Cold Turkey Club

Here’s your spot! For all you gals who are going cold turkey. Naturally, you could join the Skunk Club, too, but a cold turkey is a unique bird, subject to the most obvious kind of “hair stares,” feelings of doubt, impatience and longing. Join the club! Come here and gobble about it.

The GGLG Book Club
Posted by on Sep 26 at 10:42 AM
Read any good books lately? We’re starting our very own GGLG Book Club just to talk about them. When sending in suggestions, you don’t have to write a whole book report, but tell us a little something about it, and why you like it. You can even share some children’s books, too (great for the grandkids!). Lots of you have responded favorably to this idea, so let’s keep our gray matter on something besides our “gray!”

Longing for Long?
Posted by on Aug 24 at 06:11 PM
You’ve chopped. You’ve pixied. You’ve transitioned. Now what? Many Silver Sisters now want to go long. Chin length, shoulder length, and beyond. This is your place to talk about your next major transition. Good luck, everybody. Did you ever think you’d get out that tapemeasure again?

Skunk Club, Unite!
Posted by on Mar 02 at 04:03 AM
It seems in just one day we have had so many new Members writing in about being in the dreaded Skunk Stage. Agreed, the early stages are the hardest. And the temptation to go back to dye is the strongest. So let’s have a Skunk Club! All of you who have that high-contrast white line, post here. Share your secrets for blending it in. Could be a layered cut, could be a glaze, could be a temporary root cover-up or wash-out rinse. Or just come here to giggle about it. You WILL get through this! And we’ll be right here cheering you on!

International Sisters

"Waaaah mais waaaaah !! c’est trop ça que je veux.” That’s what young gals are saying all over France about white hair! Yasmina just sent the link to a very interesting chat, incredibly called Toxic Store. But the gist of it is how to have white hair. There are even some tips about how to buy coloring kits to get it that way. From what I understand (which is very little!), Japan has them. Interesting to note the ages of the gals—22, 19, 18, 16. Let’s use this discussion as a start-off point for all you internationals. Notice the trend in your country? Here’s the link http://toxicstore.actifforum.com/coiffure-f1/comment-avoir-des-cheveux-blancs-t4750-15.htm

Newbies ‘09
Posted by on Dec 28 at 12:57 PM
Wow! We haven’t rung in the New Year yet, but the Newbies Class ‘09 has gotten off to a great start! Lots of women are making that resolution to “go natural” and Newbies First Semester ‘09 is the perfect place to post your pics to receive encouragement all along the way. You can chat back with all the gals here at this blog. The chat for Newbies ‘08 will still continue, but judging from the length of “Let’s Hear it for the Newbies,” I’ve decided it’s best for each class to have its own place. So this is yours, Class of ‘09, all yours! Which doesn’t mean you can’t chat back and forth with ‘08, and vice versa. One thing I ask, for all of you considering sending in your shots, please read “Three Reasons to Send Us Your Picture” under the Great Grays tab. Then you’ll know the kind of information we’re looking for, and it saves a great deal of back-and-forth. So, welcome all ‘09-ers, and let’s get on with it!

Silence is not Golden
Posted by on Oct 15 at 02:42 PM
It’s not even silver! Have you noticed? Some of our dearest silver sisters are always there for you, offering advice, answering questions, sharing their hair woes and triumphs. Other members choose to remain mum. And that’s fine, if you’re browsing or lurking. But if you’ve joined the silver sisterhood as a Newbie or Gallery Girl, it’s nice to “give back.” To offer encouragement to someone else. To chat in “Let’s Hear it for the Newbies.” Ask a question in “Playing the Waiting Game?” Share your concerns in “Friends & Family.” The more you chat, the more support you’ll get. Because forming a community of great grays who support and help each other is very important to me, I’d like to ask all of you who have submitted pictures recently to join in this vibrant and exciting sisterhood. Because that is truly what this site is all about.

Silver & The City
Posted by on Oct 02 at 09:38 AM
Do ya think Candace Bushnell started this way? Her Sex & The City column in the New York Observer grew into a book, then a series, then a movie, as her alter-ego, Carrie Bradshaw wrote of her own and her friends’ dating dramas. Well, now that we’re silver, we’ve got a few dramas of our own. So here’s the spot to tell all. Oh, and all you marrieds and committeds, chime in too. Let’s talk romance and silver hair.

Gone Gray. . . and Loving It?
Posted by on May 20 at 01:20 PM
Calling all “post-newbies!” Once you’ve finally “arrived” at official silver-dom, do you ever really stop trying new things with your hair? As we all know, gray is always a work in progress, and as our hair changes, we change our thinking about it. Yes, we have good gray days, and bad gray days, just like we did when we were coloring our hair. And, sometimes, we keep waiting for that fab flash of white that never seems to come. So here’s our spot to talk about what we’re thinking of doing with our hair. Or share some wonderful compliments, or talk about the changes our “new” hair color has inspired us to make. And, yes, if you want to vent, that too!

The Best and Worst of Being Gray
Posted by on Dec 12 at 08:00 AM
Ok, every woman who goes gray has those ”moments.” One (very young-looking) woman told me a bus actually lowered the steps for her, mistaking her silvery hair as a sign that she was too feeble to climb aboard. I laughed. Until it happened to me! I laughed, until a young girl offered me her seat on the bus. I laughed until the day the supermarket automatically gave me a “senior discount.” But there are other moments, too. Times when we feel great about gray. Tell us some of your best and worst moments.

Playing the waiting game?
Posted by on Dec 12 at 07:02 AM
Going through “transitioning?” What are your tricks? Your treats? Once you get into it, it’s not much of a process at all. The dead of winter is a perfect time to start, especially if you’re in a climate where you wear hats, scarves, and other hair-hiders. Here’s the strategy: In January, cut your hair short, wear all the hats you want all winter, hibernate if you like, and by spring, your hair will be a bit longer. Get a choppy, modern cut to see you through summer. By June, you will have 6 months of gray grow-in, you won’t be bothered with ends of a different color, and you’ll be able to tell if you like the “new” you. That’s the time to consider if you want to “adjust” it a bit with highlighting, lowlighting, glazing, or any other professional service. But you’ll know what you’re dealing with, and you’ll be well on your way to being a great gray!

What are you afraid of?
Posted by on Dec 06 at 04:03 PM
Our cover girl, Chazz, likes to tell me stories of the women from her gym. As you can imagine, her snow-white hair causes quite a stir. So women are always coming up to her asking how she got that way. What are her tips? Her hair was naturally dark (it had been tons of other shades), but when she made the decision to go “natural,” she had a lot of gray and a lot of dark hair. She did what you can read about in Transitioning. Used a lighter shade on her hair that didn’t touch (or bleach) the natural dark color, but did tint the grays. She said it just looked like she had highlights. As more and more gray came in, she stopped using the lighter color altogether. Chazz thinks most women are really afraid of transitioning. That’s one. There are other “fear factors,” too. Like being afraid you’ll just pale out all over. Being afraid you’ll look older. Being afraid it won’t come in well. I’d like to hear what you’re afraid of. What are your worst fears about going gray? I think this is something we should all talk about.
