bright.

I am 90% white/silver around my face and about 70-75% gray at the back of my head. I have been fortunate as to how my gray/silver has grown out. I sure would like to see more of the silver start to come in towards the back, but at least I have it where I can see it

I love the concept of “silverizing” and “enhancing”. I loved the before and after makeovers in Dianas book. It’s an artform for sure to know how to “enhance” the silver. I bet your friend just glows! We get hair cuts to “frame” our face...if you can “enhance” the silver color around your face, I say “go for it”.

Thanks Greeneyes..it was a lot of fun! 
It sure didn’t take very long, I wrapped my hair dry in those little pink sponge curlers and left them in for about 45min. (I was to impatient to wait any longer) The only thing I would do different is put some product in my hair before I rolled it… the curls came out within a few hours.

Gotta play...no matter what the length...I think of it as a fun adventure!

Elizabeth, I love that curly look of yours. The positive about long hair is that it gives you more options. I know during my transition I’ll be going shorter lengths to help speed the process though down the line, I know I’ll want to go back to my below the shoulder length hair. I agree with the other ladies who have shared that you don’t have to be a teenager or in your twenties to have long hair....you do what works for you! Thank you for sharing your journey as it truly helps us all.

Hi there Shara!!

Hey...I just read your “coffee” story! Boy I tell ya...there a few out there that are “colorblind”! I was just doing some “history” reading (hidden hobby;-) and “white” hair was a sign of wealth!  The “wigs” and the white powder for hair...Marie Antionette!
If I’m not mistaken the lawyers in England still wear the silver/white wigs to court!
So...get fiesty...empowered...wear your silver “crown” with pride
As for the “long vs short” I say that we are “trail blazers” bringing a whole new look,confidence, and class to gray!
Hair pieces are a great way to transition back to longer hair...helps keep the “my hair isn’t growing fast enough” blues away.
I agree with you, I don’t plan on “letting myself go” anytime soon either!

Yep...I agree...and it’s also time consuming to set all those rollers!

But, I also like to play and try new things...it’s a great way to do something just for me, and my girls love to play around with hair too. It was a fun “hair” adventure for a couple of hours
My girls have been wanting to put a bunch of braids in my hair...that could be interesting when I take them out!

Ohhh… thank you for your sweet compliments!

I liked having the short croppy cut but I love having it the length that it is now. I’m not a “fan” of the different stages you go through when trying to grow it from short to long.

I remember thinking..."If I can just push it back behind my ears"… “if I can just get it into a little tiny ponytail so I can attatch a hair piece"..."if it would just grow out long enough that I gets past my chin”...and so the story goes!

I had a friend who made me promise that I would not cut my hair until I was 40...no exceptions other than the routine trim! At times, it was that promise that kept me on the path of growing it out.  I turn 40 this summer...and for the very first time in my life I have long hair!!!

So, as you start to grow out your silver locks you have a “kindred spirit” cheering you on!  I look forward to hearing the “hair milestones”

Elizabeth - Speaking of growing out hair - right now I can only get a scrawny ponytail, and most of my hair won’t reach it. :o) I thought I would cut my hair quite short for transitioning, but don’t think I want to go any shorter. It may sound crazy, but I miss having to brush my hair out of my eyes, or off my face, or feeling my hair on my shoulders. I’ve had medium to long hair most of my life and guess it’s just the way I like it. After transitioning, I will let mine grow out to at least shoulder length.

It’s funy how we like what we like! Either long or short, or somewhere in between.

Most of my life my hair was shorter than the pic. that is shown with my hair auburn...I just did not have the patience to let it grow past my shoulders.

I’m sure that you are definately counting the months for your hair to be on it’s way to medium/long! Your hair looks like it has a wonderful texture to it...I can’t wait to see the silver flow
Does your hair grow fast? I really believed for 30+ years that I could not grow long hair...I thought it was too thin and fine to grow (at least that is what I had been told).
My hair stylist says that I have more to grow if I want to! I do...I do! Maybe I can get another 6 inches outa my head.

When you had long hair what did you do to keep the ends from “stressing and breaking”? I’ve been using the Ojon product that Diana has mentioned and Aveda “Blue Malva” to keep the “yellow tones” at bay. I also have the brush that Diana mentions in the product section and I LOVE it...Just 2 days ago I purchased a round brush from Aveda and it has worked wonders when I want to pull my hair straight. It has almost eliminated my need for a flat iron, I might use the flat iron on a couple of pieces...but that’s about it. The texture of my hair is “fine” so I think that helps too.

One more thing...If I could have transitioned without cutting my hair super short...adding hightlights to soften the “skunk line” I would have! I think that there are some great “blending” options out there...just need to find a stylist who is an “artist” when it comes to highlighting/blending. I went “down to the wood” because of my allergic reaction...no blending for me
I’m amazed at how fast the transition went for Carol! She didn’t go super short and she had been coloring black! I think she focused more on layering. It sounds to me like that is what you have been doing...layering…

Yes, I am anxious to say good-bye to all the dye and GROW!!!

My hair texture can be frustrating...my hair is thick and then coarse to boot. I have some wave and frizz, though not enough curl to let it go natural. Think bushy. :o) I keep layers, whether long or short, to help with this. I have learned to enjoy my hair, but there is no way it would be as straight or smooth as yours. I think the flat iron will be my friend for life. :o) That is, unless the hair of the 80’s returns - I am really good at big hair!

My hair does grow quickly, which is a good thing, especially now!

I never had a problem with the ends splitting or breaking; but I kept my hair shorter than yours. My “before” picture is the length I typically kept, and I got regular trims.

My stylist wasn’t open to doing anything but lowlighting for my transition. In the beginning I thought she was being obstinate, but have come to realize she is smart! I have a lot of dark left, and it really helped match my natural dark brown. I truly forgot how dark my hair really is. Since my gray is going to be dark, my hair hasn’t looked really obvious from a distance. You have to be fairly close to see the color difference; sort of like being unable to tell if someone is wearing black or navy until you get close. So, even though I have been whiney at times, my transition really hasn’t been too difficult.

I agree! I was surprised how quickly Carol transitioned! Very inspirational!

So, you’re going another 6 inches! How fun! Guess you started growing and can’t stop! :o) I plan to go back to my “before” length, unless I end up like you and can’t stop!

I have definately had those “wobble” days too! I have to say I don’t like those days very much. Those days became less and less as I embraced my own style, I tend to gravitate to an eclectic/free spirit style of clothing and look.
I’ve loved and have been inspired by seeing the pics of the 50+ generation. I even have the picture of “Dame Helen” pinned up at my computer(it’s in the current issue of people magazine).

At any age we can have beautiful hair...skin...body...it’s how we take care of ourselves and more importantly how WE see ourselves. I can honestly say that I am not “afraid” of aging any longer...I am excited.

Even when I look through all the pictures that have been submitted, I really believe that the gray/silver is so attractive and striking! The amazing part, is the natural glow and youthfullness that you can see on everyones face!

Sharon, you look beautiful!!!!

Youthfullness is not something we put on...it is what we allow to be freed from inside our heart!

What a fun surprise to come “home” to!! Gosh...it’s amazing how much “sunshine” a couple of kind comments/words can bring to your day! Thanks for making my day that much brighter!

I’ve been chasing my kids around for the past few days...this of course includes the “crisis” of the kitty that was found and needed a place to stay until my daughter and her friends found it a home! And lets not forget that they ALL needed to stay overnight so they could ALL keep an eye on it!    It’s been quite a summer....hehehehe

A belated happy 40th, Elizabeth!  You make 40 look amazing.  I’m past that particular milestone, myself.  About to hit 43 with all natural colour for the first time since I was 18!  Can’t wait.  I truly hope my hair has some more growing in it..I had the longest hair I ever had at age 27 and, like you, didn’t think I could/should grow it long at “this age.” But I’m gonna give it a try...Thanks again for the inspiration!

Thank you everyone for the “happy birthdays”! 

I’ve been a little outa the GGLG loop for awhile and soooooo much has happened around here!!!

I’ve seen incredible “newbies” haircuts and new “newbies”! Not to mention the GREAT vacation pictures! I wish I could fit into everyones luggage! Awesome video of Diana! All of you look amazing! It’s exciting to see and feel like a part of this amazing group of women!

I have been trying to catch up on all the “chats” too!   That’s a huge task! It’s really a privilege to read the heart felt and fiesty support that you all have and give to one another~ It truly does take a village to raise a “Great Gray”! And...we are all the better for it!

This past year, I have been experiencing an “awakening” in my life! It’s been humbling, amazing, and overwhelming at times...but I can honestly say that I have never felt so alive and present!

I still have those days too...They go right a long with the “I feel fat” days!
I think that we are exposed to a huge amount of pressure to be and look a certain way. It’s hard at times not to let it affect us!
I guess that’s one of the main reasons why it takes a “village” to raise a Great Gray!

Hi Elizabeth, you are so right about the pressure to look a certain way. I was always the odd ball , so the gray hair has been just one more way I’ve always “stuck out” from the crowd. Did any of you notice the forum on the MORE website about going gray? I added my two cents worth and gave the GGLG website. Now I’m going to go vote again.

Ah yes, the beat of the different drummer, I know it well. I do believe we’re part of a huge change taking place and it’s really exciting! This is actually the first website I’ve ever really felt comfortable posting on. There is just such a connection with all of you. And you’re right about it being hard to keep up with everything going on here!Actually, Diana posted on the More blog about going gray and then I saw anothter woman had mentioned the site as well. I just went on to vote and you have the second most votes. It says they’re updated every 2 hours. You should enter their 40+ model search. It seems they always pick someone closer to 40 as the winner but I don’t believe they’ve ever given it to a woman with “gray” hair. They always include one in the runner-ups but never the winner. You are gorgeous and it would be so great to see you win and represent all of us Silver Sirens, Glamourous Grays, Wicked Whites and all the fabulous variations thereof!

It’s a good thing I love to dance...I’m groovin and movin to that drum beat all the time! I agree with you about this site...I had NEVER blogged or chatted on line B4 finding GGLG, there is a really sweet “sisterhood” here, and I love it! I too put in a comment and mentioned GGLG in the More blogg on Gray Hair.
Diana has been the “pebble” in the still waters! The ripple effect that it has had on our lives is simply amazing!!!I know that this site has made a huge impact in my life!
Thank you for your encouragement and generous compliments! I grew up the “ugly duckling” and saw myself that way until I was well into my 30’s. I have come a long way in how I see myself. The 1st thing that started the “healing” process was going gray! I’m going to be forever grateful for that allergic reaction that I had...that experience began the journey of learning how to embrace who I am!

Elizabeth, This past weekend I was with a friend I hadn’t seen in fourteen years. She loved my gray hair and thought I actually looked younger than I did way back when I was a young mother. I will post my picture soon and hope it will make someone else’s transition easier. Every time I tell someone about this site, I tell them to look for your pictures. Elizabeth, you sound like my daughter, Jennifer. She was a swan in waiting. In fact I wrote a piece about her and in it talk about her transition from ugly duckling to the beautiful swan she is and she still has a hard time seeing herself that way.  I have to get her pictures up since she is letting her hair go natural. It will be really fun for me to watch it as I didn’t get the chance to watch mine naturally transition. I’m curious how long it will take for her to be completely gray, as she is not growing out a color, it’s just her hair changing naturally.  And I know what you mean about getting confused with the screen/real names. I keep having to go back and forth so I can see who everyone is. btw, you’re in second place in the contest. I’ll be voting again tomorrow.

I’m excited for you! I really think that you are going to LOVE being free from the dye routine. My children had a hard time with my natural hair color at first, but now they love the “sparkle”. They sure can pick me out in a crowd now!LOL

I loved the ease of having my hair short...I cut mine due to being traumatized by the allergic reaction and also having NO patience for the transition! You have a beautiful head of silver hair! I also love your smile...I bet your friends and family find it contagious! You know what’s under the color, I’m excited for you to see it again! Of course we ALL want to see it too!!

I’m new here and I just viewed your pictures.  You are stunning with your gray!!  Oh my gosh…

I started graying at 15 and I’ve been coloring every since.  I am now 45 and plan to do exactly what you did.  I have long (past my shoulders) brown hair.  My natural color was dark brown when I was very young.  I tried around 40 to do the highlight thing.  I went a few shades lighter and did some caramel highlights.  It looked great for about 4-5 weeks, then the gray began AGAIN..lol I don’t want to keep spending $80 for this process.  I am letting it go.  I’m going to post some photos soon.  (I have naturally curly hair..wonder if they gray will be curly?  I currently use a Chia iron) take care, Wynona

Yzguy, you can bet if your hair is naturally curly, your gray will be also. My naturally curly, very short hair is curlier now than I can ever remember, in my life. But if you have thick hair, it makes cutting and transitioning so much easier. You may actually love your hair short, if you decide to cut it all off, which is exactly what I did. I love it!! Good Morning Yzguy (great name;-)

Our hair kinda has a mind of it’s own...I’m convinced!

When I was younger I had natural curly hair, I even had ringletes when it was humid. My hair really started to change in my late 20’s, but I think it was due to birthing 4 babies in 5 years! My hair actually got thicker and heavier...lost the curls, I think from the increase of more hair.

If you have curly hair now, I think you’ll continue to. It’s one thing that I wish I could have back...I love the beauty and romance of curls, and to have them shimmer with silver!!! How beautiful!

I also DO NOT miss all the “highlights...lowlights”! It was a ball and chain in my life.
At first it was hard dealing with the perception that many have gray = old. When I began graying “cold turkey” I was 36...I wasn’t going down (to old age) without a fight It’s been worth every “bummer” moment and insensitve comment that I received! I feel younger and more alive now than I did in my 20’s!

Enjoy the journey...embrace the transformation...you’ll LOVE the results!

Hi Wzguy - Welcome.  I too have naturally curly hair, which used to be a very dark brown.  I did the “down to the wood” approach.  When the gray started growing out, I noticed that my hair seemed to be curlier.  I hadn’t thought it was possible.  It’s less curly when it’s short than when it gets a little length, but not long enough for the weight to pull some of the curl out.  So I’ve finally got enough hair legth to get the flat iron in it and I’ve been wearing it straight.  This is a very different look for me, and a lot of fun.  I drive with the top down a lot more than I used to.  You know what it’s like with the wind in a head full of natural curls ---- FUZZ!  The good news is, now that it’s not pasted over with all that fake color, it FEELS wonderful.  My hair hasn’t felt soft and touchable in years.  And, since I’m straightening it, it doesn’t require as much product to stay looking nice.  I wash it, dry it, flatten it, and put in a little coconut milk.  It’s shiny, sparkly, has movement and feels awesome.  (P.S. I smell good too.) It’s interesting too that when it’s straight, it looks whiter.  When it’s curly, with all the gel to hold the curls together, it’s more pewter.  I love my hair.  Good luck to you in your journey and welcome to the group.

I’m interested in how you are finding using the straighteners. My hair is naturally curly and I used to straighten it sometimes when it was dyed. When I went back to the wood my hair was obviously too short to straighten but now is probably just long enough. I actually gave away my straighteners just a couple of weeks ago because I was nervous they might scorch my hair and discolour it. Have you noticed any discolouration from the heat?

Hey Sharon—I can chime in on that, too.  NO. Flat ironing does not discolor my hair. I always use a product on it first, like Ojon Shine & Protect Glossing Mist, but there are many other thermal-protective products out there. If you read the blow-dry flat ironing story here, you’ll also find Redken’s Fabricate 03 heat-active texturizer suggested to use before flat ironing.

Now—scorching is another thing. That’s up to you. Keep the flat iron moving along, and never let it remain too long on any one strand. Also, if your flat iron has heat settings, start with the lowest, respecting the fragility of silver hair. It’s kind of like ironing—for real. If you let the iron “sit” on a shirt, you’ll scorch it for sure!

Hi Sharon - I haven’t noticed any scorching, but then again, it isn’t all that long right now.  Some of the others with really long hair probably have more experience with this. 

I use a flat iron with an adjustable heat setting.  I keep it on the lowest possible setting to straighten my hair. I don’t use any thermal product on it.  Just the coconut milk after it’s straight.  I have noticed that I have to change the heat setting depending on whether my hair is freshly washed, (it seems to take a higher setting to get it straight, probably because it’s coarse and takes a long time to get the excess moisture out of it).  On a daily basis, it depends on the humidity level and the amount of curl that’s crept in overnight.  My hair is very dry, so I can’t wash it everyday.  But since it’s curly, I use heat on it everyday.  I probably should look into using some type of thermal protectant, especially since it’s getting some length.

I’ve also used a temporary straightening product that I really loved.  It’s from Haime Munoz and it’s called Easy Straight.  It comes in 1 week, 1 month and 3 month strengths.  I haven’t noticed any damage and, since it’s temporary, it’s good for me.  I wouldn’t want to permanently disturb my curls.  I love my curls.  Just not during the growing out phase.  They are long enough to be complete curls, which makes them spring up closer to my head.  I told my husband that, if I were dressed in a green leotard, I’d look like a dandelion gone to seed.

Hi Dawn~

I have used a number of products that have been suggested by Diana on the site. Ojon, Redken,and Aveda have all been great. I still use coconut oil every other week in my hair, I also put sweet almond oil on my face for a light moisturizer I wipe my hands through my hair afterwards too.

I do not have the same texture of hair as you do...greeneyes and Diana have more of that texture. My hair is pretty easy to deal with and is really fine(but I have a lot of it), I do not use straighteners or a lot of product. Ever since my allergic reaction, my skin and scalp are super sensitive so I have limited options.

As for a suggestion for a good cut....do you have natural wave to your hair too? When I was growing my hair out...my stylist was a GEM!!!! She understood texture and movement and cut my hair accordingly. A good stylist is worth their weight in gold and then some! You might have to shop around, but it"s worth the effort!

You can also put a chat in the “talk on” section about the texture and weight of your hair~ you’ll get great suggestions and advice there too

Oh, I know what you mean about thick hair, Elizabeth. I used to think mine was fat. It was, actually, when it would “plump up” on every humid day. Did it more so when I was bleaching it. That’s because it was so dry, and dying of thirst. That’s why hair frizzes. It tries desperately to drink moisture from the air. It sounds paradoxical, but what you need to do is add more moisture to your hair. Keep it well moisturized, keep it well conditioned. There are lots of products out there that do this.  I particularly like the Ojon and Kerastase lines. That would be my advice for Dawn, too.

Thick and coarse! That’s me! Well, hopefully it’s just my hair! :o)

My hair is much softer and more manageable now that I don’t dye it, but still if I let it air dry (which I usually do,) it gets a bit frizzy on the ends. Blow drying for a short while - when my hair is almost dry - seems to smooth my hair some, though I still don’t like to blow dry often. I feel I have to use the flat iron either way, but it doesn’t take much work really. I straighten only to calm the frizz, not to make my hair poker straight.

Like Diana says, products that condition and moisturize are a must! I’m still trying various products to find a favorite. I just bought Aveda Smooth Infusion. I really love it! It has helped a lot with the frizzies though I honestly think nothing will take them away entirely. I’m also getting ready to try Aveda’s Dry Remedy. I bought the mask and the shampoo. Still haven’t bought Ojon, but plan on getting around to it some day. So many great products to try!

So Dawn, these are my thoughts for hair such as ours. :o)

(Maybe determined is a nicer word.) I think my determination to keep some length outweighs my lack of patience to cut it all off. So, here I am, plugging along and taking my sweet time. :o)

greeneyes...i feel the same way...i wear my hair short enough normally so i figure i will save friends and family and myself the shock value and just let it all hang out!!
it has been 4 weeks since my last cut...she always cuts an inch or so at the minimum...i am liking how my natural hair feels comming in...softer...we shall see how it does as my usual style...i think that is what makes this so fun there is a whole lot to this than just going gray!!

I love your grey hair, you look stunning!  I found this site back in July/Aug when I decided I was going to go grey and I was searching for photos of women with grey hair, I desperately needed to see people with grey hair that didn’t look decades older than they should… I found this site and have kept coming back. I made your story a favourite, and I put your picture on my desktop for a while, it made me relax about the whole thing, and know that I could do it.  Thanks for putting your pics on here and your story too, it really helped!  The whole site did, and everyone is so inspiring!  But I guess that because I wanted to grow my long hair back, and because your photos are so gorgeous, yours was the story I gravitated back to.  I have just read up until now, and not posted, but I found this site so helpful that I have decided to send in a photo too, I love having grey hair now, and would like to help encourage someone else who is choosing to make the transition.  Thanks Elizabeth!

There is a funny story behind the “good morning” photo Elizabeth.  My husband is a real “GEM” especially when it comes to this new adventure of mine.  I had asked him to snap a photo of my roots to send in for Diana to post, which he did ( while rolling his eyes and smirking). I told him that I had no problem with the roots showing!  He then dared me to send in the “test” photo he took before the roots shot.  My comment to him was “no problem, what you see is what I am”.  Now it is posted for ALL to see   I never was one to turn down a dare!  The next photo will be much more “glamorous”

Just beautiful Elizabeth; stunning!  I read your story; so inspirational and what a wonderful transformation.  I’m 38 and just started the journey...needless to say, I have some confusion about the process and much anxiety.  I have been coloring my hair since my early 20’s.  My natural color is brown and I’m starting to see “silver.” Just recently, I cut my hair (short bob) and I have an appointment with my colorist this Saturday - she suggests lightening my hair but I’m afraid of that process—sooooo bad for the hair!  After seeing your beautiful transformation, I’m considering a pixie cut instead.  I’m hoping for salt and pepper and eventually stunning silver.

Good Morning Bobbi,

I wish that there was an “easier” way...for me there was no other option than to just cut it all off. I could not do the lightening process, my face would have ballooned like a heated marshmallow! I didn’t have time to think about going gray and come to peace with it…
If you have a lot of silver peaking through and are not one for patience (I’m sure not;-) I say go for the pixie You get a fresh clean start and instant silver! No more chemicals and immediate results. I had a lot of silver under the color...so it was drastic not just in length but in a totally different color!
If I had to do it over, I would’nt change the “down to the wood” cut

Best of luck with whatever you decide...you have a great support system here! Keep me in the loop as to how it’s going, and I’d love to see pics!

Bobbi, Do not your stylist put anymore color on your hair. When I made the decision to stop coloring, I had my hair cut extremely short and it only took about three cuts to have all the color and years of dyeing my hair to be gone. This is a hard decision but one you will ultimately be very happy with. You may even love your pixie cut. I DO!!! It means I get my hair cut every three to four weeks but it is so worth it. Be strong, you can do it. Debbie

Elizabeth, how long after your last color did you cut “down to the wood” with your hair? I will probably be doing the same thing as I have no patience either!

Good Morning Mary!

I had my last color(oct.2004), came home with my head burning and forming blisters, waited about 1 1/2 weeks until my scalp felt better, took a scissors and started cutting. My husband walked into the bathroom...saw the Dixie cup that I was putting all my cut hair into, and walked out w/o saying a word! He didn’t dare step into that one I left a few wispy pieces to frame my face a little...but the rest was about an inch or so. I still had some color on the tips but it looked really cool. About a month later I went to the stylist (new one), let her shape it a little better in the back, and the rest is what you see now. I get it trimmed every 8-10 weeks and I try not to wash it every day.

I would do it the same way again if I had to do it over. I look forward to seeing pics Mary

Good Morning to you too! I am taking what you said about the last time you colored your hair as a good omen as the last time I colored was just six days ago! So I am starting out the same way that you did just four years ago. I am so excited! Already I have teeny, tiny bits of silver showing through.

I was sharing with some of my coworkers this evening that I will be going gray again due to a dye allergy and do you know that most of them said, “Your gray looked so good on you!” They were also very encouraging. I even showed them the website! Who knows maybe there is someone who has wanted to go gray and will check out the website!

Mornin’ Leeja,

I did continue to get it trimmed and shaped as it grew out. I loved having longer whispy pieces around my face. I used gel every day and shaped my hair with my hands. As it got longer (enough for a very sparse pigtail) I used “rats” to give it a longer updo look. By the way, “rats” are clip on hair pieces, I loved having the freedom of longer looking hair today, short tommorrow. Diana has a link to the hair stuff, I just can’t remember where (Diana...HELP).

I hope that this helps, I LOVE the color of your hair and how it beautifully frames your face! You glow!

The link is http://www.hairextensions.com I’ve actually ordered a pony tail from them. And, although it was artificial hair and TOOOOO shiny, it was fun for a beach day! But they have lots of colors, lots of styles, human hair too. I’m lovin’ the pink extensions!

I think I’m going to have to make an appointment soon to get it shaped.  I’m fighting with my two differnet textures right now, curly on the crown and straight on the sides and back.  Crazy hair.  Thanks so much for the compliment.  I have wanted highlights for years, now I’ve got them, lol.  I can only hope that mine will look half as good as yours when the growout is complete.  Thanks so much for the tips.

Long time...no chat! How are doing with your “hair blues/wobbles”? I had to laugh at your comment of “1/2 way to 90”...you make 45 look FABULOUS!!!! And...I personally love the soft silver shimmer of your hair...it has some mystique to it!

About the updates of pics...I am lucky to have daughters that love to play with a camera. My 12 year old “bllue” took my 40th shot and “lulu” who’s 14 took the hat shot. They can be pretty silly at times! I’m not quit sure who they get it from!!! LOL

I am doing better with my hair blues. I am trying not to think so much about them. :o) Thanks for the compliments… I just wish my hair had a bit more drama. I’m also in an awkward grow out moment, so maybe that is part of my problem, too. I plan to have some pictures taken, hopefully today, and send them in for some opinions. (Okay..now you have me thinking about my hair blues again.) hee hee hee…

I love the nicknames for your daughters. :o) And as for the silliness...don’t you just love when your kids acquire your sense of humor and silliness!? That is one of the saddest things about my kids growing up and not being with me so much...all of the family jokes and quirkiness that no one else understands but them! :o)

It’s just past the middle of my back...I’ve never had long hair so this has been a lot of fun for me. I get it trimmed about every 10 weeks or so. I also just found a new stylist , he’s absolutely wonderful! When you find a stylist you really like and trust, they are worth their weight in GOLD!!!

I must say, you went from attractive to va-VOOM! by going natural.

Even in the photo with the short little pixie cut, your hair color makes your face look stunning!

Hi Elizabeth -

I love my short hair ... but what absolutely stuns me, is my fiance’s reaction. He was dismayed when I told him I was going to cut my long hair. But I met him for dinner after the cut, and he was ALL GRINS! He loves it.

He is 3 years younger than me, and has the most beautiful pewter hair with a renegade patch of white at his forehead that sweeps around to the side. (he wears a military cut, so he looks quite “punk")

I can’t tell for sure what my natural color is going to be, but the 1 inch growth looks similar to greeneyes color.

This is a blast!

I’ll make sure I have pictures taken this weekend of the new cut. I was going to wait to submit photos until I actually had some natural growth to show off. You can only see the silver if I pull a tight part.

But my hair grows fast, so I’m sure it won’t be long!

I agree. The natural colors are just so beautiful. Totally unique and ever-changing! I feel like mine has gotten lighter since it is growing. But I think it’s only because my layers are getting longer and covering up some of the darker hair, since I part on my lighter side. :o)

Hey ladies! Well, I just submitted my photos: long hair, new shorter cut, and if you look REALLY close you can see some silver twinkling in the close up photo of my center part.

My next cut is scheduled for Jan. 3, and I plan on going even shorter. (if I don’t end up chopping it myself in the meantime

I keep checking with my fiance about what he REALLY thinks about this, and he loves the short hair, and thinks he would even like me in a “pixie” cut. This AMAZES me, because he loves long hair on women.

His opinion is important to me ... I want to always look appealing to him ... but I definitely will do what I feel suits me best at the moment ... and I love spontaneous adventure!

P.S.  I love this site and the camaraderie here!

Hey Elizabeth!

I’m so focused on the LET’S HEAR FOR THE NEWBIES page, that I keep forgetting to check other pages for comments

It’s approx. 2 months since my last color, and I don’t THINK I’m going to have to do the pixie after all.  My color is coming in very much like Dara’s ... dark pewter base with every 4th hair a shot of silver, so no real obvious root line. The choppy cut helps. (Actually, I’ve added more “chops” myself on the top ... wanted a more tousled look).

Have you kept your length?

How’s the tattoo looking by now?

I have a large dragon with wings on my upper back on the left, a smaller dragon at the base of my spine, and chinese characters on the inside of both wrists- left wrist: PASSION, right wrist: POWER

Yep...I’ve kept my length. I promised my friend/hairstylist that I would’nt cut it till I was 40...I made it to 40 1/2 and still have only gotten it trimmed. Unfortunately my friend was never able to see it this long...she passed away last year around this time.

The tat is healed now, I’m not quite sure what it looks like now that it has healed...I wish I had eyes on the back of my head(for more than 1 reason;-)I’ll see if my 12 year old daughter can catch a pic of it(she takes most of my pics that I have submitted)It sure did ITCH like the dickens!!!!!!
Why don’t you send in pics of your tats for the “wild gray women” page!!!????? I’d love to see them, along with the rest of the WGW’s

This is all so exciting.  I have to laugh… I thought I was such a daredevil at 54 (then) to stop coloring my hair and here are all these beautiful women so much younger than me turning the knob on the scary door ... opening it up .. and walking through.  I just love you guys. 

RuffDiamond ... my sweet husband complimented me and tried so hard to convince me that my hair was beautiful, but it wasn’t until I met Greeneyes, Dede and Judy and they were so sweet and all the wonderful feedback from this site that I finally felt okay and proud of my hair.

Greeneyes, I have to tell you.  The longer my sister in law grows her hair, the more silvery it is.  I wouldn’t say that she has as much silver as you, but the more it grows the better you can see it and her “color” is almost gone.  It is really pretty. Mine seems lighter or more silvery as it has grown out… does that make sense?  When my hair was short it seemed dark gray.  It’s late for me...I’m probably not making any sense.

And don’t forget. The two guys hanging out of the same car window helped you feel even better about your hair. :o)

I think I get what you mean about hair being more silvery the longer it gets. Since my whites are mostly on the top of my head, the longer my hair gets, the more the whites cover the darks. I think most of us have darker hair on the back of our head. Maybe that is it? At any rate, I’m gonna grow for awhile and see what happens. :o)

Oooh… cool ... you have really nice hair, I bet it will be even prettier long.  I haven’t cut mine ... I’m waiting till this summer to see how long it is and then trim it up.  It doesn’t seem to grow much in the winter.

Sorry it has taken me so long to write you back The Holidays, coaching, singing, and Family life have completely consumed me and my “free” time!
I loved reading your story! You are an extremely gifted woman...I love the expressiveness that you show in your paintings. You are such a natural beauty, it shows in your pictures and your paintings!

I believe that the health and shine that my hair has now is totally because I do not color. I have no regrets in going natural...I truely love the color! It also suits my personality...I like taking the road less traveled and whistling my own tune..my hair fits right in

Thank you for your sweet compliment...ALL of my kids are on school break, sorry it has taken me a few days to write back. I actually homeschooled my 3 oldest for almost 2 years and then put them back in public school a little over a year ago. My oldest is 16 and the youngest is turning 3 soon. There are definately days that fly by soooo fast I’m not sure what hit me!

I did write to Oprah about a year ago when I found this site...I really wanted her to be aware of this amazing Silver Sisterhood and the incredible resources that this site and the women here have to offer...I never heard back. I have no problem writing again though! 

I loved reading your story...you are a beautiful and amazing woman! Glad to see your “true colors shining through”!

Actually, I live in Southeastern Washington State. In a small town outside of Walla Walla, Wa. called Waitsburg! We are a city of about 1500 (a little more since we moved here! Hee, hee). It’s wheat farming country!

Hello Elizabeth.  There is a discussion going on over at “Product Watch” about the “Blue” shampoos today.  A question about a home grown product to brighten grays and get rid of the"yellows" being a possibility came up and I thought of you!  I know you mix up some pretty tantalizing conditioners for your lovely hair and therefore was wondering if you had any ideas on this “yellowing” topic?” By the way, how are you and your family doing??

I have not been commenting as of late but have been “watching” all the updates. You look wonderful! I so love the soft silver curls framing your smile!

Now about the “yellowing”...I have struggled with that the longer my hair grew. I have a great stylist(Justin Paul) that introduced me to the Pureology line. I use the Purify Shampoo and that has helped a lot. I also have the Pureology deep conditioner that I use once a week with a vitamin/white tea leave on spray by Scruples. My hair has been doing much much better. I am extremely happy with the Pureology line, they have zero sulfates. I also use Joico violet shampoo once or twice a week and have not noticed any damaging/drying effects from that. I think Diana had featured the Pureology line when she wrote on Ovarian Cancer awareness...it really is worth trying.

Kids are busy jumping on the trampolines and riding their bikes. I am overwhelmed at times trying to keep up with them!;-) The sunshine was out in full force today! Being the “solar powered” person that I am...it sure feels good!

Elizabeth, I’m so happy you are still watching the posts. You are an amazing inspiration! I so loved your story and that is where I go when I am feeling less then attractive. Seeing you with your glorious hair and your amazing family always makes a difference in my day. I would have loved soooooo...... many children, but nature works differently for all of us. I also would have loved “your” hair, but I am “blessed” with curls. So now curly lulubell is my other hero. I feel so lucky to have come across this website and I feel so much better about this change. I feel confidant, thanks to you and all the other great grays. What a great story you have told everyone--I think everyone who visits this site is extremely thankful for women like yourself who are brave enough to let your silver hair show! You are a beautiful person inside and out and I have to say your natural hair really brings out your gorgeous blue eyes and your beautiful smile.  It has been about 13 months since I’ve colored my hair and I am surprised at how shiny and soft it has become.  I have extremely fine hair and it has thinned considerably so I usually keep it on the short side.  My wonderful husband of 8 years has been so supportive of my decision to do this.  He even runs his fingers through my hair and comments how soft it is!  I have had more positive comments from people since I’ve let my silver hair show.  Like Sheri said on 5/2, Burts Bees Very Volumizing shampoo and conditioner is an excellent product and works well with my hair type.  I would recommend it for anyone with fine or thinning hair!

Elizabeth - I was wondering if you still have long hair - I am trying to keep mine long (it is long for me - down to my shoulders.) Today is not a good hair day.  I have a low thyroid (my meds were increased yesterday) and am on hormorne replacement meds.  My hair is not as thick as I would like for it to be.  I am hoping that with the new meds. my hair might get a little thicker and perhaps not as dry.  We’ll see.

Hi Grayme, I am so sorry to hear about your thyroid issues, I hope that your Dr. is able to get it under control for you ASAP. I have been taking a flaxseed oil lately and have noticed a difference in my hair and my skin...maybe that could help you with the “dry hair” situation. Diana has such a wealth of product info for dry hair too, I hope things get better for you very soon.
Yes...my hair is still long;-) It actually is the longest it as ever been my whole life. I have not been very good these past few months keeping in touch with everyone here on the site...I’ll try to send in a new picture b4 I leave for work this morning;-)

Danielle~ I loved having my “pixie” length hair! I always felt like I had an extra dose of “spunk and sass” when it was short! And boy was it easy! I always left longer pieces around my face to add a little extra pizazz;-) Thank you for the kind comments!

Sorry about your burning reaction to color.  I, too, started experiencing scalp burning and itchiness towards the end of my foray into color. 

Everything happens for a reason. 

Unbelievable!  Your transition is one of great beauty.  Of course you were a beautiful woman to begin with.  But, your gorgeous hair looks smashing at any length and style. 

Your eyes are even more beautiful with your silver hair. 

Very inspirational story.  Perhaps you should be the cover gal!  You’d get my vote. Modeling would be fantastic. There are so many stunning women here who could be part of that industry, too.

Elizabeth~ Fabulous story!  You are beautiful whether your hair is short or long.  You’ve got the face for either style, lucky you.  I’m curious if you can give me the name of the vitamin/white tea leave on spray from Scruples.  I’ve gone to their site and I’m not finding anything like that. They have Embrace luxury hold hair spray.  Maybe I’m confused?

Aahhh, I just found the Scruples White Tea Luxury Collection 5% Panthenol Treatment under “body care”.  It says it can be used for the hair or the skin.  I’m betting that’s what you are talking about?

I just wanted to say I think you hair looks beautiful it is so nice to see people with long gray/white hair. 

I am in my 50s with waist length hair and have been very slowly going white since I was 25.  I have white streaks at the front which are very noticable when my hair is pulled back - “skunk stripe”:-)

Thank you, Thank you!!! I am sitting her and trying to come to terms with being a NEWBY! I am 38 and just 2 months into transition. My hair is “multi-colored” right now...and so has a way to go. You look so amazing! You have given me the strength to continue down this journey. I am excited and scared at the same time!
I am a mom of three you children (7,9 and 10) and they all are asking me why I am going gray??? I am trying to use this as a “life lesson” for all of us!

I just found this website and must admit I am truly inspired to let my gray shine!  I am 37 years old and have been coloring my hair since I was 20.  The thought of letting it “go” never occurred to me until now.  You are absolutely beautiful!  Above all, I admire your courage when others thought against it.

I work in the beauty industry and I know that my decision to stop coloring my hair will be questioned.  I am ready to show my true self and hope that it may too inspire someone else the way you have.

I just found this website this past weekend and thanks to your story and the many others like you, I am more sure than ever not to touch another bottle of color or let my stylists touch my hair with color.  You were a beautiful woman before you went silver, but I believe you are even more beautiful with your natural silver.  My hair has just started to come in gray in about the past 5 years.  It is very dark brown and down to my shoulders, so I don’t know if I will be able to let it transition on it’s own at this length or if I will cut it short.  I have always had long hair, but seeing how you cut yours and how quickly it grew back, gives me hope.

Welcome Jill!  It is refreshing to see those in the hair “biz” deciding to go natural.  I live in Alabama where most women my age (51) still go for the bottle (of hair color.) I am still trying to gain my self confidence and when I do get down on myself I love to come to this site for a pick me up.

I recently came across this site when looking for a new hairstyle.  I have been coloring my hair for at least 30 years....and after seeing these beautiful ladies with this gorgeous gray/silver/white hair, I have decided it is time for me to do the same.  I have gotten so tired of the upkeep of coloring, not to mention that I was never truely happy with the end results.  I am currently 48 years young, have shoulder length hair. It’s been about 6 weeks since my last coloring.  I am hoping to be able to transition without cutting my hair, but not sure I can hold out!  Thanks for sharing your story.  You are truely an inspiration!
The one thing I am not liking is the comments I am getting from some of my co-workers.  Funny how people will “give you their opinion”!

Thank you for the kind comments...it seems like a lifetime ago that I was in the throws of my “silver lining” adventure! I have to admit, that the transitioning experience for me exposed deep personal insecurities that I would have continued to ignore had I not taken this journey. The freeedom, confidence, and inner strength that grew (pun intended;-)from this “hair raising” adventure never ceases to amaze me! And the fun part is...a childhood dream of mine came true...I now have long hair! Long sparkling hair;-) The only thing I am missing is the “twirling skirt” and the “shiney shoes” LOL

I have just discovered this site today - have been thinking about letting my hair go natural for awhile now, but kept having second thoughts. I am now in my fourth month of the grow out.  I don’t regret it a bit, even on days I feel I can’t stand the 2 tone colors.  Most days, I just ignore it and enjoy that I am not strapped to appointments every 4 weeks.
I am about 1 1/2 inches white and am thinking about chopping, but there are some days I look at it and think:  What’s the big deal?

I am so encouraged by Elizabeth’s courage and beauty.
