Hooray for Gray!

The runways were loaded with great gray looks for fall, from apparel to accessories, and every single designer did it “just right” for those of us who are going gray, or already there.

There’s a trick to playing gray, and it has to do with the textural mix. It's true, you've got to get some contrast going, but you can do that with a blending of textures, or with the instant light of metals and shine. Metallics add polish to any look, and you don't have to save them for night, if you combine them in shine-and-matte ways. It's the contrast that counts: think light with dark, matte with shine, soft with slick, and you've got it.

Playing gray all the way, in a single texture, gives a modern, minimal look. And that's when you can add something else -- a light, lifting color, something bright white, or an unusually intriguing accessory. You can take your gray in small doses with a handbag, a toned gray leg, or a terrific shoe, or go the whole way with gray. Here are some looks that play the texture mix perfectly.
